Four new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

The comedy Arthur directed by Jason Winer and starring Russell Brand, Helen Mirren, Jennifer Garner and Greta Gerwig features music by Theodore Shapiro. A soundtrack with songs from the movie has been released earlier this week by WaterTower Music. No word on a release of Shapiro’s score. Also coming out this week is the family drama Soul Surfer starring AnnaSophia Robb, Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt. The film’s score is by Marco Beltrami and has been released by Madison Gate Records as reported here. The album can be downloaded on iTunes. ‘Mildred Pierce’ Soundtrack Details

Varese Sarabande Records has announced the details for the soundtrack release of the HBO drama Mildred Pierce. The music for the mini-series is written by Carter Burwell. The album includes Burwell’s original score, as well as number of classical pieces and songs featured in the series. The soundtrack will be released on May 3, 2011. Jim Dooley to Score ‘Poe’

Jim Dooley is writing the music for the TV drama pilot Poe. The show follows Edgar Allan Poe, the world’s very first detective, as he uses unconventional methods to investigate dark mysteries in 1840s Boston. Poe stars Chris Egan in the title role, Natalie Dormer, Kevin McNally and Leslie Odom. The pilot is written by Christopher Hollier (Kyle XY) and directed by Alex Graves (Terra Nova, Fringe). Dan Lin (Sherlock Homes) is producing through his Lin Productions company and Brad Kern (Human Target, Charmed) has been tapped as executive producer and showrunner. ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ Soundtrack Cover Revealed

Walt Disney Records has revealed the cover art for the upcoming soundtrack for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The film’s music is composed by Hans Zimmer and as previously reported, Rodrigo y Garcia are also featured on the soundtrack. The album will be released on May 17, 2011. Theodore Shapiro in Concert and Talking About ‘Arthur’

Theodore Shapiro is currently in Dallas, Texas for three concert performances of his music with the Dallas Symphonic Orchestra this weekend. The concert will include performances of suites from some of Shapiro’s best known scores (The Devil Wears Prada, Marley & Me, Tropic Thunder), as well as the world premiere of a new original concert piece called In Mitn Drinnen. While in Dallas, Shapiro also sat down for an interview with Gordon and the Whale discussing his score to the comedy Arthur, which is coming out this Friday. ‘The Tree of Life’ Soundtrack announced

Lakeshore Records will be releasing the soundtrack album for Terence Malick’s upcoming drama The Tree of Life. Aaron Zigman to Score ‘We the Peeples’

Aaron Zigman has signed on to score the upcoming comedy We the Peeples. The movie is written and directed by Tina Gordon Chism who makes her directing debut on the project. She has previously written the screenplays for Drumline and the 2006 crime drama ATL, which featured a score by Zigman. The comedy starring Craig Robinson, Kerry Washington, Tyler James Williams and David Alan Grier centers on a young man enduring the weekend from hell when he surprises his girlfriend by showing up to meet her parents during the family’s annual end of summer celebration. We the Peeples is produced by Tyler Perry who regularly works with Zigman. The movie marks the composer’s eighth collaboration with Perry. Read the rest of this entry »

John Ottman to Score and Edit ‘Jack the Giant Killer’

John Ottman is set to reunite with director Bryan Singer on the upcoming fantasy adventure Jack the Giant Killer. The film is a twist on the Jack and the Beanstalk story and centers on the kidnapping of a princess that threatens the long-standing peace between men and giants, and a young farmer who’s given an opportunity to lead a dangerous expedition to the giant kingdom to rescue her. The movie stars Nicholas Hoult, Eleanor Tomlinson, Ian McShane, Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Bill Nighy and John Kassir. Writers involved in the project are Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) and Darren Lemke (Shrek Forever After). As on previous collaborations between Ottman and Singer (The Usual Suspects, Apt Pupil, Superman Returns, Valkyrie), Ottman will also be editing the film in addition to writing the music. Heitor Pereira Scoring ‘The Smurfs’

Heitor Pereira has been hired to score the upcoming film adaptation of The Smurfs. The film marks Sony Pictures Animation’s first live-action/animated hyrbid film and stars Neil Patrick Harris, Hank Azaria and Sofia Vergara in the primary live-action roles. The film’s voice talent includes Jonathan Winters, George Lopez, Alan Cummings and Katy Perry. The movie is directed by Raja Gosnell who has previously worked with Pereira on Disney’s 2008 hit family movie Beverly Hills Chihuahua. The Smurfs were created in 1958 by Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford (aka Peyo) and have spawned numerous print and smallscreen incarnations, the most popular one in the United States being the Hanna-Barbera cartoon version.
