Two new movies are opening wide this week:
Opening in most theaters is the Superman reboot Man of Steel directed by Zack Snyder and starring Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Antje Traue, Ayelet Zurer, Christopher Meloni and Russell Crowe. The film’s music is composed by Hans Zimmer. WaterTower Music has released two different soundtrack albums featuring the composer’s music earlier this week. Already in theaters since Wednesday is the apocalyptic comedy This is the End written and directed by Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg and starring James Franco, Jonah Hill, Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Michael Cera and Emma Watson. RCA Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film, including the original track Take Yo Panties Off by Snoop Dogg & Craig Robinson, as well as tracks by Cypress Hill, Whitney Houston, Funkadelic, Backstreet Boys, Norman Greenbaum, J-Kwon, K.Flay and a track from James Franco’s band Daddy. According to the film’s latest poster, Varese Sarabande will release the soundtrack album for the upcoming sci-fi action drama Elysium. The album features the film’s original score composed by Ryan Amon who makes his feature scoring debut on the project and has previously written the music for numerous trailers through his motion picture advertising company, City of the Fallen. Elysium is written and directed by Neil Blomkamp (District 9) and stars Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Wagner Moura, Alice Braga, William Fichtner, Diego Luna and Carly Pope. The film is set on a space station occupied by the very wealthy while the rest of humanity lives on a ravaged, overpopulated Earth. The movie will be released nationwide on August 9 by Sony Pictures.
Jon Brion is currently scoring the upcoming comedy Delivery Man. The film written and directed by Ken Scott is a remake of the director’s French-Canadian 2011 film Starbuck and stars Vince Vaughn, Chris Pratt, Cobie Smulders, Britt Robertson and Jack Reynor. The movie follows a man who is informed that he has fathered 533 children via sperm donations he made twenty years earlier. When a few hundred of the children want to meet their father, he must decide whether or not he will step up and reveal his identity. Andre Rouleau (Goon, An American Haunting) is producing the DreamWorks Pictures production and Scott Mednick, Ray Angelic (Synecdoche, New York) and Mark Sourian are executive producing.
Metropolis Movie Music will release a soundtrack album for the thriller Hummingbird. The album features the film’s original score written by Academy Award-winning composer Dario Marianelli (Atonement, Anna Karenina, Pride and Prejudice). The soundtrack will be released digitally in the UK on June 25, 2013. No word yet on a domestic release date. Hummingbird, which will be released in the US under the title Redemption, is directed by Steven Knight (screenwriter of Eastern Promises) and stars Jason Statham as an Afghanistan veteran haunted by tragic events of the past who assumes the identity of an upper class Londoner. Vicky McClure, Ian Pirie and Agata Buzek are co-starring. Lionsgate/Roadside Attractions will release the film in the US on June 28 in theaters and on VOD. 
WaterTower Music will release the official soundtrack album for the sci-fi monster movie Pacific Rim. The album features the film’s original score composed by Ramin Djawadi (Iron Man, Game of Thrones). Former Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello and singer Priscilla Ahn are features as soloists on the score. The soundtrack will be released on July 9, 2013. Check back on this page for the cover art and audio clips. Pacific Rim is directed by Guillermo del Toro and stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi and Ron Perlman. The film is set in the future where soldiers piloting giant robots battle against giant monsters who have mysteriously risen five miles beneath the ocean.
Nickelodeon and Sony Music Entertainment’s Legacy Recordings will release a soundtrack album for the hit Nickelodeon animated series The Legend of Korra. The album features selections from the show’s original music composed by Jeremy Zuckerman of The Track Team (Avatar: The Last Airbender). The soundtrack will be released both digitally and physically on July 16, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on
Chan Kwong Wing is scoring the upcoming martial arts action drama Man of Tai Chi. The Chinese-American co-production marks the directorial debut of Keanu Reeves who also stars in the film alongside Iko Uwais, Tiger Chen and Karen Mok. The movie is set in modern day Beijing and follows the spiritual journey of a young martial artist whose skills places him in position to experience opportunities and sacrifices. Michael G. Cooney wrote the screenplay and Lemore Syvan (Sherrybaby, Henry’s Crime) is producing the Village Roadshow Pictures Asia, China Film Group and Wanda Media Group. Chan Kwong Wing’s previous film scoring credits include such titles as Internal Affairs, The Warlords, The Last Tycoon and
Paul Cantelon has composed the score for the period drama Effie Gray. The film is directed by Richard Laxton (An Englishman in New York) and stars Dakota Fanning, Emma Thompson, Greg Wise, Tom Sturridge, Julie Walters, Robbie Coltrane and Derek Jacobi. The movie centers on the unfortunate marriage between Euphemia Gray and the famed critic John Ruskin in 1840’s London. Thompson stars as Lady Eastlake, an art critic and historian who was also one of Gray’s friends. Thompson also wrote the screenplay and Don Rosenfeld & Andreas Roald (Voyage of Time) are producing the project for Sovereign Films. Effie Gray is expected to premiere later this year.
Kuskus will release a soundtrack album for the French thriller La marque des anges – Miserere. The album features the film’s original score composed by Max Richter (Waltz with Bashir, Disconnect). Also included is a track from tomandandy’s score from Killing Zoe, as well as other music from the film. The soundtrack will be released digitally on June 24, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on
