Tim Hecker is composing the music for the upcoming indie drama The Free World. The film is written and directed by Jason Lew (screenwriter of Gus Van Sant’s Restless) and stars Boyd Holbrook, Elisabeth Moss, Octavia Spencer, Sung Kang and Waleed Zuaiter. The movie follows a man truggling to adapt to life on the outside following his release from a brutal stretch in prison for crimes he didn’t commit and meets a mysterious woman with a violent past. Julian Wass to Score HBO’s ‘Animals’

Julian Wass has signed on to score the upcoming HBO original series Animals. The show is created by Phil Matarese and Mike Luciano and revolves around a group of downtrodden creatures – pigeons, rats, bedbugs, etc. – living in New York City. The animated comedy features the voices of Matarese and Luciano, as well as actors including Katie Aselton, Nick Kroll and Rob Corddry. The creators are also executive producing the project with Jay & Mark Duplass (Cyrus, Jeff, Who Lives at Home, Togetherness). ‘A Christmas Horror Story’ Soundtrack Released

Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album for the horror movie A Christmas Horror Story. The album features the film’s original music composed by Alex Khaskin (Replicant). The soundtrack is now available to download on iTunes, where you can also listen to audio samples. A Christmas Horror Story is directed by Grant Harvey, Steven Hoban & Brett Sullivan and stars William Shatner, George Buza, Ken Hall, Debra Lynne McCabe, Joe Silvaggio, Zoe de Grand’Maison, Shannon Kook, Alex Ozerov, Jeff Clarke and Amy Forsyth. Jerry Goldsmith’s Complete ‘Total Recall’ Score Released

Quartet Records has released a new soundtrack album for the 1990 sci-fi action thriller Total Recall directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sharon Stone. The album features the film’s original original score composed and conducted by Jerry Goldsmith (Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Alien, Planet of the Apes, The Omen) who later collaborated with the director two more times on Basic Instinct and Hollow Man. The 2-CD set release, which coincides with the 25th anniversary of the movie, features the composer’s complete score on the first disc (including previously unreleased music), and the content of the 1990 soundtrack album, as well as alternates and source cues on the second disc. The only movie opening nationwide this weekend is the adventure drama In the Heart of the Sea directed by Ron Howard and starring Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy, Tom Holland, Jordi Mollá, Ben Whishaw and Brendan Gleeson. The film’s original music is composed by Roque Banos (The Machinist, Evil Dead, Regression, Oldboy). WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music last week. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album for Jared Hess’ comedy Don Verdean. The album the original songs from the film performed by the Heavy Young Heathens, as well as Leslie Bibb’s performance of Pillar of Salt. Also included are selections from the film’s original music composed by Ilan Eshkeri (Stardust, Still Alice, Layer Cake, Shaun the Sheep). The movie follows the title character who treats what would have been his bachelor party as an opportunity to reconnect with his friends. Academy Announces 74 Original Songs in Oscar Race

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has announced the short list of 74 songs that are in contention for nominations in the Original Song category for the 88th Academy Awards. During the nominations process, all voting members of the Music Branch will receive a Reminder List of works submitted in the category and a DVD copy of the song clips. Members will be asked to watch the clips and then vote in the order of their preference for not more than five achievements in the category.
