wsaThe World Soundtrack Academy has announced the first wave of nominees for the 2016 World Soundtrack Awards in the categories Film Composer of the Year, Best TV Composer and Best Original Song Written Directly for a Film. The winners will be announced at the World Soundtrack Awards & concert on Wednesday, October 19, the closing night of the Ghent International Film Festival. Here are the nominations:

Lady Gaga to Compose & Perform Songs for Bradley Cooper’s ‘A Star is Born’

lady-gagaAccording to Deadline, Lady Gaga will be composing and performing music for the upcoming remake of the movie musical A Star Is Born. The film will mark the directorial feature debut of Bradley Cooper who will also star in the movie alongside Gaga who will be playing the lead role and portray a singer whose star rises as quickly as her troubled lover/mentor’s star is falling. Cooper is also writing the screenplay with Will Fetters (Remember Me, The Lucky One) and is producing the project with Todd Phillips (The Hangover, Old School), Billy Gerber (Villa Capri) and Jon Peters (Batman, Superman Returns, Ali). The Warner Bros. Pictures production is set to start shooting in early 2017.

Lorne Balfe to Score Jonathan Teplitzky’s ‘Churchill’

churchillLorne Balfe has signed on to compose the music for the upcoming biographical drama Churchill. The film is directed by Jonathan Teplitzky (The Railway Man, Burning Man) and stars Brian Cox, Miranda Richardson, John Slattery, James Purefoy and Ella Purnell. The movie is set across the five days before D-Day in 1944 and charts the tension between the British PM and the Allied leaders, including Eisenhower and Montgomery, who are poised to launch the invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. Expanded ‘Primal Fear’ Soundtrack to Be Released

primal-fearLa-La Land Records has announced a new soundtrack release for the 1996 thriller Primal Fear directed by Gregory Hoblit and starring Richard Gere, Edward Norton and Laura Linney. The album features the expanded and remastered original music from the film composed and produced by James Newton Howard (King Kong, The Hunger Games, The Sixth Sense, Signs, Maleficent, The Fugitive), including more than 30 minutes of previously unreleased cues, alternates and demos. the-little-mermaidDeadline is reporting that Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda will be teaming up to write the music for a live action feature adaptation of The Little Mermaid. The movie version is also said to feature songs from Disney’s classic animated movie, for which Menken won two Academy Awards for Best Original Song (with Howard Ashman) and Best Original Score. Marc Platt (Into the Woods, Wanted, Legally Blonde, Bridge of Spies) who is also on board of Disney’s upcoming Mary Poppins Returns will be producing the project. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe, Kirsten Dunst, Jim Parsons, Mahershala Ali, Aldis Hodge, Glen Powell and Kevin Costner. The movie tells the true story of a group of brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit.
