Yu Kobayashi has composed the original music for the upcoming Chinese fantasy action adventure sequel The Monkey King 3. The film is directed by Soi Cheang who also helmed the first two parts in the series and stars Aaron Kwok, William Feng, Zanilia Zhao, Xiaoshenyang and Him Law. The movie follows the Monkey King and his companions as they are taken captive by the Queen of an all-female land, who believes them to be part of an ancient prophecy heralding the fall of her kingdom. Max Richter has been hired to score the upcoming historical drama Mary, Queen of Scots. The film is marks the directorial debut of Josie Rourke, artistic director of The Donmar Warehouse, and stars Saoirse Ronan in the title role, alongside Margot Robbie as Elizabeth I. David Tennant, Guy Pearce, Jack Lowden, Martin  Compston, Joe Alwyn and Brendan Coyle are co-starring. Walt Disney Records will release the official soundtrack album for Disney’s fantasy drama A Wrinkle in Time. The album features the film’s original music composed by Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones, Westworld, Pacific Rim, Iron Man, Clash of the Titans). The soundtrack will be released physically on March 23, 2018 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. A digital version is expected to be released a few weeks earlier. This week, Rolfe Kent will be recording his score for the upcoming biographical drama Stan & Ollie. The film is directed by Jon S. Baird (Filth) and stars Steve Coogan as Stan Laurel and John C. Reilly as Oliver Hardy. Shirley Henderson and Danny Huston are co-starring. The movie focuses on the now-legendary 1953 tour which the the ageing comedy duo embarked on in the twilight years of their fame. Jeff Pope (Philomena, Mrs. Biggs) wrote the screenplay. The album features the film’s original music composed by Steven Argila (The Paul Reiser Show, Theres…Johnny!, Monster High, Max Steel). The soundtrack will be released digitally on February 9, 2018. Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare in Love, Billy Elliott, Quills, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin) is set to score the upcoming British drama Mrs. Lowry and Son. The film is directed by Adrian Noble (The Importance of Being Earnest, A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and stars Timothy Spall and Vanessa Redgrave. The movie examines the relationship between early 20th century British painter L.S. Lowry and his mother, Elizabeth. John Morris (1926-2018)

John Morris has passed away this past Thursday, January 25, at age 91 at his home in Red Hook, New York. The composer is best known for collaborations on numerous films directed by Mel Brooks, including Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Spaceballs, The Producers, Life Stinks and Silent Movie. He received two Academy Award nominations for the original title song from Blazing Saddles in 1976 and for his score to David Lynch’s 1980 feature The Elephant Man, for which he was also Grammy Award-nominated. Morris’ other film scoring credits include Arthur Hiller’s 1979 comedy The In-Laws, 1983’s Yellowbeard, 1984’s The Woman in Red starring Gene Wilder, 1985’s Clue, the 1987 classic Dirty Dancing starring Patrick Swayze and 1990’s Stella starring Bette Midler. Premiering in the U.S. on Tuesday, January 30, is the German television series Babylon Berlin co-created and -directed by Tom Tykwer and starring Volker Bruch, Liv Lisa Fries, Matthias Brandt, Hannah Herzsprung, Karl Markovics, Lars Eidinger and Sebastian Urzen. Tykwer also co-scored the show with Johnny Klimek (Run Lola Run, The International, Cloud Atlas, Sense8). BMG has released a soundtrack album featuring the score, as well as tracks by The Bryan Ferry Orchestra, Moka Efti Orchestra & more last fall when the drama premiered overseas. Premiering on Wednesday, January 31, is the YouTube Red original series Step Up: High Water created by Holly Sorensen and starring Ne-Yo, Naya Rivera, Lauryn McClain, Petrice Jones, Faizon Love and Marcus Mitchell. Lionsgate Records will release a soundtrack album featuring the original songs from the show by Jason “Poo Bear” Boyd and “Jingle” Jared Gutstadt on the same day.
