David Holmes and Keefus Ciancia have taken over scoring duties on Oliver Hirschbiegel’s biographical drama Diana. The movie stars Naomi Watts in the title role of Princess Diana and follows her the last two years of her life and the secret love affair she had shortly before her tragic death. Naveen Andrews is co-starring as Dr. Hasnat Khan, alongside Douglas Hodge, Geraldine James, Charles Edwards and Juliet Stevenson are co-starring. Stephen Jeffreys (The Libertine) wrote the screenplay and Robert Bernstein & Douglas Rae (Becoming Jane, The Water Horse, Nowhere Boy) are producing the project. Holmes is best known for his numerous collaborations with Steven Soderbergh, including the Ocean’s trilogy, Out of Sight and last year’s Haywire. Ciancia who is also known as Keefus Green has collaborated with T Bone Burnett on a number of projects and has most recently co-scored the first season of ABC’s Nashville.

Abel Korzeniowski Scoring Carlo Carlei’s ‘Romeo & Juliet’
Abel Korzeniowski has recently composed a new score for the new film adaptation of Romeo & Juliet. The composer recorded his music on the Eastwood Scoring Stage in Los Angeles, CA at the end of last month with a full orchestra and choir. James Horner previously recorded a score for the film at the end of last year at Abbey Road Studios in London. Romeo & Juliet based on Shakepeare’s play is directed by Carlo Carlei and adapted for the screen by Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park). The film stars Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld in the title roles. The movie’s cast also includes Damian Lewis, Natascha McElhone, Lesley Manville, Ed Westwick, Paul Giamatti, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Stellan Skarsgard. The movie will be released in the UK on July 26. Realtivity Media has picked up domestic rights for the movie for a release on October 11, 2013.
‘Machete Kills’ to Feature Music by Carl Thiel
Carl Thiel has composed the score for the upcoming action sequel Machete Kills. The film is written and directed by Robert Rodriguez and stars Danny Trejo in the title role of ex-Federale agent Machete who is recruited by the President of the United States to take down a madman revolutionary and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war and anarchy across the planet. Michelle Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, Charlie Sheen, Lady Gaga, Antonio Banderas, Jessica Alba, Demián Bichir and Mel Gibson are co-starring in the Troublemaker Studios production. Kyle Ward has written the screenplay based on a story by Robert & Marcel Rodriguez. Thiel previously scored Rodriguez’s Shorts and Spy Kids: All the Time in the World 4D and the Planet Terror segment from Grindhouse.
Dickon Hinchliffe to Score Steven Knight’s ‘Locke’
Dickon Hinchliffe has been tapped to score the upcoming real-time thriller Locke. The film is written and directed by Steven Knight (screenwriter of Eastern Promises and Dirty Pretty Things) and stars Tom Hardy in the title role as Ivan Locke who has the perfect family and a dream job, but a phone call forces him to make a decision that will put it all on the line. Olivia Colman, Ruth Wilson, Tom Holland and Andrew Scott are co-starring. Paul Webster (Atonement, Pride and Prejudice) is producing the IM Global production with Guy Heeley for Shoebox Films. Joe Wright is executive producing. Knight previously collaborated with composer Dario Marianelli on his feature directorial debut Redemption starring Jason Statham.
Rodrigo Leão Scoring Lee Daniels’ ‘The Butler’
Rodrigo Leão has taken over scoring duties on the upcoming drama The Butler. The film is directed by Lee Daniels (Precious, The Paperboy) and stars Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey, John Cusack, Jane Fonda, Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence Howard, Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz, James Marsden, David Oyelowo, Vanessa Redgrave, Alan Rickman, Liev Schreiber and Robin Williams. The movie tells the story of Eugene Allen, a White House employee who served eight First Families over the course of three decades. Danny Strong (Recount) has written the screenplay. Daniels is producing the project with Laura Ziskin (Spider-Man, What About Bob?), Pamela Oas Williams, Cassian Elwes and Buddy Patrick (Ain’t Them Bodies Saint, The Paperboy).
Mark Mothersbaugh Scoring ‘Last Vegas’
Mark Mothersbaugh has been tapped to score the upcoming comedy Last Vegas. The film is directed by Jon Turteltaub and stars Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline as four best friends in their late-60’s, who decide to escape retirement and throw a Las Vegas bachelor party for the last single member of their group. Mary Steenburgen, Jerry Ferrara, Romany Malco and Roger Bart are co-starring. Dan Fogelman (Crazy, Stupid, Love, Cars, Bolt) wrote the screenplay and Laurence Mark (Jerry Maguire, I, Robot, Dreamgirls) and Amy Baer are producing the project.
George Fenton Scoring Terry Gilliam’s ‘The Zero Theorem’
George Fenton is currently scoring the upcoming sci-fi drama The Zero Theorem. The film is directed by Terry Gilliam and stars Christoph Waltz, David Thewlis, Tilda Swinton, Ben Whishaw, Matt Damon, Lucas Hedges, Peter Stormare and Melanie Thierry. The movie follows an eccentric computer genius plagued with existential angst as he works on a mysterious project aimed at discovering the purpose of existence. Pat Rushin wrote the screenplay and Dean Zanuck (Road to Perdition, Get Low) is producing the Mediapro Studios production with Nicolas Chartier (The Hurt Locker, Killer Joe, The Company You Keep) of Voltage Pictures. Fenton has previously scored Gilliam’s 1991 drama The Fisher King.
Trevor Rabin to Score ‘Grudge Match’
Warner Bros. Pictures has announced that Trevor Rabin is composing the music for the upcoming sports comedy Grudge Match. The film is directed by Peter Segal (Anger Management, The Longest Yard) and stars Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone as two local Pittsburgh fighters and old boxing rivals who come out of retirement for one final match. Kevin Hart, Alan Arkin, Kim Basinger, Jon Bernthal and Camden Gray are co-starring. Rodney Rothman has written the screenplay based on a story by Tim Kelleher (First Kid). Bill Gerber (Gran Torino, The Dukes of Hazzard), Mark Steven Johnson (Ghost Rider, Daredevil), Michael Ewing (Get Smart) and Ravi Mehta are producing the project for Gerber Pictures Production and Callahan Filmworks Production.
David Torn to Score ‘Are We Officially Dating?’
David Torn has signed on to score the upcoming romantic comedy Are We Officially Dating?. The film is written and directed by Tom Gormican and stars Zac Efron, Michael B. Jordan, Miles Teller, Imogen Poots, Jessica Lucas and Josh Pais. The movie follows three guys who decide to support a friend devastated by a recent breakup by vowing to maintain their single status for as long as possible. Justin Nappi and Kevin Turen (Arbitrage, All Is Lost) are producing the project for Treehouse Pictures, along with Scott Aversano (Failure to Launch, Killers) and Andrew O’Connor (Peep Show). Torn’s previous film scoring credits as a composer include such titles as Lars and the Real Girl, The Wackness, Everything Must Go and Friday Night Lights.
‘Words of Gods’ to Feature Music by Peter Gabriel
Peter Gabriel is scoring the upcoming religion-themed movie Words of Gods. The film features nine shorts from renowned international directors, including Serbia’s Emir Kusturica (Underground), Japan’s Hideo Nakata (Dark Water), Iran’s Bahman Ghobadi (Turtles Can Fly), India’s Mira Nair (Vanity Fair) and Mexico’s Guillermo Arriaga (The Burning Plain). Arriaga is also producing the project with Alex Garcia. Nobel Prize-winning author Mario Vargas Llosa serves as a creative consultant. Peter Gabriel has previously scored such films as Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ and Phillip Noyce’s Rabbit-Proof Fence.
