Three new movies are opening in theaters nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the animated feature UglyDolls directed by Kelly Asbury and starring Kelly Clarkson, Nick Jonas, Blake Shelton, Janelle Monae, Wanda Sykes, Emma Roberts, Gabriel Iglesias, Wang Leehom and Pitbull. The film’s original score is composed by Christopher Lennertz (Lost in Space, Horrible Bosses, Sausage Party) who also co-wrote most of the film’s original songs with Glenn Slater (Tangled, Galavant). Also opening wide is the romantic comedy Long Shot directed by Jonathan Levine and starring Seth Rogen, Charlize Theron, Andy Serkis, June Diane Raphael, Ravi Patel, Bob Odenkirk and Alexander Skarsgård. Marco Beltrami (Logan, A Quiet Place, Scream, World War Z, 3:10 to Yuma) & Miles Hankins (The Night Before, Len and Company) have composed the film’s original score. Also opening nationwide is the thriller The Intruder directed by Deon Taylor and starring Michael Ealy, Meagan Good, Joseph Sikora and Dennis Quaid. The film’s original music is composed by Geoff Zanelli (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Christopher Robin, Disturbia, Into the West). Opening semi-wide in around 600 theaters is the crime thriller El Chicano directed by Ben Hernandez Bray and starring Raúl Castillo, Aimee Garcia, Jose Pablo Cantillo, David Castañeda, Marco Rodríguez, Sal Lopez, Marlene Forte, Kate del Castillo and George Lopez. Opening in limited release is the biographical drama Bolden directed by Dan Pritzker and starring Gary Carr, Erik LaRay Harvey, Yaya DaCosta, Ian McShane and Michael Rooker. The film’s original score is composed by Mark Isham (Once Upon a Time, Crash, The Black Dahlia, 42, Miracle) & Scott Steiner. A score album is in the works. Also opening in limited release is the documentary Ask Dr. Ruth directed by Ryan White about the life of Dr. Ruth Westheimer, a Holocaust survivor who became America’s most famous sex therapist. Blake Neely (Arrow, Supergirl, The Flash, Riverdale, The Pacific, Everwood) has composed the film’s original music. No word yet on a soundtrack release. The documentary premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is being released in select theaters by Magnolia Pictures before premiering on Hulu later this year. Also opening in select cities is the romantic drama Tell It to the Bees directed by Annabel Jankel and starring Anna Paquin, Holliday Grainger, Emun Elliott, Steven Robertson, Lauren Lyle, Gregor Selkirk and Kate Dickie. The film’s original music is composed by Claire M Singer. Globe has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score today. Also opening in select theaters is the action epic Shadow co-written and directed by Zhang Yimou and starring Deng Chao, Sun Li, Zheng Kai, Wang Qianyuan, Wang Jingchun, Hu Jun, Guan Xiaotong and Leo Wu. Lao Zai (Mountain Patrol, Police Story: Lockdown, Railroad Tigers) has composed the film’s original music. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score last fall when the movie opened overseas. Opening in select theaters and also premiering on Netflix today is the thriller Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile directed by Joe Berlinger and starring Zac Efron as Ted Bundy, alongside Lily Collins, Haley Joel Osment, Kaya Scodelario, John Malkovich and Jim Parsons. Marco Beltrami (The Wolverine, The Hurt Locker) & Dennis Smith (Lucifer, Roswell, New Mexico) have composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced. The thriller premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is now available to stream on Netflix.
Opening in select theaters while also premiering on HBO today is the documentary At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal directed by Erin Lee Carr. The film’s original music composed by Drum & Lace (The First Monday in May, The Gospel According to Andre) and Ian Hultquist (Assassination Nation, Animals, A.X.L.).
