Three new movies are opening nationwide and this weekend:
The comic book adaptation Thor directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba, Ray Stevenson, Kat Dennings, Rene Russo and Stellan Skarsgaard is expected to top the weekend box office. Patrick Doyle has composed the score for the film and a soundtrack has been released on Buena Vista Records. Check out our announcement for details on the album and audio clips. Also opening wide is the comedy Jumping the Broom directed by Salim Akil and starring Angela Bassett, Paula Patton, Laz Alonso, Loretta Devine, Mike Epps and Julie Bowen. Edward Shearmur composed the film’s score and a soundtrack with both score and songs from the film has been released earlier this week by Madison Gate Records. The final wide release of this week is the romantic comedy Something Borrowed directed by Luke Greenfield and starring Kate Hudson, Ginnifer Goodwin, John Krasinski and Colin Egglesfield. The film’s score is by composer Alex Wurman (visit our article on the scoring assignment). UPDATE (May 9, 2011): A soundtrack album with songs from the movie has been released by WaterTower Music. Opening in limited release is Jodie Foster’s drama The Beaver starring Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, Anton Yelchin and Jennifer Lawrence. Marcelo Zarvos has composed the score for the film. Also opening in limited release is Roland Joffe’s There Be Dragons starring Charlie Cox, Wes Bentley and Olga Kurylenko. The film’s music is written by Stephen Warbeck. A lengthy suite from the score can be found here. No official soundtrack announcement has been made yet, but given the quality of the suite and the interest in the music from the film’s previous international openings, a release might be forthcoming. Massy Tadjedin’s drama Last Night starring Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington and Eva Mendes is also opening in select cities. The film features a score by Clint Mansell. The composer has announced on Twitter that there are plans to release the score. Check out a track from the soundtrack by Mansell and Peter Broderick on YouTube. Receiving a limited theatrical release before being released on DVD and Blu-Ray on May 31 is the thriller Passion Play directed by Mitch Glazer and starring Mickey Rourke, Megan Fox and Bill Murray. The film’s score is composed by Dickon Hinchliffe (Winter’s Bone, Last Chance Harvey). No soundtrack is available for the movie. Visit Image Entertainment’s film website to watch the trailer.
Opening in New York is the drama An Invisible Sign directed by Marilyn Agrelo and starring Jessica Alba, Chris Messina, John Shea and J.K. Simmons. The movie’s score is written by Andrew Hollander (Waitress). There’s no official soundtrack release, but a track from the score can be listened to on the composer’s website. Finally, also opening in limited release is the drama Daydream Romance directed by Michael Goldbach and starring Kat Dennings, Reece Thompson, Andie MacDowell and Josh Lucas. The film’s score is by Ohad Benchetrit. A soundtrack with both songs and score from the film is reportedly coming, but isn’t available anywhere yet.
