Mychael Danna Wins Oscar for ‘Life of Pi’

Mychael Danna has won his first Academy Award in the Best Original Score category for his music for Ang Lee’s Life of Pi. The composer was also nominated for the first time. The other contenders in the category were John Williams (Lincoln), Alexandre Desplat (Argo), Dario Marianelli (Anna Karenina) and Thomas Newman (Skyfall). All five nominated composers were in attendance at the awards ceremony.

In the Best Original Song category, Adele Adkins and Paul Epworth received the award for the title song of the James Bond film Skyfall.

Thomas Newman Wins BAFTA for ‘Skyfall’

baftaThomas Newman has received his second BAFTA for his score for the latest James Bond film Skyfall directed by Sam Mendes and starring Daniel Craig in the Original Music category. Newman accepted the award in person at the awards ceremony at the Royal Opera House in London. He was nominated alongside Dario Marianelli (Anna Karenina), Alexandre Desplat (Argo), Mychael Danna (Life of Pi) and John Williams (Lincoln). The composer has previously received the award for his music for American Beauty in 2000, his first collaboration with Mendes. Newman is also up for an Academy Award for his Skyfall score.

Adele to Perform ‘Skyfall’ at Oscars

skyfallThe Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has announced today that Adele will perform the Oscar-nominated title song from the latest James Bond movie Skyfall at the 85th Academy Awards ceremony. The song, written by Adele and Paul Epworth, is the first Bond theme ever to debut in Billboard’s Top 10 and the first to be nominated for an Oscar since For Your Eyes Only in 1981. Adele’s exclusive Oscar show performance will be the first time she will have performed Skyfall anywhere live and will also mark her first television performance in the US since the Grammys last year. Skyfall is nominated in the Best Original Song category, along with songs from Life of Pi, Les Miserables, Chasing Ice and Ted. Oscars for outstanding film achievements of 2012 will be presented on Sunday, February 24, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center.

US-GOLDEN GLOBES-TROPHYNBC has published the interviews from the press room of the 70th Golden Globe Awards. As previously reported, composer Mychael Danna was honored with the award for his music for Ang Lee’s 3D adventure movie Life of Pi. Following his acceptance speech (which can be checked out here), the composer answered questions to members of the international press backstage at the awards show. Mychael Danna has received his first Golden Globe Award for his score for Ang Lee’s Life of Pi. The composer has also just received an Academy Award nomination for both score and the song Pi’s Lullaby earlier this week. Check out Danna’s acceptance speech after the jump. John Williams Wins Critics’ Choice Movie Award for ‘Lincoln’

John Williams was honored with the Critics’ Choice Movie Award in the Best Score category for his music for Steven Spielberg’s historical drama Lincoln at tonight’s 18th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards ceremony in Los Angeles. The other composers nominated in the Best Score category were Alexandre Desplat (Argo, Moonrise Kingdom), Mychael Danna (Life of Pi) and Jonny Greenwood (The Master). Williams is also nominated for a Golden Globe, a BAFTA Award and has just received his 49th Academy Award nomination earlier today. The composer’s soundtrack for Lincoln is available on Sony Classical.

Only one movie is opening wide this weekend:

Opening nationwide today after an IMAX pre-release yesterday is the 23rd James Bond movie Skyfall directed by Sam Mendes and starring Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Judi Dench, Naomie Harris, Albert Finney, Ralph Fiennes and Ben Whishaw. The film’s title song is performed by Adele and is available to download here. Thomas Newman has composed the movie’s score. Sony Classical has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. For audio clips and the full album details, check out our previous article. Opening in limited release is the biographical drama Lincoln directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Hal Holbrook, John Hawkes, David Strathairn, James Spader, Tim Blake Nelson, Jeremy Strong, Bruce McGill and Joseph Crosmarks. The film’s music is composed by John Williams. Sony Classical has released a soundtrack album featuring Williams’ score. ‘Skyfall’ Recording Sessions

Sony Pictures Belgium has published a short video from the recording sessions of the score for the latest James Bond film Skyfall. The video features footage of the film’s composer Thomas Newman conducting the orchestra at Abbey Road Studios in London, as well as the composer talking about his first score for the Bond series. As previously reported, the soundtrack will released overseas on October 29, 2012 and in the US on November 6 by Sony Classical and is now available for pre-order on Amazon.

Film Music Reporter has received the track list of the soundtrack album for Skyfall. The album for the 23rd James Bond movie features the film’s original music composed by Thomas Newman.
