Mychael Danna Wins Oscar for ‘Life of Pi’

Mychael Danna has won his first Academy Award in the Best Original Score category for his music for Ang Lee’s Life of Pi. The composer was also nominated for the first time. The other contenders in the category were John Williams (Lincoln), Alexandre Desplat (Argo), Dario Marianelli (Anna Karenina) and Thomas Newman (Skyfall). All five nominated composers were in attendance at the awards ceremony.

In the Best Original Song category, Adele Adkins and Paul Epworth received the award for the title song of the James Bond film Skyfall.

Adele to Perform ‘Skyfall’ at Oscars

skyfallThe Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has announced today that Adele will perform the Oscar-nominated title song from the latest James Bond movie Skyfall at the 85th Academy Awards ceremony. The song, written by Adele and Paul Epworth, is the first Bond theme ever to debut in Billboard’s Top 10 and the first to be nominated for an Oscar since For Your Eyes Only in 1981. Adele’s exclusive Oscar show performance will be the first time she will have performed Skyfall anywhere live and will also mark her first television performance in the US since the Grammys last year. Skyfall is nominated in the Best Original Song category, along with songs from Life of Pi, Les Miserables, Chasing Ice and Ted. Oscars for outstanding film achievements of 2012 will be presented on Sunday, February 24, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center.

US-GOLDEN GLOBES-TROPHYNBC has published the interviews from the press room of the 70th Golden Globe Awards. As previously reported, composer Mychael Danna was honored with the award for his music for Ang Lee’s 3D adventure movie Life of Pi. Following his acceptance speech (which can be checked out here), the composer answered questions to members of the international press backstage at the awards show. Danna talked about his work on the film, his collaboration with Ang Lee, his musical influences and his relationship with India. Check out the full video after the jump.

John Williams Wins Critics’ Choice Movie Award for ‘Lincoln’

John Williams was honored with the Critics’ Choice Movie Award in the Best Score category for his music for Steven Spielberg’s historical drama Lincoln at tonight’s 18th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards ceremony in Los Angeles. The other composers nominated in the Best Score category were Alexandre Desplat (Argo, Moonrise Kingdom), Mychael Danna (Life of Pi) and Jonny Greenwood (The Master). Williams is also nominated for a Golden Globe, a BAFTA Award and has just received his 49th Academy Award nomination earlier today. The composer’s soundtrack for Lincoln is available on Sony Classical.

Adele Confirmed for ‘Skyfall’ Theme Song

Adele confirmed today that she has co-written and performed the theme song for the latest James Bond film Skyfall. The song is written by the English singer/songwriter and Paul Hepworth (Rolling in the Deep) and was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London. Hepworth is also credited as the arranger with J.A.C. Redford on the sheet music of the song that Adele posted on Twitter this morning (see image attached after the jump). Redford is best known as a composer for films and TV shows including St. Elsewhere and as an orchestrator for such composers as James Horner and Skyfall‘s composer Thomas Newman. The song will be available on Adele’s official site on Friday. The single is also available for pre-order on iTunes. More information about the soundtrack album featuring Newman’s score are expected to be published soon.
