Mychael Danna has received his first Golden Globe Award for his score for Ang Lee’s Life of Pi. The composer has also just received an Academy Award nomination for both score and the song Pi’s Lullaby earlier this week. Check out Danna’s acceptance speech after the jump. Awards Contenders in Conversation
A number of lengthy video interviews with some of the composers who are considered major contenders this awards season have recently been published. David Poland from Movie City News has conducted interviews with three composers, including Mychael Danna who scored Ang Lee’s Life of Pi, Alexandre Deplat who has a number of titles in the race (Argo, Zero Dark Thirty and Rise of the Guardians), as well as Thomas Newman who is joined by director John Madden of The Best Exotic Marigold and also has his music for Skyfall in contention. Palm Springs Festival to Honor Mychael Danna
Mychael Danna will be honored with the Frederick Loewe Music Award at the 24th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival. The composer will be receiving the award for his work on Ang Lee’s Life of Pi, for which he already received a Golden Globe, as well as a Broadcast Film Critics Association Movie Award nomination. Danna composed the score and has also co-written the original song Pi’s Lullaby for the film. Past recipients of the Frederick Loewe Award for Film Composing include Alexandre Desplat, Danny Elfman, Howard Shore and Randy Newman. Danna will be be recognized at a gala on January 5, 2012 at the Palm Springs Convention Center along with other honorees Richard Gere, Bradley Cooper, Helen Mirren, Sally Field, Helen Hunt, Naomi Watts, Robert Zemeckis, Tom Hooper and the cast of Argo.

Three new movies opened wide this past Wednesday:
Opening in most theaters this holiday weekend is Dreamworks Animation’s Rise of the Guardians directed by Peter Ramsey and featuring the voice talent of Chris Pine, Alec Baldwin, Hugh Jackman, Isla Fisher and Jude Law. The film’s music is composed by Alexandre Desplat. Varese Sarabande Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the original song Still Dream performed by Renée Fleming and composed by Desplat. Mychael Danna to Score Atom Egoyan’s ‘The Devil’s Knot’
Mychael Danna is reuniting with director Atom Egoyan to score the upcoming drama The Devil’s Knot. The movie is based on Mara Leveritt’s bestselling book West Memphis Three and stars Colin Firth, Reese Witherspoon, Dane DeHaan, Amy Ryan, Mireille Enos, Kevin Durand, Bruce Greenwood, Alessandro Nivola, Stephen Moyer, Collette Wolfe, Kris Polaha and Kristopher Higgins. The movie tells the true story of three teens who were wrongly convicted of murdering three boys in 1993. Scott Derrickson & Paul Harris Boardman (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) have written the screenplay and Boardman is also producing the Worldview Entertainment production with Elizabeth Fowler, Clark Peterson (Monster, Rampart), Richard Saperstein and Christopher Woodrow (James Gray’s upcoming Nightingale). Danna and Egoyan have been collaborating for over 20 years on such films as The Sweet Hereafter, Exotica, Where the Truth Lies, Ararat and Chloe.

The soundtrack will be released on November 19, 2012 by Sony Classical and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Audio clips can be checked out below. Sony Classical to Release Soundtracks for ‘Skyfall’ and ‘Life of Pi’
Sony Classical is set to release two of this year’s most anticipated soundtracks, including the album for the latest James Bond film Skyfall. The release features the film’s music composed by Thomas Newman. The soundtrack is set to be released overseas on October 22, 2012 and is expected to come out in the US around the same time. Skyfall directed by Sam Mendes and starring Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Judi Dench, Naomie Harris, Berenice Marlohe, Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney and Ben Whishaw marks Newman’s first film in the Bond series. The 23rd Bond movie will be released in the US on November 9 after opening in Europe at the end of October.
Mychael Danna Scoring ‘World Without End’
Mychael Danna has composed the score for the upcoming epic mini-series World Without End. The series based on Ken Follett’s best-selling novel is directed by Michael Caton-Jones and stars Cynthia Nixon, Ben Chaplin, Peter Firth, Charlotte Riley, Rupert Evans, Nora von Waldstaetten, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Tom Weston-Jones, Megan Follows and Sarah Gadon. The eight-hour thriller is the follow up to the 2010 mini-series The Pillars of the Earth (scored by Trevor Morris) and is set over 150 years after the Pillars events during the start of the Hundred Years’ War and the outbreak of the Black Death.
Rolfe Kent Receives BMI’s Richard Kirk Award
This past Wednesday, Rolfe Kent has received the Richard Kirk Award at the BMI Film and TV Awards at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills. The award is bestowed on composers who have made significant contributions to the realm of film and television music.
