Watertower Music will be releasing the official soundtrack album for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. The album includes the original score from the movie by Hans Zimmer. Lorne Balfe who was involved as a soundtrack producer on the first film in 2009 is again co-producing the music with Zimmer. Also included on the album are three tracks from recordings of Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Schubert’s Die Forelle and Ennio Morricone’s score for Two Mules for Sister Sara. The soundtrack will be released on December 13, 2011 and is available for pre-order on Amazon. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows stars Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams,Stephen Fry, Jared Harris and Noomi Rapace.

‘World Soundtrack Awards’ Winners Announced
The World Soundtrack Academy announced the winners of the World Soundtrack Awards 2011 at last night’s closing event of the 38th Ghent International Film Festival. Alexandre Desplat was chosen as Film Composer of the Year 2011. Hans Zimmer received the award for Best Orginal Film Score of the Year for Inception and Randy Newman was awarded for his song We Belong Together from Toy Story 3 in the Best Original Song Written for Film category. Alex Heffes received the Discovery of the Year Award for The First Grader & The Rite. The Public Choice Award went to A.R. Rahman for the film 127 hours. Among the composers in attendance at the event were Giorgio Moroder who was the recipient of the World Soundtrack Lifetime Achievement Award, as well as Gabriel Yared, Hans Zimmer, Elliot Goldenthal, Alexandre Desplat, Alex Heffes and Abel Korzeniowski.
Hans Zimmer to Sit Out the 2012 Oscar Race
According to an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hans Zimmer said at the Ghent Film Festival, where he was attendance for a performance of some of his scores at last night’s World Soundtrack Awards ceremony, that he will be sitting out this year’s Academy Awards competition. The composer mentioned that his decision is partly related to the death of his longtime publicist Ronni Chasen, to whom the concert was dedicated, but he also mentioned his desire to just focus on his upcoming work (which includes the highly anticipated The Dark Knight Rises). Zimmer has written music for five movies released this year, including Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Kung Fu Panda 2 (co-composed with John Powell), The Dilemma (co-composed with Lorne Balfe), Rango and the upcoming Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, with especially the latter two having been considered serious contenders for the awards race.
Hans Zimmer to Collaborate with Dave Stewart, Ann Marie Calhoun and Sheila E. on ‘Madagascar 3’
Hans Zimmer has teamed up with Dave Stewart, Ann Marie Coulhan and Sheila E. on Dreamworks Animation’s upcoming Madagascar 3. The artists have recently recorded music for the animated sequel in London. Eurythmics founder Dave Stewart has previously worked on a number of movies as a score composer and songwriter, including Robert Altman’s Cookie’s Fortune and the remake of Alfie, on which he worked together with Mick Jagger. Ann Marie Coulhain is an acclaimed violinist who recently collaborated with Stewart on recordings for the rock group SuperHeavy, which also includes film composer A.R. Rahman, Mick Jagger, Joss Stone and Damian Marley. Sheila E. is a drummer and percussionist, best known for her work with Prince, George Duke and Ringo Starr.
‘Thelma & Louise’ Score by Hans Zimmer Released
Kritzerland has announced the world premiere release of the complete score for Ridley Scott’s 1991 classic Thelma & Louise. The music is written by Hans Zimmer on his second collaboration with the director following Black Rain. The soundtrack is limited to only 1200 copies and is available to order on Kritzerland’s website where you can also listen to audio clips from the album. Only one four-minute track of Zimmer’s score featuring Peye Haycock’s guitar work has previously been released on the offcial 1991 soundtrack album. Thelma & Louise stars Susan Sarandon, Geena Davis, Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, Christopher Macdonald and Brad Pitt. The movie has received six Academy Award nominations and ended up winning one Oscar for Callie Khouri’s screenplay.

Four new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the action thriller Drive directed by Nicolas Winding Refn and starring Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Christina Hendricks, Albert Brooks, Bryan Cranston, Ron Perlman and Oscar Isaacs. The film’s score is written by Cliff Martinez. A soundtrack featuring the composer’s score, as well as several songs from the movie has been released on Lakeshore Records. The movie’s score is composed by Lurie’s regular musical collaborator Larry Groupé. Madison Gate has released a soundtrack featuring Groupé’s score. Two new movies are opening wide this Memorial Day weekend:
Dreamworks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 2 directed by Jennifer Yuh and featuring the voice talent of Jack Black Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, Gary Oldman, David Cross, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Lucy Liu, Michelle Yeoh, Dennis Haysbert, Victor Garber and Dustin Hoffman is opening in almost 4000 theaters. The film’s music is by Hans Zimmer and John Powell. A score album has been released by Varese Sarabande. For details and audio clips, visit our previous article. The film’s score is by Christophe Beck. No score album has been announced, but a soundtrack including the songs featured in the movie has been released by Watertower Music. Hans Zimmer and Rodrigo y Gabriela on ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’
Spinner Music has recently uploaded a new short video interview with Hans Zimmer and Rodrigo y Gabriela focusing on the contributions of the Mexican musical duo to score for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The site has also published a music video of the track The Pirate That Should Not Be from the film’s soundtrack, in which the musicians can be seen performing the rhythmic guitar parts of the track. In related news, Rodrigo y Gabriela have revealed in a recent interview with Vanity Fair that they will be working on another film that a composer of Zimmer’s Remote Control Productions is scoring. The duo will be collaborating with Henry Jackman on the upcoming Dreamworks Animation picture Puss in Boots.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides directed by Rob Marshall and starring Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush and Penelope Cruzis is the fourth entry in the adventure series. The film’s music is composed by Hans Zimmer featuring Rodrigo y Gabriela. A soundtrack album including selections from the score, as well as number of remixes has been released on Tuesday by Walt Disney Records. Opening in limited release today is Woody Allen’s comedy Midnight in Paris starring Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates, Adrien Brody, Carla Bruni, Marion Cottilard and Michael Sheen. As most movies by the director, the film doesn’t have an original score, but features several songs. No soundtrack album has been announced yet for the movie, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last week.
Hans Zimmer Joins WME Talent Agency
As reported by Variety and Deadline last week, the talent agency WME has signed composer Hans Zimmer, who was previously with the Gorfaine-Schwartz agency. WME has only recently started getting into representing film composers by hiring Amos Newman, the son of Academy Award-winning composer and songwriter Randy Newman. Deadline reported last month that he will be leading a newly formed film, TV, game, online and mobile division of the agency’s music department. The new unit will work to integrate WME music clients, including Kanye West, Lady Gaga, The Chemical Brothers, and Nine Inch Nails into film, television, gaming, online, and mobile platforms. Newman himself has been working for the Gorfaine-Schwartz agency for the last couple of years, where he oversaw the career of Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman. According to Variety, composers David Holmes, David Newman and Alan Elliott are also among WME’s other recent signees.
