The line-up of the 2nd Annual Superhero Music Panel has been announced. Six leading Hollywood composers will discuss the process of creating the musical voice behind the superhero, explain the challenges when bringing a comic book character or story to life and writing music to reflect the story line. The panelists will also show film clips of their work. Participating composers include Brian Tyler who scored Marvel’s two features in 2013, Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World and is set to score the biggest movie of his career to date, Avengers: Age of Ultron, John Ottman who most recently composed the music and edited X-Men: Days of Future Past and has previously worked on X2 and the two The Fantastic Four features, as well as Tyler Bates who has Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy coming up and whose previous credits include 300 and Watchmen.

Comic-Con 2013 Update
Since our last update on this year’s film music-related events at Comic-Con in San Diego, a couple of additional announcements have been made. Bear McCreary (Battlestar Galactica, The Walking Dead) has joined the panel The Anatomy of Superhero Film Music: Bringing a Comic Book to Life, which also features such participants as Marco Beltrami and Brian Tyler. It was just announced that the composer will be scoring Marvel’s upcoming superhero TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. earlier this week. As previously reported, McCreary will also participate in The Character of Music panel with Jonathan Steinberg from the upcoming Black Sails series. In addition, there will also be a live performance of the original Black Sails score with McCreary playing accordion and hurdy gurdy at a screening event on July 18 at 8:30 p.m. at Reading Cinemas (701 5th Ave). Finally, the composer will also participate in a panel for the sci-fi feature Europa Report with director Sebastián Cordero, producer Ben Browning, actress Karolina Wydra and JPL scientists Steve Vance and Kevin Hand.

The line-up for two film music-related panels at Comic-Con 2013 has been announced. On Thursday, July 18, a number of film directors and composers will participate in the panel The Anatomy of Superhero Film Music: Bringing a Comic Book to Life. Composer Marco Beltrami and director James Mangold (The Wolverine), composer Brian Tyler and director Shane Black (Iron Man 3), composer Matthew Margeson and director Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2), composer Christopher Lennertz (Marvel: Agent Carter) and music supervisor Dave Jordan (The Avengers) will discuss the challenges faced when bringing a comic book character to life and giving that character a voice, working with directors and how they collaborate to convey the story of the character.
‘The Character of Music’ Panel at Comic-Con Announced
The line-up for this year’s The Character of Music panel at Comic-Con in San Diego has been announced. A number of composer and executive producer teams will discuss the dynamics of music in film and television. Panelists include Bear McCreary and Jonathan Steinberg (Black Sails), Brian Reitzell and Bryan Fuller (Hannibal), and Dino Meneghin and Jeff Davis (Teen Wolf). The participants will discuss their working relationship, how music plays a character in their stories and the intense process of scoring their projects. The panel will be moderated by BMI’s director of film and TV relations Anne Cecere and Chandler Poling of White Bear PR. The event will take place on Friday, July 19 at 3:00pm in Room 32AB. ‘Perfect Sound for TV & Film’ Composer Panel at Comic-Con
The line-up of the Comic-Con panel Behind the Music with CW3PR: Perfect Sound for TV & Film has been announced. The event will highlight singer and composer collaborations essential to creating poignant and memorable music in TV and film. Panelists will discuss how these dynamic partnerships work and how a singer’s voice can amplify an original score. Panelists include composers Robert Duncan (Castle, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the upcoming Last Resort), Trevor Morris (Immortals, The Borgias, The Tudors) and Danny Jacob (Disney’s Phineas and Ferb, the Lilo and Stitch TV series), as well as singers Lisbeth Scott (True Blood, Avatar, Iron Man 2) and Laura Dickinson (Phineas and Ferb, Universal Pictures’ upcoming Pitch Perfect). More surprise panelists will be announced next week.
‘The Character of Music’ Panel at Comic-Con 2012
A number of film composers will be taking part at this year’s The Character of Music panel at Comic-Con. Among the participants are Blake Neely and Mark Guggenheim, executive producer and show-runner of the upcoming CW show Arrow. Neely has already recorded music for the pilot a few months ago with a 80-piece orchestra at Warner Bros. Eastwood Scoring Stage. Also taking part in the panel is Christopher Lennertz who has already written music for the pilot of the NBC drama Revolution created by Eric Kripke and produced by J.J. Abrams and is also using a live orchestra for the score to the series. The panelists also include composer Joseph Trapanese and executive producer Charlie Bean who will be talking about their work on the animated series Tron: Uprising.
