The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has announced today Jennifer Hudson will be performing the original song I’ll Fight from the documentary RBG at this year’s Academy Awards ceremony. The song, which is written by Diane Warren, is nominated this year in the Original Song category, along with Shallow from A Star Is Born, Where Lost Things Go from Mary Poppins Returns, All the Stars from Black Panther and When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings from The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.

Academy Announces Shortlists for Best Original Score & Songs
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced the shortlists for several categories for the 91st Academy Awards, including Best Original Score and Best Original Song. The nominations will be announced on January 22, 2019 and the awards show will be held on February 24.
‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’, ‘Mandy’ & ‘The Other Side of the Wind’ Scores Ruled Ineligible for Academy Awards
Variety is reporting that in addition to Green Book, three more scores have been ruled ineligible by the Academy’s music branch. Among ineligible titles are Solo: A Star Wars Story (composed by John Powell with themes by John Williams), which was reportedly submitted too late, Mandy (composed by Johann Johannsson), which violated the rule of its qualifying theatrical release (as the movie was released on VOD simultaneously), and The Other Side of the Wind (composed by Michel Legrand), which didn’t meet the same rule that Green Book was disqualified for.
‘Green Book’ Score Ruled Ineligible for Academy Awards
THR is reporting that the music branch of the Academy Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has ruled the original score for Peter Farrelly’s comedy drama Green Book ineligible in the Best Original Score category for next year’s Academy Awards. The Academy is citing its rule that states that a score “shall not be eligible if it has been diluted by the use of pre-existing music, or it has been diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs or any music not composed specifically for the film by the submitting composer”. Kris Bowers (Dear White People, For the People) has composed the score for the film, which features several musical performances by the The Don Shirley Trio (led by Mahershala Ali who portrays pianist Shirley in the movie), as well some period songs.

Lalo Schifrin Honored at Governors Awards
Yesterday, Lalo Schifrin was honored with an Honorary Academy Award at the 10th Governors Awards at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland Center. The composer whose scoring credits include Mission: Impossible, The Cincinnati Kid, Enter the Dragon, Cool Hand Luke, Bullit, The Amityville Horror and Rush Hour was introduced by actress Kathy Bates (who starred in Schifrin-scored The Bridge of San Rey) and Clint Eastwood who collaborated with Schifrin on eight movies including Dirty Harry, Sudden Impact and The Deal Pool. Lalo Schifrin to Receive Honorary Academy Award at 2018 Governors Awards
The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted Tuesday night (September 4) to present an Honorary Award to composer Lalo Schifrin. He will be honored at the Academy’s 10th Annual Governors Awards on Sunday, November 18, at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland Center. Born and raised in Argentina, Schifrin studied classical music and jazz in France before beginning to compose for film in Buenos Aires in the mid-1950s. He has written scores for more than 100 films, including The Cincinnati Kid, Dirty Harry, Enter the Dragon and Rush Hour.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited 928 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures to join the organization. Academy Announces Rule Change in Music Categories
The Academy’s Board of Governors has approved Oscars rules and campaign regulations for the 91st Academy Awards, including a change in the music categories, where “all members of the Music Branch will view films eligible for Original Score and film clips of eligible Original Songs and vote in a preliminary round to produce a shortlist of 15 titles in each category using the preferential voting system. Five nominees for Original Score and five nominees for Original Song will then be chosen by branch members in a second round of balloting also using preferential voting.”
