Alexandre Desplat was honored with his second Academy Award for his score for Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water at tonight’s 90th Oscar ceremony. The other nominated composers in the Best Original Score category were Jonny Greenwood (Phantom Thread), Hans Zimmer (Dunkirk), John Williams (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) and Carter Burwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri). Performers of Academy Award-Nominated Songs Announced
The performers of this year’s nominated songs at the 90th Oscars ceremony have been announced today by show producers Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd. Gael Garcia Bernal, Natalie LaFourcade and Miguel will perform Remember Me from Pixar’s Coco written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez & Robert Lopez. Bernal provided the voice of the main character in the film and Miguel & LaFourcade recorded the end credits version of the song. Mary J. Blige will perform Might River from Dee Rees’ Mudbound, which she co-wrote with Raphael Saadiq and Taura Stinson.
Harold Wheeler to Return as Music Director for Oscars
Academy Awards producers Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd today announced that Harold Wheeler was selected as music director for this year’s 90th Oscars. He returns for his fifth Oscar telecast, his third as music director following the ceremonies in 2016 & 2017. Wheeler is best known as an orchestrator, composer, conductor, arranger and record producer and has received numerous Emmy and Tony Award nominations. His television credits include the People’s Choice Awards, 17 season’s of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars and AFI’s 100 Years… series.
Details for 2018’s Oscar Concert Announced
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and The Los Angeles Philharmonic today announced details of The Oscar Concert, a special, one-night-only celebration of film music at Walt Disney Concert Hall on Wednesday, February 28, 2018, at 8:00 p.m. As part of the Oscar week celebrations for its 90th anniversary, the Academy, in partnership with the LA Phil, presents an exclusive one-of-a-kind celebration of film music, including never-before-heard arrangements of this year’s five Original Score Oscar nominees. Curated by composers and Academy Governors Michael Giacchino, Laura Karpman, and Charles Bernstein, the evening offers an insider’s look at film scoring across the decades, with select scores performed live by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, led by conductor Thomas Wilkins, and special guest Terence Blanchard (trumpet), with additional special guests to be announced.

Academy Announces 141 Scores in Oscar Race
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 141 scores from eligible feature-length motion pictures released in 2017 are in contention for nominations in the Original Score category for the 90th Academy Awards. The nominations will be announced on January 23, 2018.
Academy Announces 70 Original Songs in Oscar Race
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has announced the short list of 70 songs that are in contention for nominations in the Original Song category for the 90th Academy Awards. During the nominations process, all voting members of the Music Branch will receive a Reminder List of works submitted in the category and a compilation of the song clips. Members will be asked to watch the clips and then vote in the order of their preference for not more than five achievements in the category. The five achievements receiving the highest number of votes will become the nominations for final voting for the award. A maximum of two songs may be nominated from any one film. The nominations will be announced on January 23, 2018.

Academy Announces New Awards Rules
The Academy of Motion Pictures announced a couple of new rules and campaign regulations for next year’s 90th Academy Awards, which were approved at their most recent Board meeting on Tuesday, March 28, including one in the music categories. The new rules state that, “in the Music (Original Score) category, in the case of a score that has three or more equally contributing composers, the composers may be considered as a group.
Academy to Team with LA Philharmonic for Oscar Concert 2018
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is teaming with the Los Angeles Philharmonic to present next year’s nominated scores live in concert. The event is set to take place on February 28, 2018 at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Downtown Los Angeles. Conductor Thomas Wilkins will lead the celebration and the program will include suites and video from each nominated film. The Academy presented its first Oscar concert back in 2014 at UCLA’s Royce Hall. The nominations for the 90th Academy Awards will be announced on January 23, 2018 and the ceremony will be held on Oscar Sunday, March 4 at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood.
