Academy Awards Original Song Short List Announced

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has announced the short list of 39 songs that are in contention for nominations in the Original Song category for the 84th Academy Awards. On January 5, 2012, the Academy will screen clips featuring each song for voting members of the Music Branch in Los Angeles. Following the screenings, members will determine the nominees by an averaged point system of voting. A maximum of two songs may be nominated from any one film and the nominations will be announced on January 24.

Here are songs in alphabetical order of the films:

“The World I Knew” from African Cats
“Lay Your Head Down” from Albert Nobbs
“Star Spangled Man” from Captain America: The First Avenger
“Collision of Worlds” from Cars 2

Hans Zimmer and Pharrell Williams to Serve as Music Consultants at the 2012 Academy Awards

Deadline is reporting that Hans Zimmer and Pharrell Williams have been set to supervise the music for the 84th Academy Awards ceremony next February. They will be serving as music consultants, which will be the first time both of them are involved in the production of the awards show. Brian Grazer and Don Mischer are producing next year’s ceremony. Grazer has worked Zimmer on several movies, including Frost/Nixon, The DaVinci Code and Angels & Demons. Zimmer has announced a few months ago that he will be sitting out as a contender at this year’s Oscar race despite having a number of qualifying movies, including Rango and the upcoming Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Zimmer has been nominated for nine Academy Awards and has received the award once in 1995 for The Lion King. Williams has co-scored last year’s animation hit Despicable Me, which marked his film scoring debut. The 84th Academy Awards will be airing on February 26, 2012 on ABC.

Hans Zimmer to Sit Out the 2012 Oscar Race

According to an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hans Zimmer said at the Ghent Film Festival, where he was attendance for a performance of some of his scores at last night’s World Soundtrack Awards ceremony, that he will be sitting out this year’s Academy Awards competition. The composer mentioned that his decision is partly related to the death of his longtime publicist Ronni Chasen, to whom the concert was dedicated, but he also mentioned his desire to just focus on his upcoming work (which includes the highly anticipated The Dark Knight Rises). Zimmer has written music for five movies released this year, including Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Kung Fu Panda 2 (co-composed with John Powell), The Dilemma (co-composed with Lorne Balfe), Rango and the upcoming Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, with especially the latter two having been considered serious contenders for the awards race.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross win Oscar for ‘The Social Network’

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have won the Oscar for their original score for David Fincher’s The Social Network. The award marks the first Oscar win for both composers, who both have been nominated for the first time. The score beat out Alexandre Desplat’s The King’s Speech, Hans Zimmer’s Incpetion, John Powell’s How to Train Your Dragon and A.R. Rahman’s 127 Hours.

In the Best Song category, Randy Newman won the Oscar for his original song We Belong Together from Toy Story 3.

All nominated composers were spotted in attendance at the Academy Award ceremony.

William Ross to conduct this year’s Oscar ceremony

According to The Hollywood Reporter, William Ross will be conducting the 83rd Academy Awards this Sunday. He previously conducted the 79th Oscars back in 2007. Ross is most well known as a conductor and orchestrator for such composers as Alan Silvestri and John Powell. Ross has also written numerous feature scores, including The Tale of Desperaux, Ladder 49, Tin Cup and My Dog Skip. Check out our previous article on Ross’ upcoming projects.

Oscar-eligible scores announced

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences’ music branch has sent out a list of all 77 Oscar-eligible scores for 2011’s Academy Awards ceremony. As previously reported, a number of scores has been ruled ineligible (Black Swan, The Fighter, True Grit, The Kids Are All Right) by the music branch and Randy Newman hasn’t submitted his score for Toy Story 3. The list also doesn’t include Alan Menken’s score for Tangled, which apparently also hasn’t been submitted, while a song from the movie written by Alan Menken is among the frontrunners for getting a song nomination. As Variety notes, James Newton Howard has four scores in contention (The Last Airbender, Love and Other Drugs, Salt, The Tourist), while Alexandre Desplat (The King’s Speech, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow: Part 1, The Ghost Writer) and David Arnold (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Made in Dagenham, Morning Glory) have three scores each on the list.
