THR is reporting that the music branch of the Academy Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has ruled the original score for Peter Farrelly’s comedy drama Green Book ineligible in the Best Original Score category for next year’s Academy Awards. The Academy is citing its rule that states that a score “shall not be eligible if it has been diluted by the use of pre-existing music, or it has been diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs or any music not composed specifically for the film by the submitting composer”. Kris Bowers (Dear White People, For the People) has composed the score for the film, which features several musical performances by the The Don Shirley Trio (led by Mahershala Ali who portrays pianist Shirley in the movie), as well some period songs.

Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the fantasy adventure Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald directed by David Yates and starring Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Jude Law, Johnny Depp, Zoë Kravitz and Callum Turner. The film’s original music is composed by James Newton Howard (The Hunger Games, King Kong, Maleficent, The Sixth Sense). Also opening wide is the crime thriller Widows directed by Steve McQueen and starring Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki, Cynthia Erivo, Colin Farrell, Brian Tyree Henry, Daniel Kaluuya, Garret Dillahunt, Carrie Coon, Jacki Weaver, Robert Duvall and Liam Neeson. Hans Zimmer (Gladiator, Inception, The Dark Knight, The Lion King, Dunkirk) has composed the film’s original score. ‘Green Book’ Soundtrack Released
Milan Records has released a soundtrack album for the comedy drama Green Book. The album features the film’s original music composed by Kris Bowers (Dear White People, For the People, Of Monsters and Men). Also included are the songs from the movie by The Blue Jays, Timmy Shaw, The Blackwells, Jack’s Four, Bob Kelly & others, as well as the performances of The Don Shirley Trio as featured in the film. The soundtrack is now available to download on Amazon, where you can also check out audio samples. A CD version is set to come out on December 7 and is available to order here and a vinyl version is also in the works. Green Book is co-written and directed by Peter Farrelly and stars Viggo Mortensen, Mahershala Ali, Linda Cardellini, Sebastian Maniscalco, Dimiter D. Marinov and P.J. Byrne.
Kris Bowers Scoring Peter Farrelly’s ‘Green Book’
Kris Bowers is scoring the upcoming drama Green Book. The film is directed by Peter Farrelly (There’s Something About Mary, Dumb and Dumber, Me, Myself & Irene) and stars Viggo Mortensen, Mahershala Ali and Linda Cardellini. The movie is set in 1962 and tells the true story of the growing friendship between Tony Lip, a nightclub bouncer who’s been hired to chauffeur the highly-educated African-American piano-playing prodigy Dr. Don Shirley through the Deep South on a concert tour.
