Elia Cmiral is currently scoring the thriller Rites of Passage. The film marks the feature directorial debut of screenwriter W. Peter Iliff (Point Break, Patriot Games, Varsity Blues) and stars Christian Slater, Wes Bentley, Kate Maberley, Ryan Donowho and Stephen Dorff. The movie centers around an anthropology bookworm who laments his place in a society that lacks a ceremony to mark his transition into manhood and leads his hard-partying, stressed-out classmates to his family’s abandoned ranch — where his brother lives in a psychotic world of drugs, guilt and Chumash Indian rituals. Ilan Eshkeri Scoring ‘Retreat’

Ilan Eshkeri has recently recorded his score for the British thriller Retreat. The film is directed by Carl Tibbetts and stars Jamie Bell, Cillian Murphy and Thandie Newton. The movie centers on a married couple who rent a cottage on a remote island to fix their marriage. Their plans are cut short when a soldier wearing a biohazard suit washes up on the beach claiming that everyone on the mainland has been killed by a virus. Eshkeri’s score features violin solos by Jack Liebeck who recently performed on Dario Marianelli’s score for Jane Eyre. Composer Michael Brook who is coming off his arguably most successful year, having scored the Oscar-winning drama The Fighter has a number of movies coming up this year. Opening this spring is the thriller Wrecked. The film stars Adrien Brody and marks the feature directing debut of Michael Greenspan. In the movie, a man wakes up from a car wreck at the bottom of a cliff, having no memory of who he is or how he got there, leaving him forced to discover his true identity. The film is now available on Video on Demand and opens in theaters on April 1 in New York and April 8 in Los Angeles. Theodore Shapiro has been hired to score the upcoming comedy The Change-Up. The film tells the story of a married guy who accidentally changes bodies with his single best friend and ends up pursuing a female coworker. The movie stars Ryan Reynolds, Jason Bateman, Leslie Mann, Alan Arkin and Olivia Wilde. The film is written by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore (The Hangover) and directed by David Dobkin. Dobkin previously worked together with composers Randy Edelman (Shanghai Knights), Rolfe Kent (The Wedding Crashers) and Christophe Beck (Fred Claus) on his previous movies. Michael Giacchino will be providing the music for Walt Disney Animation Studio’s short The Ballad of Nessie. Disney’s press release describes the short as “a whimsical and colorful tall tale about the friendly Loch Ness monster, Nessie, and how she and her best friend MacQuack the rubber duck came to live in the moor they now call home”. Scottish comedian Billy Connolly is narrating the film, which is animated in the classic Disney hand-drawn style. The short movie is directed by Stevie Wermers-Skelton and Kevin Deters who previously worked with Giacchino on 2009’s Emmy-winning animated short Prep Landing. Giacchino also has previously scored numerous shorts for Pixar, including the Academy Award-nominated films Day & Night, Partly Cloudy, Lifted and One Man Band. Read the rest of this entry »

Relativity Music Group has announced a soundtrack album for the thriller Limitless. The soundtrack includes Paul Leonard-Morgan’s original score from the film directed by Neil Burger. Danny Elfman has signed on to compose music for the ride Mystic Manor at Disneyland Hong Kong. The attraction is a new version based on the classic Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland in California and is due to make its debut in early 2013. Film Music Reporter has learned that James Newton Howard is currently working on the score for the upcoming drama Darling Companion. The film is directed by Newton Howard’s long time collaborator Lawrence Kasdan. They have previously worked together on such movies as Grand Canyon, Wyatt Earp, French Kiss, Mumford and Dreamcatcher. The project marks Kasdan’s first directorial effort in over eight years. The film centers around a woman who loves her dog more than her husband, and the drama that ensues after he loses the dog after attending a wedding at their vacation home in the Rockies. The independently financed movie stars Kevin Kline, Diane Keaton, Richard Jenkins and Elizabeth Moss. The film was shot last fall and is currently in post-production. No release date has been set. Trent Reznor announced on the NIN message board (via /Film) that he is no longer involved in Timur Bekmambetov’s upcoming horror thriller Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. As announced earlier this month, it was reported that Reznor had been tapped to score the film and possibly have a cameo appearance in the movie starring Benjamin Walker, Dominic Cooper, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Anthony Mackie. Here’s the exact quote from Reznor:

Don’t believe everything you read. As it turns out, I WON’T be working on (acting or scoring) ALVH after all. There’s no juicy story here, it’s just that when the news mysteriously leaked out about my involvement I hadn’t made up my mind completely, because various aspects of the project were changing. I felt the need to say something earlier this week because my inbox was filling up with speculation, and at that moment I thought I would be doing it. Confused yet? Apparently I am. Three new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Battle: Los Angeles starring Aaron Eckhart, Bridget Moynahan, Michael Pena and Michelle Rodriquez and directed by Jonathan Liebesman is expected to be the number one movie of the weekend at the domestic box office. The film’s music is written by Brian Tyler. Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album with Tyler’s score (click here to check out our announcement of the soundtrack).
