John Powell has won the Annie Award in the Music in a Feature Production category for his score for Dreamworks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon at tonight’s Annie Award ceremony in Los Angeles. The other contenders in the category were Sylvain Chomet (The Illusionist), David Hirschfelder (Legend of the Guardians), Harry Gregson-Williams (Shrek Forever After) and Pharrell Williams & Heitor Pereira for Despicable Me. The award is Powell’s first win as a solo composer, having previously won for his collaboration with Harry Gregson-Williams on the original Shrek and his collaboration with Hans Zimmer on Kung Fu Panda. Film Music Reporter has learned that Mychael Danna has started work on the upcoming drama Moneyball. The film tells the story of Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane’s successful attempt to put together a baseball club on a budget by employing computer-generated analysis to draft his players. The movie stars Brad Pitt, Robin Wright, Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Chris Pratt. Moneyball is based on a book by Michael Lewis (The Blind Side) and is directed by Bennett Miller who previously worked with Mychael Danna on 2005’s Oscar nominated biopic Capote. Jeff Danna co-scoring ‘Camelot’

As reported last year, Mychael Danna has been scoring the upcoming Starz TV show Camelot. We have learned since that his brother Jeff Danna has co-written the score for the period drama starring Jamie Campbell Bower, Joseph Fiennes, Eva Green, Tamsin Eggerton and Claire Forlani. The Danna brothers have worked together before numerous times on such movies as Green Dragon, Fracture, Lakeview Terrace and most recently on Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. ‘Unknown’ Soundtrack details

Varese Sarabande Records will release a soundtrack album for the upcoming thriller Unknown directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and starring Liam Neeson, January Jones, Diane Kruger, Frank Langella and Aidan Quinn. The film’s music is written by John Ottman and newcomer Alexander Rudd. The soundtrack includes 16 tracks of original score and will be released on March 8, 2011. ‘Ironclad’ Soundtrack announced

Varese Sarabande Records will release Lorne Balfe’s original score for the action adventure movie Ironclad directed by Jonathan English and starring Brian Cox, Paul Giamatti, Kate Mara, James Purefoy and Derek Jacobi. The album includes 18 tracks of score. The soundtrack will be released on March 1, 2011 and will exclusively be available on iTunes in the US, while a physical CD is coming out in Europe. Two new movies open in wide release this weekend.
The Roommate starring Leighton Meester and Minka Kelly features a score by John Frizzell. As reported earlier this week, Madison Gate Records has released a soundtrack album including Frizzell’s score.
The James Cameron-produced thriller Sanctum starring Ioann Gruffud, Richard Roxburgh and Alice Parkinson features music by David Hirschfelder. A soundtrack album has been released on Varese Sarabande Records as announced here. Read the rest of this entry »
A.R. Rahman, Randy Newman and Alan Menken to perform at the Academy Awards

According to the Hollywood Reporter, all Academy Award-nominated song will be performed at this year’s Oscar telecast. A.R. Rahman and Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine will perform the song If I Rise from Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours, which has lyrics co-written by Dido and Rollo Armstrong. Rahman is also nominated for his original score on the movie. Alan Menken, who is nominated for writing the song I See the Light from Disney’s animated film Tangled, will accompany singers Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi on the piano. Randy Newman will perform his song We Belong Together from Pixar’s Toy Story 3. Finally, Gwyneth Paltrow will be singing the nominated song Coming Home from Shana Feste’s Country Strong. The 83rd Academy Awards ceremony will take place on February 27 and will air on ABC.
‘Paul’ Soundtrack album announced

Universal Music has announced a soundtrack release for the upcoming sci-fi comedy Paul directed by Greg Mottola and starring Simon Pegg, Sigourney Weaver, Kristen Wiig, Jane Lynch, Jason Bateman, Bill Hader and Seth Rogen as the voice of Paul. The soundtrack album includes songs featured in the movie from such artists as The Only Ones, Bill Dee Riley, Todd Rundgren, King Harvest, Marvin Gaye, Max Romeo and the B 52’s. The album also includes 12 tracks from composer David Arnold who composed the original score for the movie as reported here. The soundtrack will be released in the UK on February 21 and a domestic release is expected closer to the US release date of the movie on March 18, 2011.
Michael Giacchino on ‘Good Morning America’

This morning, ABC’s Good Morning America featured a report on Michael Giacchino in their Countdown to the Oscars series. The composer talks about his working methods, what joining the Academy meant to him and his efforts on mentoring students in Los Angeles. Giacchino has a busy year ahead of him with six movies scheduled for release this year and Andrew Stanton’s John Carter of Mars release date recently being moved forward from a Summer to a March, 2012 release.

Ramin Djawadi taking over ‘Game of Thrones’

TV Squad reports that Ramin Djawadi has taken over scoring duties on the upcoming HBO series Game of Thrones. He is replacing composer Stephen Warbeck who was originally scoring the project as reported last year. The fantasy drama based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire stars Sean Bean, Mark Addy, Peter Dinklage and Lena Headey and will have its premiere on April 17, 2011 on HBO.
