Film Music Reporter has learned that Alan Silvestri has signed on to score the upcoming comic book movie Captain America: The First Avenger. The film marks the first collaboration between Silvestri and director Joe Johnston, who previously has worked with such composers as James Horner, Danny Elfman, James Newton Howard and Mark Isham. The film also marks Silvestri’s first scoring assignment since last year’s summer action film The A-Team and his first comic book adaptation since 1995’s Judge Dredd starring Sylvester Stallone. A number of composers, including Michael Giacchino and John Powell have been rumored to take the scoring assignment, but ultimately Silvestri was hired to score the film. ‘Mars Needs Moms’ Soundtrack announced

Walt Disney Records will release a soundtrack album for the upcoming animated film Mars Needs Moms. The soundtrack features about 50 minutes of the original score by Academy Award-nominated composer John Powell. The album will be released digitally on March 8, 2011. To listen to audio clips from the soundtrack, visit Amazon. Mars Needs Moms centers on young boy named Milo, who gains a deeper appreciation for his mom after Martians come to Earth to take her away. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross win Oscar for ‘The Social Network’

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have won the Oscar for their original score for David Fincher’s The Social Network. The award marks the first Oscar win for both composers, who both have been nominated for the first time. The score beat out Alexandre Desplat’s The King’s Speech, Hans Zimmer’s Incpetion, John Powell’s How to Train Your Dragon and A.R. Rahman’s 127 Hours.
In the Best Song category, Randy Newman won the Oscar for his original song We Belong Together from Toy Story 3.

Film Music Reporter has learned that Mark Mothersbaugh has been hired to score the upcoming crime thriller Safe. In the movie, a former elite agent rescues a young Chinese girl carrying vital secrets that both the Chinese and Russian Mafia are intent on obtaining in order to blackmail world governments. The film starring Jason Statham, Chris Sarandon and Robert John Burke is directed by Boaz Yakin. Yakin previously worked with composers Trevor Rabin (Remember the Titans), Joel McNeely (Uptown Girls), Lesley Barber (A Price Above Rubies, Death in Love) and Stewart Copeland (Fresh) on his earlier movies. The film is produced by Lawrence Bender (producer on all Quentin Tarantino-directed movies), as well as Dana Brunetti and Kevin Spacey (The Social Network) through their company Trigger Street Productions. Richard Gibbs is currently scoring the upcoming comedy Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer. The movie is based on is based on characters from Megan McDonald’s children’s book series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the comedy chronicles Judy Moody’s determination to have the most thrilling summer of her life, aided by her brother Stink and her fun-loving Aunt Opal. The film is directed by John Schultz and stars Jordana Beatty in the title role, Heather Graham and Jaleel White. Schultz and Gibbs previously collaborated on 2002’s Like Mike, 2003’s When Zachary Beaver Came to Town and 2005’s The Honeymooners. Schultz has also most recently worked together with composer John Debney on Aliens in the Attic. Weekly Film Music Roundup (February 25, 2011)

Two new movies are opening wide this weekend:
The action movie Drive Angry 3D directed by Patrick Lussier and starring Nicolas Cage and Amber Heard features music by Michael Wandmacher. A soundtrack album featuring the original score is now available on iTunes and will be released on CD on March 8 by Lakeshore Records. Also opening wide this weekend is the comedy Hall Pass. The film is directed by the Farrelly Brothers and stars Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis, Christina Applegate, Jenna Fisher and Richard Jenkins. The movie centers on a married man, who is granted the opportunity to have an affair by his wife. Hall Pass features a number of songs, but no original score (even though a cue named Card Sting written by Mike Post for the TV show Law & Order is used several times during the film). No plans for a soundtrack release have been announced.
Christophe Beck returning for ‘The Hangover Part II’

Christophe Beck is reteaming with director Todd Philips to score the comedy sequel The Hangover Part II. The first part released in 2009 still marks Beck’s highest grossing movie of his career. The project marks the fourth collaboration between Beck and Philips, who also worked together on School for Scoundrels and last year’s Due Date. In The Hangover sequel, the characters from the first part travel to Bangkok and find trouble when Stu (Ed Helms) gets married in the exotic location of Thailand. Apart from Helms, Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and Justin Bartha all return for the sequel. Also returning are Ken Jeong and Mike Tyson. They are joined by new cast members Jamie Chung, Juliette Lewis and Liam Neeson, who will make an appearance in the film. Warner Bros will release the movie on May 26, 2011. William Ross to conduct this year’s Oscar ceremony

According to The Hollywood Reporter, William Ross will be conducting the 83rd Academy Awards this Sunday. He previously conducted the 79th Oscars back in 2007. Ross is most well known as a conductor and orchestrator for such composers as Alan Silvestri and John Powell.
