Two new movies are opening wide this weekend:

300-rise-of-an-empireExpected to top the weekend box office is the action adventure epic 300: Rise of an Empire directed by Noam Murro and starring Sullivan Stapleton, Rodrigo Santoro, Eva Green, Callan Mulvey, Jack O’Connell and Lena Headey. The film’s original music is compowed by Junkie XL (Divergent, Paranoia). WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score earlier this week. mr-peabody-and-shermanAlso opening wide is DreamWorks Animation’s Mr. Peabody & Sherman directed by Rob Minkoff and featuring the voice talent of Ty Burrell, Max Charles, Leslie Mann, Stanley Tucci, Allison Janney, Ariel Winter, Stephen Colbert, Patrick Warburton, Mel Brooks, Lake Bell, Zach Callison and Dennis Haysbert. Danny Elfman (Spider-Man, Batman, Men in Black) has composed the film’s original music. Relativity Music Group has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as John Lennon’s Beautiful Boy and the original song Way Back When by Grizfolk. Marco Beltrami Takes Over Scoring Duties on Michael R. Roskam’s ‘The Drop’

marco-beltramiMarco Beltrami has taken over scoring duties on the upcoming crime thriller The Drop. The movie, which was previously entitled Animal Rescue, marks the English language feature debut of director Michael R. Roskam (Bullhead) and stars Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, Matthias Schoenaerts, James Gandolfini and John Ortiz. The film follows a lonely Boston bartender who rescues a puppy from a garbage can and becomes the target of the dog’s abusive and mentally unstable former owner. Dennis Lehane has written the screenplay based on his own short story (Mystic River, Shutter Island). Peter Chernin & Dylan Clark (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) are producing the project with Mike Larocca. Read the rest of this entry »

Ennio Morricone to Score Giuseppe Tornatore’s ‘The Correspondence’

ennio-morriconeEnnio Morricone is set to reunite with director Giuseppe Tornatore on the director’s upcoming romantic drama The Correspondence. The movie centers on the love affair between a professor and a younger woman working in the same field. No casting deals have been announced yet, but a well-known male actor is reportedly in talks for the leading role. Arturo Paglia and Isabella Cocuzza (The Best Offer) are producing the Paco Cinematografica and Warner Bros Italy production. Morricone’s and Tornatore’s previous collaborations include such films as Cinema Paradiso, Malena, The Legend of 1900, Baaria and last year’s The Best Offer.  Read the rest of this entry »

Cliff Martinez to Score HBO’s ‘The Normal Heart’

imageCliff Martinez has been hired to score the upcoming HBO original movie The Normal Heart. The film is directed by Ryan Murphy (Glee, Nip/Tuck, Eat Pray Love) and stars Mark Ruffalo, Taylor Kitsch, Matt Bomer, Julia Roberts, Jim Parsons, Jonathan Groff, Alfred Molina, Joe Mantello, Denis O’Hare, Stephen Spinella and Corey Stoll. The movie is based on the Tony-winning play by Larry Kramer (Women in Love) and tells the story of the onset of the HIV-AIDS crisis in New York City in the early 1980s. Kramer has also written the screenplay and Murphy is executive producing the project with Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity, Insidious), Dede Gardner (12 Years a Slave, World War Z) and Dante Di Loreto (American Horror Story, Glee). ‘The Motel Life’ Soundtrack Details

imageLakeshore Records will release a soundtrack album for the indie drama The Motel Life. The album features the film’s original score composed by David Holmes (Ocean’s Eleven, Out of Sight, Haywire). Also included are the songs from the movie by such artists as Jonathan Clay, Joe D’Augustine, Townes Van Zandt, Buddy Stuart, The Kills, Richmond Fontaine, Justin Townes Earle and Little Accidents. The soundtrack will be released on March 18, 2014 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. The Motel Life is directed by Alan & Gabe Polsky and stars Emile Hirsch, Stephen Dorff, Dakota Fanning, Kris Kristofferson, Garret Backstrom, Andrew Lee, Doc Divecchio, Nancy Youngblut. The movie based on the novel by Willy Vlautin follows two down-on-their-luck brothers who are forced to flee from their home to Reno after being involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident. ‘The Wilderness of James’ to Feature Music by Jónsi & Alex

imageJónsi & Alex have written the music for the indie coming-of-age drama The Wilderness of James. The film marks the feature directorial debut of Michael Johnson and stars Kodi Smit-McPhee, Virginia Madsen, Isabelle Fuhrman, Evan Ross and Danny DeVito. The movie follows a boy dealing with the absence of his father who begins to explore the wilderness of an intoxicating city. Through an infatuating girl and a charismatic stranger, he starts to open his eyes as he’s forced to deal with some hard truths. Johnson has also written the screenplay. Jonathan Schwartz (Like Crazy, Smashed) and Andrea Sperlig (Harsh Times) are producing the project for Super Crispy Enterainment. beneath-the-harvest-skyA soundtrack album will be released for the indie coming-of-age drama Beneath the Harvest Sky. The album features the film’s original music composed by Dustin Hamman. The soundtrack will be released digitally on April 4, 2014 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Audio clips are embedded after the jump. Beneath the Harvest Sky is written and directed by Aron Gaudet & Gita Pullapilly and stars Emory Cohen, Callan McAuliffe, Zoe Levin, Aiden Gillen and Carla Callo. The movie centers on two teenage boys and their last summer working the potato harvest. The drama premiered at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival and was picked by Tribeca Films for a release in select theaters on May 2 and an early VOD release on April 15. belle-and-sebastianThe Scottish indie pop band Belle & Sebastian is composing the score for the British TV comedy The Dog Thrower. The show is written and directed by Jon Ronson and stars Matthew Perry, Tim Key and Kimberley Nixon. The ITV production tells the story of a nervous young man who attempts to become popular by copying a charismatic man who is throwing his dog in the air in front of a crowd. The comedy is part of the Playhouse series on Sky Arts and is produced by Runaway Fridge. The band has previously written original music for Todd Solondz’s 2011 indie Storytelling. Marcelo Zarvos to Score Barry Levinson’s ‘The Humbling’

imageMarcelo Zarvos will be reteaming with director Barry Levinson (Rain Man) on the upcoming drama The Humbling. The film is based on a novel by Philip Roth (The Human Stain) and stars Al Pacino, Dianne Wiest, Greta Gerwig, Kyra Sedgwick, Mandy Patinkin and Charles Rodin. The movie follows an aging actor who has an affair with a lesbian woman half his age at a secluded country house in Connecticut. Levinson and Pacino are also producing the project with Jason Sosnoff. Zarvos has previously collaborated with Levinson on his last two theatrical features What Just Happened and The Bay, as well as on the HBO original movie You Don’t Know Jack. ‘The Walking Dead’ Vol. 2 Soundtrack Announced

walking-deadRepublic Records has announced a new soundtrack EP for the AMC hit series The Walking Dead. The release includes five new and previously unreleased songs inspired by and featured in the show, including tracks by Portugal. The Man, Ben Nichols, Sharon Van Etten, Lee DeWyze and A.C. Newman. The EP will be released on March 25, 2014 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. The label has previously released a soundtrack album for the show last spring. The Walking Dead based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman and scored by Bear McCreary stars Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Chandler Riggs, Melissa McBride, Emily Kinney, Danai Gurira, Chad Coleman and Sonequa Martin-Green.
