manhattanSigur Rós front man Jónsi and Alex Somers have been hired to score the upcoming WGN America original series Manhattan. The show is created by Sam Shaw (Masters of Sex) and stars John Benjamin Hickey, Olivia Williams, Daniel Stern, Ashley Zukerman and Rachel Brosnahan. The drama is set against the backdrop of the clandestine mission to build the world’s first atomic bomb in Los Alamos, New Mexico and follows the brilliant but flawed scientists and their families. Shaw is also executive producing the Skydance TV, Tribune Studios and Lionsgate TV production with David Ellison & Dana Goldberg (World War Z, Star Trek Into Darkness), Marcy Ross and Thomas Schlamme (The West Wing, Sports Night) who also directed the pilot episode. john-powellVariety is reporting that John Powell will be taking another sabbatical from film music following the completion of his score for this summer’s animated sequel How to Train Your Dragon 2. Instead, he will be writing a 45-minute oratorio to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of World War I. The piece, entitled Moltke will feature a libretto by artist-writer Michael Petry and is about the aide-de-camp to Prussia’s Kaiser Wilhelm II who was instrumental in making crucial decisions, before and during the war. The oratorio is expected to premiere next January with the Philharmonia Orchestra at the Westminster Cathedral in London. In addition, Powell will also be expanding a piece he composed in early 2012 with composer Gavin Greenaway for a Petry installation at the Palm Springs Art Museum called The Dilemma about the biblical history of men and women. railway-manVarese Sarabande has announced the details of the soundtrack album for the drama The Railway Man. The album features the film’s original music written by Academy Award-nominated composer David Hirschfelder (Elizabeth, Australia, Legend of the Guardians). The soundtrack will be released physically on May 27, 2014 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. The Railway Man is directed by Jonathan Teplitzky and stars Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman, Jeremy Irvine, Stellan Skarsgård and Hiroyuki Sanada. The movie follows a British Army officer who is tormented as a prisoner of war at a Japanese labour camp during World War II and discovers decades later that the Japanese interpreter he holds responsible for much of his treatment is still alive. The film is written and directed by Andy Hamilton & Guy Jenkin (Outnumbered) and stars Rosamund Pike, David Tennant, Billy Connolly, Ben Miller and Amelia Bullmore. The movie follows a couple who tries to keep their impending divorce secret from their extended family during a trip to one of their father’s birthday party. David M. Thompson (The Awakening) and Dan Winch are producing the BBC Films and Origin Pictures production. outcastGuillaume Roussel has been tapped to score the upcoming martial arts action movie Outcast. The film marks the directorial debut of stunt coordinator and fight choreographer Nick Powell and stars Nicolas Cage, Hayden Christensen and Liu Yifei. The movie is set in the 12th Century and follows two European Crusaders who chose to wander off toward western China, where they become entangled in romance and antagonism with local royalty. James Dormer (Strike Back) has written the screenplay.
