John Ottman has officially signed on to score the upcoming superhero film sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past. The film reunites the composer with Bryan Singer who is directing his third entry in the franchise. The movie acts as a sequel to both 2011’s X-Men: First Class (scored by Henry Jackman) and 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand (scored by John Powell) and stars Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore and Daniel Cudmore from the original trilogy, as well as James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult from the last part in the series. They are joined by new cast members Peter Dinklage, Omar Sy, Booboo Stewart and Fan Bingbing, Singer is also writing the story and Simon Kinberg, Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman are penning the script. The director is also producing the project with Vaughn, Kinberg and Richard & Lauren Shuler Donner.

Christophe Beck Scoring ‘The Hangover Part III’
Christophe Beck is scoring the upcoming comedy sequel The Hangover Part III. The film is directed by Todd Phillips and stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Ken Jeong, Heather Graham, Jeffrey Tambor, Justin Bartha, John Goodman, Sasha Barrese, Gillian Vigman and Jamie Chung. Phillips has also written the script with Craig Mazin (Identity Thief) and is producing the third and final part in the Hangover trilogy with Dan Goldberg. Beck has previously collaborated with Phillips on the first two The Hangover movies, as well as on the features School for Scoundrels and Due Date. The Hangover Part III will be released on May 24, 2013 by Warner Bros. Pictures.
John Debney to Score ‘Broken Horses’
John Debney has signed on to score the upcoming thriller Broken Horses. The film is directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and stars Anton Yelchin, Chris Marquette, Vincent D’Onofrio, Thomas Jane, Sean Patrick Flanery and Maria Valverde. The movie is set in the shadows of the US-Mexico border gang wars and has been described as a thriller about the bonds of brotherhood, the laws of loyalty, and the futility of violence. The film marks the first English-language film of Chopra who has previously helmed the box office hit 3 Idiots. The Indian director has co-written the screenplay with Abhijat Joshi (Eklavya – The Royal Guard) and is also producing Broken Horses with Subhash Dhar and David Hoberman & Todd Lieberman for Mandeville Films.
Heitor Pereira to Return for ‘The Smurfs 2’
Heitor Pereira is reuniting with director Raja Gosnell on the upcoming hybrid live action/animated sequel The Smurfs 2. The family comedy stars Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Sofia Vergara and Hank Azaria who all reprise their characters from the original movie. Brendan Gleeson joins the cast as Patrick Winslow’s stepfather, Victor Doyle. The movie’s voice talent includes Katy Perry, Jonathan Winters, Alan Cumming, Fred Armisen, George Lopez, Anton Yelchin, John Oliver, Christina Ricci and JB Smoove. J. David Stem & David N. Weiss (Shrek 2), Karey Kirkpatrick (Over the Hedge) and Jay Scherick & David Ronn (Guess Who, Zookeeper) have written the screenplay based on the characters and works of Peyo and Jordan Kerner (Fried Green Tomatoes) is producing the project.
Dustin O’Halloran to Score ‘Posthumous’
Dustin O’Halloran is scoring the upcoming comedy drama Posthumous. The film is written and directed by Lulu Wang and stars Jack Huston, Brit Marling. Lambert Wilson, Tom Schilling and Alexander Fehling. The movie is set in Berlin and follows a struggling artist whose artwork skyrockets in value when he is mistakenly thought to have killed himself. Bernadette Bürgi is producing the project for Flying Box Productions and Skady Lis & Andro Steinborn are co-producing for Getaway Pictures and Arden Films.
Max Richter Scoring ‘Last Days on Mars’
Max Richter has been tapped to score the sci-fi thriller Last Days on Mars. The film marks the feature directorial debut of Ruairi Robinson who received an Academy Award nomination for his short Fifty Percent Grey and stars Liev Schreiber, Olivia Williams, Romola Garai, Elias Koteas, Tom Cullen, Goran Kostic and Johnny Harris. The movie centers on a group of astronauts on an exploratory mission to Mars who discover colonies of bacteria living deep within the permafrost. Clive Dawson has written the thriller’s screenplay based on a short story by Sydney J. Bounds. Michael Kuhn (The Duchess) is producing the project with Andrea Cornwell. Last Days on Mars is set to be released this fall in the UK.
‘Hot Guys with Guns’ to Feature Music by Mervyn Warren
Mervyn Warren has started work on his score for the upcoming crime comedy Hot Guys with Guns. The film marks the directorial debut of Doug Spearman (Noah’s Arc) and stars Brian McArdle, Marc Anthony Samuel, Darryl Stephens, Kamar de los Reyes, Jay Huguley, Alan Blumenfeld, Joan Ryan and Trey McCurley. The movie revolves around an actor and his ex-boyfriend who find themselves sucked in a crime spree sending shockwaves through Hollywoood’s Velvet Mafia. Spearman has also written the screenplay and is producing the project with Kelly Jones and Suzan Jones. Apart from composing the score, Warren has also written, performed and arranged the original song Something to Shoot For, which will be playing over a Bond-esque, animated opening sequence.
Mateo Messina to Score ‘The Angriest Man in Brooklyn’
Mateo Messina is currently scoring the upcoming comedy The Angriest Man in Brooklyn. The film is directed by Phil Alden Robinson and stars Robin Williams, Mila Kunis, James Earl Jones, Peter Dinklage and Melissa Leo. The movie follows a stand-in doctor who mistakenly tells an obnoxious patient he has 90 minutes to live and then must locate him as the man goes on a whirlwind tour of the city. Daniel Taplitz (Breakin’ All the Rules) has written the screenplay and Bob Cooper (John Tucker Must Die, Mr. Woodcock), Tyler Mitchell (Lucky Number Slevin, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone) and Daniel J. Walker are producing the project. Messina’s score will feature the hang drum combined with the orchestra.
J Mascis Scoring ‘Sunlight Jr.’
J Mascis has composed the score for the upcoming romantic drama Sunlight Jr.. The film is written and directed by Laurie Collyer (Sherrybaby) and stars Naomi Watts, Matt Dillon, Norman Reedus and Tess Harper. The movie follows a convenience store clerk and her paraplegic boyfriend who are trapped in a generational cycle of poverty and ignorance. Andera Roa (Drinking Buddies) is producing the project for Freight Yard Films, Charlie Corwin (The Squid and the Whale) is producing for Original Media and Ariel Elia is producing for Empyrean Pictures. Mascis is best known as the singer, guitarist and songwriter for the underground rock band Dinosaur Jr. whose music has been used in numerous films, including Reality Bites, Young Adult and Grace of my Heart.
Paul Englishby Scoring ‘Sunshine on Leith’
This week, Paul Englisby has recorded his score for the film adaptation of the stage musical Sunshine on Leith. The movie is directed by Dexter Fletcher (Wild Bill) and stars Peter Mullan, Jane Horrocks, George McKay, Kevin Guthrie, Antonia Thomas and Freya Mavor. Stephen Greenhorn has written screenplay based on his musical, which takes the lyrics of songs from the Scottish pop-folk band The Proclaimers and uses them in story about a young man and a woman who have to re-learn how to live life in Edinburgh after coming home from serving in Afghanistan. Andrew Macdonald (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later) & Allon Reich (Dredd, Never Let Me Go) are producing the project for DNA Films and Arabella Page Croft & Kieran Parker (Outpost, Legacy) are producing for Black Camel Pictures.
