Four new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the animated feature Smallfoot directed by Karey Kirkpatrick and starring Channing Tatum, Zendaya, James Corden, Common, LeBron James, Gina Rodriguez, Danny DeVito and Yara Shahidi. The director and Wayne Kirkpatrick have composed the film’s original songs and Heitor Pereira (Despicable Me, Minions, The Angry Birds Movie) has composed the film’s original score. Also opening wide is the horror thriller Hell Fest directed by Gregory Plotkin and starring Amy Forsyth, Reign Edwards, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Christian James, Roby Attal, Matt Mercurio and Tony Todd. The film’s original music is composed by Bear McCreary (The Walking Dead, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Battlestar Galactica, Outlander, Happy Death Day). Sparks & Shadows has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as tracks by Brendan McKian, John Massari and Crisis Couture. Another wide release this week is the comedy Night School directed by Malcolm D. Lee and starring Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish, Rob Riggle, Taran Killam and Romany Malco. David Newman (Girls Trip, Anastasia, Serenity, Ice Age, The Flintstones) has composed the film’s original score. Back Lot Music has released a digital EP featuring two original songs by Trinidad James (feat. The Hipster Orchestra) and Frankie J & Humby (feat. Romany). Also opening nationwide is the new film adaptation of Little Women directed by Clare Niederpruem and starring Lea Thompson, Sarah Davenport, Melanie Stone, Allie Jennings, Taylor Murphy, Lucas Gabreel, Ian Bohen, Stuart Edge, Elise Jones and Bart Johnson. The film’s original score is composed by Robert Allen Elliott (Free Town, The Saratov Approach). No word on a soundtrack release. Opening in limited release is the crime comedy The Old Man & the Gun directed by David Lowery and starring Robert Redford, Casey Affleck, Danny Glover, Tika Sumpter, Tom Waits and Sissy Spacek. Daniel Hart (Pete’s Dragon, Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, A Ghost Story, The Exorcist, SMILF) has composed the film’s original music. Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as songs by The Kinks, Scott Walker and Jackson C. Frank. Also opening in limited release is the drama Monsters and Men written and directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and starring John David Washington, Anthony Ramos and Kelvin Harrison Jr. The film’s original score is composed by Kris Bowers (Green Book, Dear White People, For the People). No soundtrack album has been announced. The movie, which follows a young father who witnesses the police shooting of an unarmed black man, premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is being released by Neon. Also opening in select theaters is the documentary Free Solo directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi & Jimmy Chin. The movie follows solo climber Alex Honnold, as he prepares to achieve his lifelong dream: scaling the face of the world’s most famous rock – the 3,200-foot El Capitan in Yosemite National Park – without a rope. Marco Beltrami (Logan, Scream, 3:10 to Yuma, Scream, A Quiet Place, World War Z) has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced yet. Another limited release this week is the indie comedy drama All About Nina written and directed by Eva Vives and starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Common, Chace Crawford, Clea DuVall, Kate del Castillo and Beau Bridges. The film’s original score is composed by John Dragonetti (The Internet’s Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz, We Are Legion: The Story of the Hacktivists, Married, Freeloaders). The composer’s theme for the main character is now available as a digital single (click here for more information). The movie also features the currently unreleased original song The Train performed by Common & Sara Bareilles.
Also opening in select cities is the documentary Bad Reputation directed by Kevin Kerslake and about the early years of Joan Jett as the founder and backbone of the all-female band the Runaways during the 1970s punk scene. The film’s original score is composed by Jacques Brautbar. Legacy Recordings has released a soundtrack album featuring songs by Jett and her bands The Blackhearts and The Runaways, as well as tracks by Bikini Kill, Fea & more. Also opening in limited release is the coming-of-age comedy drama Summer ’03 written and directed by Becca Gleason and starring Joey King, Andrea Savage, Paul Scheer, June Squibb, Jack Kilmer, Erin Darke, Kelly Lamor Wilson, Stephen Ruffin and Logan Medina. Nathan Matthew David (The Last Word, Angie Tribeca, Slice, Satisfaction) has composed the film’s original score. Also opening in select theaters is the romantic drama Cruise written and directed by Robert Siegel and starring Spencer Boldman, Emily Ratajkowski and Sebastian Maniscalco. The film’s original score is composed by Jay Wadley (Indignation, The OA). The movie is set in the 1980s and follows a young Italian-American who falls for a Jewish girl from Long Island. Another limited release this week is the documentary Matangi / Maya / M.I.A directed by Steve Loveridge about rapper/singer-songwriter, Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam aka M.I.A.. Dhani Harrison & Paul Hicks (Learning to Drive, Good Girls Revolt, Beautiful Creatures, White Famous, The Divide) have composed the film’s original score. No word on a soundtrack release. Premiering in select theaters and on Netflix today is the psychological thriller Hold the Dark directed by Jeremy Saulnier and starring Jeffrey Wright, Alexander Skarsgård, James Badge Dale, Riley Keough and Julian Black Antelope. Brooke Blair & Will Blair (Green Room, Blue Ruin, I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore, Wheelman, Sweet Virginia) have composed the film’s original score.
