Two new movies are opening wide this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the sci-fi comedy The Watch directed by Akiva Schaffer and starring Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, Rosemarie Dewitt and Richard Ayoade. Also opening wide is the dance movie Step Up Revolution directed by Scott Speer and starring Kathryn McCormick, Ryan Guzman and Stephen Boss. Aaron Zigman has composed the film’s score. Interscope Records has released a soundtrack including the songs featured in the movie by artists including Travis Parker, Timbaland, Fergie, Jennifer Lopez, M.I.A., Far East Movement, Sohanny and Vein, Diplo and My Name is Kay. ‘Searching for Sugar Man’ Soundtrack Details

Sony Legacy will be releasing a soundtrack album for the documentary Searching for Sugar Man. The album includes a selection of songs by the film’s title character Rodriguez, which are featured in the movie but originally found on his records Cold Fact and Coming from Reality. The soundtrack will be released on July 24, 2012 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Audio clips can be checked out below. Searching for Sugar Man directed by Malik Bendjelloul tells the story of Rodriguez, a 70′s US rock icon whose albums were critically well-received, but never achieved commercial success and faded away into obscurity among rumors of a gruesome death until a record made its way to South Africa, where his music became a phenomenal success. The film produced by Simon Chinn (Man on Wire) premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and has been picked up by Sony Pictures Classics.

Sundance 2012 Film Music Roundup (Part 1)

Over the next week, we will be looking at the music and composers of some of the most high profile titles premiering at the Sundance Film Festival that haven’t been covered yet on this page.

One of the best reviewed film so far at the festival is the documentary West of Memphis directed by Amy Berg who had been Academy Award-nominated for the 2006 movie Deliver Us from Evil. West of Memphis produced by Peter Jackson & Fran Walsh (The Lord of the Rings), Lorri Davis and Damien Echols centers on the wrongful conviction case of three Arkansas teenagers (known as the West Memphis Three) who were found guilty in 1994 of the ritual murder of three eight-year-old boy. The film’s music is written by Nick Cave & Warren Ellis (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Road).
