Opening in theaters nationwide this weekend is the sci-fi horror thriller Afraid written and directed by Chris Weitz and starring John Cho, Katherine Waterston, Havana Rose Liu,Lukita Maxwell,  David Dastmalchian and Keith Carradine. The film’s original score is composed by Alex Weston (The Farewell, ExpatsWander Darkly, The Adults, The Novice, Goodnight Mommy) who also co-wrote the original song I Love You (with Weitz) for the project. Madison Gate Records will release a soundtrack album according to the movie’s end credits, but no announcement has been made yet. Also opening wide is the biographical drama Reagan directed by Sean McNamara and starring Dennis Quaid, Penelope Ann Miller, Jon Voight, Kevin Dillon, Olek Krupa, David Henrie, Mena Suvari, Xander Berkely, C. Thomas Howell, Trevor Donovan, Robert Davi, Kevin Sorbo Lesley-Anne Down and Jennifer O’Neill. John Coda (Bratz, The King’s Daughter, HooveyCats & Dogs 3: Paws Unite) has composed the film’s original score. No word on a score release. The film starring Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Jurnee Smollett & Marc Maron follows the FBI’s investigation into a domestic terrorist group determined to impose their racist ideology onto mainstream society. The track is written and produced by Dan Smith (from Bastille) and performed by Killian Scott (who stars as Orpheus) and is now available to stream/download on Amazon and any other major digital music services. The film is directed by Edmund Stenson and Daniel Roher (Navalny, Once Were Brothers) and centers on the Pelletier family whose world changes forever when three of their four children are diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a rare and incurable disease that leads to severe visual impairment. Pharrell Williams has written five original songs for the animated documentary Piece by Piece. Song titles include Piece by Piece (feat. Princess Anne High School Fabulous Marching Cavaliers), It’s Happening (co-written with Shelly Berg), Virginia Boy (feat. Shae Haley), the closing credit song For Real, as well as L’Ego Odyssey (co-written with Shelly Berg), a multi-part suite that appears in different portions across the film. The movie also features numerous hit songs by the Grammy Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated singer/songwriter (including Drop It Like It’s Hot & Happy), deconstructed, remixed, and remade for the project. The movie based on Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel is set in Jim Crow-era Florida and follows an idealistic Black high schooler whose aims of attending college are upended when racist law officials falsely accuse and then convict him of a crime and he gets sent to an abusive reformatory school.
