Three new movies are opening wide this weekend:

Tony Scott’s new thriller Unstoppable starring Denzel Washington, Chris Pine and Rosario Dawson features a score by Harry Gregson-Williams. The movie has received the best reviews for any movie by the director in over a decade. The score has been described as a hybrid electronic/orchestral score in the vein of Gregson-Williams’ other scores for the director (Man on Fire, The Taking of Pelham 1,2,3). Trevor Rabin to score ‘I Am Number Four’

Film Music Reporter has learned that Trevor Rabin has been hired to score the upcoming sci-fi action movie I Am Number Four. The movie is directed by D.J. Caruso, who previously worked with such composers as Thomas Newman (The Salton Sea), Philip Glass (Taking Lives), Christophe Beck (Two for the Money), Geoff Zanelli (Disturbia) and Brian Tyler (Eagle Eye). The movie stars Timothy Olyphant, Kevin Durand and Teresa Palmer and centers around the character of John, an extraordinary teen, masking his true identity and passing as a typical high school student to elude a deadly enemy seeking to destroy him. The movie is produced by Michael Bay, who previously worked with Trevor Rabin on such movies as Armageddon and Bad Boys 2. The Dreamworks movie will be the first film released by Walt Disney Pictures and is scheduled to open on February 18, 2011. To watch the trailer, check out the official movie webpage. ‘Faster’ soundtrack album announced

Lakeshore Records has announced a digital release of the upcoming soundtrack to the action thriller Faster starring Dwayne Johnson and Billy Bob Thornton. The album will be released on November 23 and features the score by composer Clint Mansell, as well as songs by Iggy Pop, The Heavy among others.

Desplat talking about Harry Potter score

A number of interviews with composer Alexandre Desplat on his score for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 have been published over the last couple of days. AinItCoolNews conducted an interview with the composer talking in detail on how he got involved in the project and his approach to the movie’s score. Daniel Schweiger from Film Music Magazine also did an interview with Desplat talking about working on Harry Potter and also confirming his involvement in involvement in the last part of the series. Finally, the British radio station Classic FM uploaded a short audio interview with the composer where he talks about following the footsteps of John Williams, Patrick Doyle and Nicholas Hooper and working with the LSO, which recorded his soundtrack for the movie. The Next Three Days soundtrack album announced

Lionsgate Records has announced a soundtrack album for the upcoming thriller The Next Three Days directed by Paul Haggis and starring Russell Crowe, Elizabeth Banks and Olivia Wilde. Danny Elfman wrote the score, which the composer also conducted during the recording sessions in London. Apart from 23 tracks from the score, the album also includes the two songs Mistake and Be The One by Moby. Ilan Eshkeri scores Ralph Fiennes’ Coriolanus

Ilan Eshkeri recently recorded the score for the upcoming drama Coriolanus. The movie marks the directorial debut of actor Ralph Fiennes who also stars in the movie alongside Gerard Butler, Vanessa Redgrave and Brian Cox. In the movie based on Shakespeare’s play adapted by Oscar nominated screenwriter John Logan (Gladiator, The Last Samurai, The Aviator), a banished hero of Rome allies with a sworn enemy to take his revenge on the city. According to the composer’s Facebook page, the score is in a minimalist contemporary style. No release date has been set yet for Coriolanus, but the movie is expected to open next year.

The King’s Speech soundtrack album details

Alexandre Desplat’s score for The King’s Speech will be released by Decca Records on November 22. The soundtrack album features about 30 minutes of score, plus two classical pieces by Beethoven which have been specifically recorded for the movie. ‘Country Strong’ gets Michael Brook score

Michael Brook has written the score for the upcoming country-themed drama Country Strong. The movie directed by Shana Feste starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Tim McGraw, Garrett Hedlund and Leighton Meester centers on a rising country-music songwriter (Hedlund) who sparks with a fallen star. Feste previously worked with composer Christophe Beck on her last movie The Greatest. A soundtrack album featuring the songs in the movie has already been released by Sony Music. The Screen Gems movie will get a limited release on December 22 and is planned to receive a wide release on January 7, 2011. The composer duo of Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman has been hired to score the upcoming comedy Jumping the Broom. In the movie, two very different African American families converge on Martha’s Vineyard one weekend for a wedding. The movie stars Julie Bowen, Paula Patton, Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine and Mike Epps. Jumping the Broom marks director Salim Akil’s feature directorial debut.  The Sony Pictures movie which has entered post production will be released on May 6, 2011. Tangled soundtrack album coming

Walt Disney Records will release a soundtrack album to the upcoming animated movie Tangled on November 16. Both the film’s songs and score written by Alan Menken are included on the album.
