How To Train Your Dragon score album coming

John Powell’s score to Dreamworks Animation’s How To Train Your Dragon will be released by Varese Sarabande Records on March 23. The movie follows the adventures of a hapless young Viking who aspires to hunt dragons becomes the unlikely owner of a young dragon himself, and learns there may be more to the creatures than he assumed. The film’s voice cast includes Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, Jonah Hill and America Ferrara. How To Train Your Dragon marks John Powell’s first solo gig for Dreamworks Animation after having co-written the scores for Antz, Shrek, Chicken Run and Kung Fu Panda. The movie will open in theaters on March 26.

The Pacific soundtrack album announced

The score for the upcoming HBO mini-series The Pacific will be released on March 9 by Rhino Records. The music is by Hans Zimmer, Geoff Zanelli and Blake Neely. The epic 10-part miniseries is based on the true stories of World War II Marines. It tracks the intertwined real-life journeys of three U.S. Marines-Robert Leckie (James Badge Dale), Eugene Sledge (Joe Mazzello), and John Basilone (Jon Seda)-across the vast canvas of the Pacific Theater during World War II.  The miniseries follows these men and their fellow Marines from their first battle with the Japanese on Guadalcanal, through the rain forests of Cape Gloucester and the strongholds of Peleliu, across the bloody sands of Iwo Jima and through the horror of Okinawa, and finally to their triumphant but uneasy return home after V-J Day.

Harold Faltermeyer on Cop Out

Kevin Smith’s action buddy comedy Cop Out starring Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan and Sean William Scott premiered in theaters yesterday. The movie marks composer Harold Faltermeyer’s return to Hollwood film scoring. Giacchino and Disney to reunite on John Carter of Mars

Michael Giacchino will continue his collaboration with Walt Disney Pictures on the upcoming John Carter of Mars. The movie directed by Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, Wall-E) marks the director’s first live action feature and is scheduled for release in 2012. The cast features Taylor Kitsch, Willem Dafoe, Thomas Haden Church and Mark Strong. The film chronicles the journey of Civil-War veteran John Carter, who finds himself battling a new and mysterious war amidst a host of strange Martian inhabitants, including Tars Tarkas and Dejah Thoris.

David Arnold to score Morning Glory

David Arnold has been hired to score the upcoming romantic comedy Morning Glory. The movie starring Rachel McAdams, Harrison Ford, Diane Keaton, Patrick Wilson and Jeff Goldsmith is scheduled to come out this fall. The project marks the second collaboration between Arnold and director Roger Michell who previously worked together on Changing Lanes.

Arnold also recently recorded his score for Made in Dagenham aka Dagenham Girls for director Nigel Cole (Calendar Girls, A Lot Like Love). The movie about the 1968 strike at the Ford Dagenham car plant, where female workers walked out in protest against sexual discrimination stars Rosamund Pike, Miranda Richardson and Bob Hoskins and is expected to come out later this year.

Arnold also has the third chapter in The Chronicles of Narnia series entitled The Voyage of the Dawn Treader coming out this December.

In the lengthy video interview, Horner talks about his Academy Award-nominated score for Avatar, the other Oscar nominated scores and the current state of film music. John Debney joining Predators

John Debney has been chosen to score the upcoming action horror movie Predators. The movie is directed by Nimrod Antal (Vacancy, Armored) and stars Topher Grace, Adrien Brody and Laurence Fishburne. Debney previously worked with writer and producer Robert Rodriguez on Sin City, the first two Spy Kids movies and The Adventures of Shark-Boy and Lava-Girl. The movie is set to open this July and follows Iron Man 2 as another high profile summer movie for the busy composer. The announcement ends speculation that Alan Silvestri might return to the franchise, as the movie is a direct sequel to the orginal Predator movie that Silvestri has scored in 1987.

Rachel Portman scoring Never Let Me Go

Rachel Portman has been hired to score the upcoming Mark Romanek directed movie Never Let Me Go. The movie based on the novel by Kazua Ishiguro is starring Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield and Keira Knighley. The film will be released later this year by Fox Searchlight.

Portman’s involvement in the movie has been revealed by a picture posted on the director’s Posterous account where he posted a picture of Portman working on the movie last week in London. You can check out a bigger version of the picture at http://markromanek.posterous.com/

Elfman on Alice in Wonderland

Sorority Row Score Album Released

This week, Lucian Piane’s score for the horror movie Sorority Row was released on iTunes from E1 Music. The album features 30 tracks from the score, as well as 2 songs from the movie’s main titles and finale which were co-written by Piane.
