Only one movie is opening wide this weekend:

Opening in almost 4000 theaters is the animated feature sequel Ice Age: Continental Drift directed by Steve Martino & Mike Thurmeier and featuring the voice talent of Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, Queen Latifah, Seann William Scott, Josh Peck, Jennifer Lopez, Peter Dinklage, Wanda Sykes and Aziz Ansari. John Powell who has scored the previous two films in the series is returning for the fourth installment. A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music has been released on Varese Sarabande. Opening in limited release is the psychological thriller Red Lights directed by Rodrigo Cortéz and starring Robert De Niro, Cillian Murphy, Sigourney Weaver, Joely Richardson, Toby Jones and Elizabeth Olsen. The film’s score is composed by Victor Reyes who previously scored the director’s 2010 thriller Buried. A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score has been released earlier this year on Lakeshore Records when the film premiered in Europe. Behind the Music of the CW’s ‘Arrow’

The CW has published a behind-the-scenes look at the recording sessions of the score the pilot for the network’s upcoming superhero drama Arrow. The video features interviews with the show’s composer Blake Neely,  co-writers and executive producers Mark Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg, as well as footage from the orchestral scoring sessions. The music was recorded with a full 80 piece orchestra at the Warner Bros. Eastwood Scoring Stage. Check out the video after the jump. Arrow is a modern retelling of the story of the DC Comics character Green Arrow and stars Stephen Amell as the vigilante superhero who fights crime using archery, martial arts and technology under his secret identity as Oliver Queen, a wealthy playboy and billionaire industrialist-turned-outspoken politician in Star City. Brendan Canning to Score Paul Schrader’s ‘The Canyons’

According to The Playlist, Broken Social Scene member Brendan Canning will be scoring the upcoming indie drama The Canyons. The contemporary L.A. noir film is directed by Paul Schrader and written by Bret Easton Ellis (American Psycho, The Rules of Attraction). The movie stars James Deen, Lindsay Lohan, Nolan Funk and Amanda Brook and explores the dangers of sexual obsession and ambition among a group of young people in their 20’s and how one chance meeting connected to the past unravels all of their live. Braxton Pope (Shrink) is producing the project. Schrader’s previous musical collaborators on his directorial efforts include Girogio Moroder (Cat People, American Gigolo), Angelo Badalamenti (Auto Focus, Forever Mine) and Gabriel Yared (Adam Resurrected). ‘Samsara’ Soundtrack Announced

Varese Sarabande Records has announced a soundtrack album for the non-verbal film Samsara. The release features the film’s music composed by Michael Stearns, Lisa Gerrard and Marcello De Francisci. The soundtrack will be released on August 21, 2012 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Samsara directed by Ron Fricke and produced by Mark Magidson (Baraka, Chronos) was filmed over a period of more than four years in twenty-five countries on five continents and uses 65mm cinematography to document sacred grounds, disaster zones, industrial complexes and natural wonders as it explores the mundane and miraculous wonders of the world. The movie premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival and has been picked up by Oscilloscope Laboratories for a domestic release on August 24. Read the rest of this entry »

Randy Newman to Score ‘Monsters University’

Randy Newman has confirmed in a recent interview with Laughing Place at the world premiere of Pixar’s Brave in Hollywood that he will be returning to score the studio’s next animated feature Monsters University. The composer previously scored the original 2001 Monsters, Inc. film, for which he received his first Academy Award for the song If I Didn’t Have You and was also nominated for his score. During the interview, Newman mentions that he will also be writing a new song for the prequel. Check out the interview, as well as the film’s teaser trailer after the jump. ‘High Ground’ Soundtrack Details

Varese Sarabande has revealed the soundtrack details for the documentary High Ground. The album features the film’s original score composed by Chris Bacon (Source Code, Gnomeo and Juliet). The soundtrack will be released digitally on July 31, 2012. Audio clips can be checked out below. High Ground directed by Michael Brown and produced by Don Hahn (The Lion King) tells the true story of eleven wounded veterans whose road to recovery takes them to the top of a Himalayan giant on a journey to heal the wounds of war. ‘A Symphony of Hope: The Haiti Project’ Live Concert Premiere Announced

On August 3, 2012, A Symphony of Hope: The Haiti Project will have its world premiere live concert as part of the Grand Performances Music, Movement and Meaning program in downtown Los Angeles. The music will be performed by the Hollywood Studio Symphony Orchestra and Choir and conducted by Lukas Richman. The event also features special guest performances by composer Mark Isham and Lucy Schwartz. In addition to the free concert, there will also be a Fundraising Dinner and Silent Auction before the concert. Christopher Lennertz to Score ‘Thanks for Sharing’

Christopher Lennertz has taken over scoring duties on the indie comedy drama Thanks for Sharing. The film marks the directorial debut of Stuart Blumberg who has received an Academy Award nomination for co-writing the screenplay for 2010’s The Kids Are All Right. Mark Ruffalo, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tim Robbins, Joely Richardson, Patrick Fugit, Josh Gad and Alecia Moore are starring in the movie, which revolves around a group of unlikely friends in a 12-step program for recovering sex addicts in New York City. Blumberg shares writing credit with actor Matt Winston. The dramedy is produced by Olympus Pictures’ Leslie Urdang, Dean Vanech & Miranda de Pencier (Beginners) who previously worked with Lennertz on the 2009 drama Adam starring Hugh Dancy and Rose Byrne. ‘The Bourne Legacy’ Soundtrack Details

Varese Sarabande Records has announced the details of the soundtrack release for Tony Gilroy’s action thriller The Bourne Legacy. The album features the film’s original score composed by James Newton Howard. Also included is a new version of Moby’s song Extreme Ways, which has been featured in all of the previous three films in the Bourne series. The soundtrack will be released on July 31, 2012 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Audio clips will be added to this article in a couple of weeks. The Bourne Legacy starring Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach, Albert Finney, Scott Glenn and Joan Allen will be released on August 10, 2012 by Universal Pictures. Intrada Records has announced a new soundtrack release for the 1966 spy thriller The Quiller Memorandum directed by Michael Anderson and starring George Segal, Alec Guinness, Max Von Sydow and Senta Berger. The album features the film’s original music composed and conducted by John Barry, including the Wednesday Child’s main theme, which is also featured in a vocal version performed by Matt Munro.
