Varese Sarabande has announced the details of the soundtrack album for the drama The Railway Man. The album features the film’s original music written by Academy Award-nominated composer David Hirschfelder (Elizabeth, Australia, Legend of the Guardians). The soundtrack will be released physically on May 27, 2014 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. The Railway Man is directed by Jonathan Teplitzky and stars Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman, Jeremy Irvine, Stellan Skarsgård and Hiroyuki Sanada. The movie follows a British Army officer who is tormented as a prisoner of war at a Japanese labour camp during World War II and discovers decades later that the Japanese interpreter he holds responsible for much of his treatment is still alive. The drama was released earlier this month by the Weinstein Company and is now playing in select theaters.

Three new movies are opening wide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the animated sequel Rio 2 directed by Carlinhos Brown and featuring the voices of Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, will.i.am, Jemaine Clement, Rodrigo Santoro, Tracy Morgan, George Lopez, Leslie Mann, Jamie Foxx, Rita Moreno, Bruno Mars and Kristin Chenoweth. The film’s original’s music is composed by John Powell (How to Train Your Dragon) and Sergio Mendes serves as the film’s executive music producer. Also opening wide is the sports drama Draft Day directed by Ivan Reitman and starring Kevin Costner, Jennifer Garner, Denis Leary, Frank Langella, Sam Elliot, Sean Combs, Terry Crews, Ellen Burstyn and Chadwick Boseman. John Debney (The Passion of the Christ, Iron Man 2) has composed the film’s original music. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score earlier this week. David Hirschfelder Scoring ‘The Railway Man’
David Hirschfelder is composing the score for the upcoming drama The Railway Man. The movie is directed by Jonathan Teplitzy (Burning Man) and stars Colin Firth as Eric Lomax, a British officer who was captured and tortured by the Japanese in World War II and is persuaded by his wife to seek out and confront one of his captors a few decades later. Nicole Kidman, Jeremy Irvine, Stellan Skarsgard and Hiroyuki Sanada are co-starring. Frank Cottrell Boyce (Millions, Hilary & Jackie) and Andy Paterson (producer of Girl with a Pearl Earring) have written the screenplay based on Lomax’s autobiography. Paterson is also producing the Australian and British co-production with Chris Brown (The Proposition, Daybreakers) and Bill Curbishley.
