Three new movies are opening wide this weekend:

rio-2Opening in most theaters is the animated sequel Rio 2 directed by Carlinhos Brown and featuring the voices of Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, will.i.am, Jemaine Clement, Rodrigo Santoro, Tracy Morgan, George Lopez, Leslie Mann, Jamie Foxx, Rita Moreno, Bruno Mars and Kristin Chenoweth. The film’s original’s music is composed by John Powell (How to Train Your Dragon) and Sergio Mendes serves as the film’s executive music producer. Atlantic Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film. Check out our previous article for the full album details. draft-dayAlso opening wide is the sports drama Draft Day directed by Ivan Reitman and starring Kevin Costner, Jennifer Garner, Denis Leary, Frank Langella, Sam Elliot, Sean Combs, Terry Crews, Ellen Burstyn and Chadwick Boseman. John Debney (The Passion of the ChristIron Man 2) has composed the film’s original music. oculusThe third wide release of the week is the horror thriller Oculus directed by Mike Flanagan and stars Karen Gillan, Brenton Thwaites, Rory Cochrane, Annalise Basso and Katee Sackhoff. The film’s original music is composed by The Newton Brothers (DetachmentPawn Shop Chronicles). Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score, as well as two remixed by Paul Oakenfold. For the full album details, check out our previous news article. only-lovers-left-aliveOpening in limited release is the indie drama Only Lovers Left Alive directed by Jim Jarmusch and starring  Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska, John Hurt, Anton Yelchin and Jeffrey Wright.  The film’s original music is composed by Jozef Van Wissem & SQÜRL. ATP Records has released the movie’s official soundtrack album, which also features the song Hal by Yasmine Hamdan. railway-manOpening in Los Angeles and New York before expanding to other cities within the next few weeks is the drama The Railway Man directed by Jonathan Teplitzky and starring Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman, Jeremy Irvine, Stellan Skarsgård and Hiroyuki Sanada. David Hirschfelder (ElizabethAustraliaSanctum) has composed the film’s original music. Varese Sarabande will release a soundtrack featuring the composer’s score on May 13. The full album details will be published on this page soon. joeAlso opening in limited release is the indie drama Joe written and directed by David Gordon Green and starring Nicolas Cage, Tye Sheridan, Gary Poulter and Ronnie Gene Blevins. The film’s original music is composed by Jeff McIlwain and David Wingo (MudTake Shelter) who previously collaborated with the director on  films including Snow Angels and The Sitter. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the score, as well as two tracks by Explosions in the Sky and Ryan Bingham. Check out our soundtrack announcement for the full album details.

cuban-furyAlso opening in select cities is the romantic comedy Cuban Fury directed by James Griffiths and starring Nick Frost, Chris O’Dowd, Olivia Colman, Rashida Jones, Ian McShane, Rory Kinnear, and Alexandra Roach. Daniel Pemberton (The CounselorThe Awakening) has composed the film’s original score. Decca Records has released a soundtrack album featuring two tracks of the composer’s score, as well as the Latin jazz and salsa music from the film by such artists as Tito Puente, Sunlightsquare, Marc Anthony and Oscar D’Leon. hateship-loveshipOpening in New York before expanding to other cities within the next couple of weeks is the indie romantic drama Hateship Loveship directed by Liza Johnson and starring Kristen Wiig, Guy Pearce, Hailee Steinfeld and Nick Nolte. The film’s original music is composed by Dickon Hinchliffe (Out of the FurnaceLast Chance HarveyAt Any Price). No soundtrack album has been announced. Hateship Loveship follows a nanny who is set up romantically by the granddaughter of an old man she takes care of. The drama premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival and is being released by IFC Films both in theaters and on VOD. To learn more about the film, visit the official movie website.

perfect-sistersAnother limited release this weekend is the indie thriller Perfect Sisters directed by Stan Brooks and starring Abigail Breslin, Georgie Henley and Mira Sorvino. Grammy-nominated electronic musician and producer Carmen Rizzo has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been released yet, but visit Soundcloud to listen to samples of the composer’s score. Perfect Sisters is based on the notorious Toronto “Bathtub Girls” case and follows a pair of abused and neglected teenage girls who almost get away with murder. The thriller is being released by Gravitas Ventures.
