Film Music Reporter has learned that Henry Jackman has been hired to score the upcoming comic book adaptation X-Men: First Class. The project reunites Jackman with director Matthew Vaughn after their collaboration on Kick-Ass earlier this year (which the composer scored alongside John Murphy, Ilan Eshkeri and Marius DeVries). X-Men: First Class tells the origin story of the characters of the X-Men series including Magneto and Professor X. The movie is expected to start shooting soon for a June 3, 2011 release date. The film’s cast includes James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Kevin Bacon, Jennifer Lawrence and Rosamunde Pike. Jackman follows Michael Kamen, John Ottman, John Powell and Harry Gregson-Williams as the fifth composer scoring a movie in the X-Men series.

Anton Sanko has recently finished work on the score for the upcoming drama Rabbit Hole. He replaced composer Abel Korzeniowski who was originally signed on to score the movie (as reported earlier this year on this page). The movie directed by John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Shortbus) stars Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart. Film Music Reporter has learned that David Holmes has been hired to score the graphic novel adaptation Red. The movie is directed by Robert Schwentke (Flightplan, The Time Traveler’s Wife) and stars Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, Mary-Louise Parker, John Malkovich and Richard Dreyfuss. The movie centers around former black-ops agent Frank Mose, who reassembles his old team in a last ditch effort to survive when his idyllic life is threatened by a high-tech assassin. James Newton Howard has been hired to score the upcoming drama Water for Elephants. The movie marks Newton Howard’s second collaboration with director Francis Lawrence after the 2007 I Am Legend. Lawrence recently confirmed Newton Howard’s involvement on his Twitter account. In Water for Elephants, a veterinary student abandons his studies after his parents are killed and joins a traveling circus as their vet. The movie’s cast is lead by Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, Christoph Waltz and Hal Holbrook. The Fox 2000 movie is expected to be released in 2011.

Teddy Castellucci is currently finishing up the score for the comedy Lottery Ticket. The movie centers around a young man living in the projects who has to survive a three-day weekend after his opportunistic neighbors find out he’s holding a winning lottery ticket worth $370 million. The movie marks Erik White’s feature directorial debut and stars Ice Cube, Terry Crews, Mike Ebbs, Keith David, Bow Wow and Loretta Devine. John Debney has two new scoring assignments coming up. He will be scoring the thriller The Double, which marks screenwriter Michael Brandt’s (3:10 To Yuma, Wanted) directing debut. Topher Grace, Richard Gere, Stana Katic, Odette Yustman and Michael Sheen lead the film’s cast. The movie centers on a retired CIA operative who is paired with a young FBI agent to unravel the mystery of a senator’s murder, with all signs pointing to a Soviet assassin. Film Music Reporter has learned that Brian Reitzell has been hired to score the upcoming horror drama Red Riding Hood. The movie is directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight, The Nativity Story, Thirteen) and stars Amanda Seyfried. The movie is set in a medieval village that is haunted by a werewolf and where a young girl falls for an orphaned woodcutter, much to her family’s displeasure. Apart from composing the score, Reitzell will also write and produce the film’s songs and serve as the movie’s music supervisor. Jon Brion has been chosen to provide the original score for the upcoming action cop comedy The Other Guys starring Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Eva Mendes, Dwayne Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson. The movie is directed by Adam McKay, who used Brion on his last movie Step Brothers back in 2008. Ferrell and Wahlberg play two mismatched New York City detectives, who seize an opportunity to step up like the city’s top cops whom they idolize. The movie marks Brion’s first film scoring project in almost 2 years when scored both Step Brothers and Synecdoche, New York. Sony Pictures will release The Other Guys on August 6.

Michael Giacchino has been hired to score the upcoming horror romance Let Me In. In the movie, a bullied young boy befriends a young female vampire who lives in secrecy with her guardian. The movie is directed by Matt Reeves, who previously worked with Giacchino on Cloverfield. Let Me In is a remake of the Swedish vampire thriller Let The Right One In from 2008 and stars Chloe Moretz, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Richard Jenkins. Overture is set to release the movie on October 1. Ramin Djawadi has taken over scoring duties on the upcoming Red Dawn remake from Brian Tyler who was originally assigned to score the movie. In the movie directed by Dan Bradley, a group of teenagers look to save their town from an invasion of Chinese and Russian soldiers. The movie stars Chris Hemsworth, Adrienne Palicki and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. The MGM movie was originally scheduled to come out later this year, but according to recent reports, the movie has been put on an indefinite hold given the financial situation of the studio, but none of the reports have been confirmed.
