The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that composer David Newman is among this year’s first-time electees to serve the Academy’s Board of Governors. He joins composers Bruce Broughton and Charles Fox as a governor for the Academy’s music branch. Fourteen of the Academy’s 15 branches are represented by three governors, who may serve up to three consecutive three-year terms. Terms are staggered so that each branch elects or reelects one governor each year. This year’s other new board members include cinematographer Richard P. Crudo, producer Gale Anne Hurd and film editor Michael Tronick.

Dario Marianelli Scoring ‘Salmon Fishing in the Yemen’

Dario Marianelli has written the music for the upcoming comedy drama Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. The film based on the bestselling novel by Paul Torday is directed by Lasse Hallstrom (The Cider House Rules, Chocolat). Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire, The Full Monty, 127 Hours) has adapted the novel for the screen. The movie starring Emily Blunt, Ewan McGregor and Kristin Scott Thomas follows a fisheries scientist who is sent to introduce salmon to the Highlands of the Yemen. The project is produced by Paul Webster who has worked with the composer on Atonement and Pride & Prejudice. SoundWorks Collection has published a new profile on the sound and music of Pixar’s Cars 2, which is opening in theaters today. The profile includes interviews with composer Michael Giacchino, re-recording mixer and sound designer Tom Myers, and sound effects editor Al Nelson. Check out the full video after the jump. Fred Steiner Passes Away at 88

Fred Steiner has died at the age of 88. The composer was born on February 24, 1923 in New York. Best known for writing the piece Park Avenue Beat, which was used as the theme for the hit TV show Perry Mason, he also wrote music for such shows as Star Trek, The Twilight Zone, Gunsmoke, Hogan’s Heroes, Hotel, Lost in Space, Hawaii Five-O, Dynasty and Amazing Stories. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film The Color Purple as one of the composers credited for writing the music for the movie alongside lead composer Quincy Jones. ‘Tabloid’ Soundtrack announced

Milan Records has announced a soundtrack release for the documentary Tabloid. The album includes the film’s score by composer John Kusiak. The soundtrack will be released on July 12, 2011. Tabloid is directed by Errol Morris (The Fog of War, Standard Operating Procedure) and follows a former Miss Wyoming who is charged with abducting and imprisoning a young Mormon Missionary. Morris’ previous two feature documentaries were scored by Philip Glass and Danny Elfman. Nathaniel Mechaly Returns to Score ‘Taken 2’

According to Evolution Music Partners, Nathaniel Mechaly is set to return to score the upcoming action sequel Taken 2. Liam Neeson will be reprising his role as the retired government operative Bryan Mills from the Pierre Morel-directed 2008 hit film. Maggie Grace is set to reappear as Neeson’s daughter. The movie will be directed by Olivier Megaton (Transporter 3, Colombiana). Deadline has reported a few months ago that Luc Besson has teamed up with Robert Mark Kamen to write the project’s screenplay. David Schwartz to Score NBC’s ‘The Playboy Club’

David Schwartz has signed on to score the NBC drama The Playboy Club. The show is set against the background of the political and moral changes in the 1960s and follows the legendary Playboy Club in Chicago. Eddie Cibrian stars as a Chicago attorney who is also a keyholder at the glamorous club. The series is created by Chad Hodge (Tru Calling, Runaway) and Amber Heard, Leah Renee, Jenna Dewan, Laura Benanti, David Krumholtz, Naturi Naughton and Wes Ramsey are co-starring. Alan Taylor (The Emperor’s New Clothes, The Sopranos) has directed the pilot. Brian Grazer is among the show’s producers through his Imagine Television company (24, Friday Night Lights, Parenthood). David Buckley Scoring Joel Schumacher’s ‘Trespass’

David Buckley is the composer of the upcoming thriller Trespass. The movie is directed by Joel Schumacher (Falling Down, Phone Booth) and stars Nicolas Cage, Nicole Kidman, Ben Mendelsohn, Cam Gigandet and Liana Liberato. The film centers on a married couple taken hostage by four brutal perpetrators seeking easy cash. Complications ensue amid the unexpected discovery of betrayal and deception.
