‘Five’ to Feature Music by Lorne Balfe

Lorne Balfe has scored the Lifetime drama Five. The movie is an anthology of five short films exploring the impact of breast cancer on people’s lives. The drama highlights the shared experience each short film’s title character endures from the moment of diagnosis, through an interconnected story arc that uses humor and drama to focus on the effect breast cancer and its different stages of diagnosis. The five shorts are directed by by Jennifer Aniston, Alicia Keys, Demi Moore, Patty Jenkins (Monster) and Penelope Spheeris (Wayne’s World). Varese Sarabande has announced the latest batch of titles in the Varese CD Club series, including four new soundtrack releases. First up is the world premiere release of the original soundtrack recording of Midway. The album features the original score by John Williams. For audio clips and to order the CD, visit Varese Sarabande’s website. The album is limited to 3000 copies. Midway directed by Jack Smight starred Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, James Coburn, Glenn Ford, Hal Holbrook, Toshiro Mifune, Robert Mitchum, Cliff Robertson and Robert Wagner. Relativity Music Group will be releasing two soundtrack albums for the indie drama Like Crazy. The first soundtrack includes selections of the original score from the film by Dustin O’Halloran, as well as several songs by indie rock artists Paul Simon, The Mary Onettes, Figurine, Fool’s Gold, M83 and Stars. The score album features O’Halloran’s music including material not included on the other soundtrack. Both albums will be released on October 25, 2011. The song/score compilation is available to pre-order on Amazon and the score album can be pre-ordered here. Like Crazy is directed by Drake Doremus and stars Anton Yelchin, Felicity Jones and Jennifer Lawrence. Sony Music has announced a soundtrack album for Alexander Payne’s upcoming comedy drama The Descendants. The movie is scored exclusively with Hawaiian music, most of it created by masters of the genre, both modern and classical. Artists featured on the soundtrack include Gabby Pahinui, Ray Kane, Keola Beamer, Lena Machado, Sonny Chillingworth, Jeff Peterson, and Rev. Dennis Kamakahi. Relativity Music Group will be releasing the official soundtrack album for the action adventure movie Immortals. The album includes the original score by Trevor Morris. The soundtrack will be released on November 8, 2011 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. The enhanced CD also includes a featurette video with footage from the scoring stage with Morris and the film’s director Tarsem Singh. Lakeshore Records has announced a soundtrack album for the sci-fi thriller In Time. The album includes the original score by composer Craig Armstrong. The soundtrack will be released digitally on October 25, 2011. A physical release has been set for November 29 and the CD is available for pre-order on Amazon. In Time is directed by Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, Lord of War) and stars Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Olivia Wilde, Cillian Murphy and Alex Pettyfer. Two new movies are opening wide this weekend:

Expecting to top the weekend box office is the sci-fi action film Real Steel directed by Shawn Levy and starring Hugh Jackman, Kevin Durand, Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie and Hope Davis. The movie’s score is composed by Danny Elfman. A soundtrack album featuring his score will be released on November 1 by Varese Sarabande (click here for the details). A separate soundtrack featuring songs from the movie by artists including Bad Meets Evil, Beastie Boys and Foo Fighters, as well as one track from Elfman’s score has been released on Interscope Records. Also opening wide is the drama The Ides of March directed by George Clooney and starring Ryan Gosling, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Evan Rachel Wood, Marisa Tomei, Max Minghella and Jeffrey Wright. The film’s music is written by Alexandre Desplat. As reported on this page last month, Varese Sarabande has announced a score album to be released on November 1. Cliff Martinez is currently scoring the indie drama Arbitrage. The movie is directed by Nicholas Jarecki and stars Richard Gere as a troubled hedge fund magnate who is forced to turn to an unlikely ally when he makes an error. Tim Roth, Susan Sarandon, Laetitia Casta, Brit Marling and Josh Pais are co-starring in the drama produced by Laura Bickford (Duplicity), Robert Salerno (21 Grams), Kevin Turen (An American Crime) and Justin Nappi. Bickford has previously produced the Martinez-scored drama Traffic. No word yet on whether any music by J. Ralph who was originally announced as the composer of Arbitrage will remain in the movie. ‘Real Steel’ Score Album Details

Varese Sarabande has announced the details for the score album for the sci-fi action movie Real Steel. The soundtrack features 19 tracks of the score composed by Danny Elfman. The album will be released on November 1, 2011 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. A separate soundtrack featuring a number of songs from the movie and one score track by Elfman has been released earlier this week by Interscope Records (click here for more details and audio clips). Real Steel is directed by Shawn Levy and revolves around 2,000-pound robots that look like humans do battles. Clint Eastwood Scoring ‘J. Edgar’

Clint Eastwood has recently recorded his original music for his latest directorial effort J. Edgar. The orchestral score was recorded at the Eastwood Scoring Stage at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California. J. Edgar stars Leonardo DiCaprio as J. Edgar Hoover,  head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for nearly 50 years.  Naomi Watts, Armie Hammer, Judi Dench, Stephen Root, Josh Lucas, Dermot Mulroney and Jeffrey Donovan are co-starring.  The biopic is written by Dustin Lance Black (Milk). Brian Grazer (A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13) is producing with Eastwood and Robert Lorenz (Gran Torino, Changeling). Read the rest of this entry »
