Marcelo Zarvos has been hired to score the upcoming and currently untitled HBO movie about Phil Spector. The film is written and directed by David Mamet (Glengarry Glenn Ross, The Untouchables) and stars Al Pacino as Spector and Helen Mirren as his defense attorney Linda Kenney Baden. The movie explores the client-attorney relationship between the legendary music producer and his attorney who represented Spector during his first trial for the murder of Lana Clarkson. Jeffrey Tambor, James Tolkan and Martin Jarvis are co-starring. Michael Hausman (Recount, The People vs. Larry Flynt) is producing the project while Barry Levinson is executive producing alongside Pacino and Mamet.  Zarvos has previously collaborated with Levinson a number of times, most recently on the sci-fi horror thriller The Bay, which is still awaiting a release date. Music Box Records has announced a soundtrack release for last year’s film adaptation of La Nouvelle Guerre des Boutons (War of the Buttons). The album includes the original score from the movie composed by Philippe Rombi (Swimming Pool). For audio clips and to pre-order the album, visit the label’s website. La Nouvelle Guerre des Boutons is directed by Christophe Barratier (The Chorus, Paris 36) and stars Laeticia Casta, Kad Merad, Guillame Canet and Gerard Jugnot. The movie was released in France last fall. The Weinstein Company has reportedly been in negotiations to pick up domestic rights for a release in the US later this year. The soundtrack details of the score release for the upcoming movie adaptation of The Hunger Games have been revealed. The album includes almost 45 minutes of the original score from the movie composed by James Newton Howard. The soundtrack will be released on March 26, 2012 by Universal Republic and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Audio clips from all tracks on the release will be added to this article in the next couple of days. A separate soundtrack album featuring the film’s songs is also being released by the label as reported in our previous article. The Hunger Games directed by Gary Ross and starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Stanley Tucci, Elizabeth Banks and Woody Harrelson will be released on March 23, 2012 by Lionsgate. Watertower Music will be releasing the official soundtrack album for the romantic drama The Lucky One. The album includes the songs featured in the film. No word yet on whether any of Mark Isham’s original score from the film will be on the soundtrack. The album will be released on April 17, 2012. The Lucky One based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks is directed by Scott Hicks (Shine, Hearts in Atlantis) and stars Zac Efron, Taylor Schilling and Blythe Danner. The movie about a marine who survives three tours in Iraq and attributes his good fortune to a photograph he carried of a woman he has never met will be released in theaters on April 20. George Fenton is reuniting with director Ken Loach on the upcoming comedy drama The Angels’ Share. The film starring John Henshaw, William Ruane, Gary Maitland, Roger Allam,Paul Brannigan, Siobhan Reilly and Jasmin Riggins follows a new father who narrowly avoids a prison sentence and starts a whisky distillery. Frequent Loach collaborator Paul Laverty (The Wind That Shakes the Barley, Sweet Sixteen) has written the screenplay and Rebecca O’Brien (My Name is Joe) is producing the movie. The album includes the original score from the movie by Academy Award-nominated composer Javier Navarrete (Pan’s Labyrinth). Wrath of the Titans is directed by Jonathan Liebesman and stars Sam Worthington who is reprising his turn as Perseus from the 2010 box office hit Clash of the Titans. Three new movies are opening wide this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the fantasy epic John Carter directed by Andrew Stanton and starring Taylor Kitsch, Willem Dafoe, Lynn Collins, Thomas Haden Church, Samantha Morton, Dominic West, Mark Strong, James Purefoy and Bryan Cranston. The film’s music is composed by Michael Giacchino. Walt Disney Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Also opening wide is the family comedy A Thousand Words directed by Brian Robbins and starring Eddie Murphy, Ariel Winter, Kerry Washington and Allison Janney. John Debney who previously worked with the director on the sci-fi comedy Meet Dave has written the score for the movie. No soundtrack album has been announced. Rachel Portman is currently writing the music for the upcoming British drama Private Peaceful. The film is directed by Pat O’Connor and stars Jack O’Connell, George Mackay, Alexander Roach, Richard Griffiths and Frances de la Tour. The movie set in the fields of Devon and the WWI battlefields of Flanders is based on a novel by Michael Morpurgo (War Horse) and tells the story of two brothers who fall in love with the same girl. Simon Reade adapted the material for the screen and is also producing the film with Guy de Beaujeu. No word yet on whether any music by Mark Knopfler who was announced as the film’s composers by various news outlets last years will still be featured in the film. SMART will be releasing a soundtrack album for the French comedy 30° couleur. The album includes the original score from the movie composed by Klaus Badelt (Pirates of the Caribbean, The Time Machine), as well as the song Eye Abada by Asa. The soundtrack will be released digitally in France on March 12, 2012. No word yet on a domestic release. Jeff Rona is scoring the upcoming Cold War-set submarine thriller Phantom. The movie is written and directed by Todd Robinson (Lonely Hearts) and stars Ed Harris, David Duchovny, William Fichtner, Sean Patrick Flanery and Lance Henriksen. The movie revolves around a Captain of a Soviet submarine who has to leave his pregnant wife for a secret mission on which he is forced to face his past in order to find redemption in the present while being challenged by a rogue KGB group. John Watson & Pen Densham (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Backdraft) amd Julian Adams are producing the project. Robinson has previously written the screenplay for Ridley Scott’s White Squall, which marked Rona’s first major studio feature scoring assignment. Read the rest of this entry »
