Joseph Trapanese has signed on to score Walt Disney Pictures’ live-action adventure Echo. The film marks the feature directorial debut of Dave Green who is best known for helming numerous commercials and music videos, as well as comedic short films, including Pinkberry the Movie. The movie has been described as a “wolf adventure”, but no specific plot details have been revealed yet. The film’s cast includes Teo Halm, Astro and Reese C. Hartwig. Henry Gayden wrote the screenplay and Andrew Panay (Wedding Crashers, When in Rome, Van Wilder) is producing the project. Echo marks Trapanese’s first major studio feature assignment on his own. He previously co-scored this year’s Oblivion with Anthony Gonzalez of M83 for Universal Pictures and also collaborated with Daft Punk on Disney’s TRON: Legacy. Read the rest of this entry »

Paramount Pictures has published a short video featurette on the music for J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness. The video features an interview with Academy Award-winning composer Michael Giacchino (Up, Lost), as well as footage from the score’s recording sessions earlier this year. SCL Selects Ashley Irwin as New President

The board of the Society of Composers & Lyricists (SCL) unanimously elected Emmy-winning composer Ashley Irwin as President for the 2013-2015 term. The Australian composer has been a board member since 2008 and has served on the Performing Rights Committee and as the Chairman of the Seminar Committee for the last four years. He succeeds TV composer Dan Foliart (7th Heaven, The Secret Life of the American Teenager) in the office who is stepping down after 10 years of service. Irwin is best known for his collaborations with Bill Conti on numerous Oscar shows and such features as Rocky Balboa, as well as his work with Clint Eastwood on films including J. ‘Frances Ha’ Soundtrack Details

ABKCO Records will release a soundtrack album for Noah Baumbach’s indie comedy drama Frances Ha. The album features the music from the film, including four tracks from classic film scores by composer Georges Delerue, Paul McCartney’s Blue Sway, David Bowie’s Modern Love, T. Rex’s Chrome Sitar and more. The soundtrack will be released digitally on May 28, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Frances Ha co-written and directed by Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale, Greenberg) stars Greta Gerwig as an apprentice for a dance company and follows her character as she opens her heart to love. The New York-set comedy drama premiered at last year’s Telluride Film Festival and has been picked up by IFC Films for domestic distribution. Mark Isham is scoring the upcoming action thriller Homefront. The movie is directed by Gary Fleder (Runaway Jury) and stars Jason Statham, James Franco, Frank Grillo, Winona Ryder, Izabela Vidovic and Kate Bosworth. The film follows an ex-DEA agent who moves his family to a quiet town hoping to escape his past and finds the town to be overrun with violence, drug traffickers and an evil meth magnate. Sylvester Stallone wrote the screenplay and is also producing the Millennium Films production with Kevin King Templeton (The Expendables, Rocky Balboa, Rambo) and Rene Besson (Drive Angry, The Mechanic). Avi Lerner and Trevor Short are executive producing the project. The composer has also previously collaborated with Fleder on such films as Kiss the Girls, Don’t Say a Word and The Express. The details of the soundtrack album for Pixar’s animated feature Monsters University have been revealed. The album features the film’s original score by Academy Award-winning composer Randy Newman who has previously scored Pixar’s Monsters, Inc., as well as all three Toy Story films, A Bug’s Life and Cars. Also included is a track from Axwell & Sebastian Ingrosso of the electronic music trio Swedish House Mafia. Michael Giacchino to Score ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’

Michael Giacchino confirmed on Twitter that he will be scoring the upcoming sci-fi sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. The film is directed by Matt Reeves who previously collaborated with the composer on Let Me In and Cloverfield. The sequel stars Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Kodi-Smit McPhee, Keri Russell and Gary Oldman. While no specific plot details have been revealed yet, the film is said to be set 15 years after the events of the 2011 film and follows Caesar who is trying to maintain dominance over his kingdom, and the scientists struggling to survive in San Francisco. Peter Chernin & Dylan Clarke (Oblivion, The Heat) and screenwrites Amanda Silver & Rick Jaffa are producing the project. The original 2011 film featured a score by Patrick Doyle. Danny Elfman has been tapped to score the upcoming documentary The Unknown Known: The Life and Times of Donald Rumsfeld. The film is directed by Errol Morris (The Fog of War, Tabloid) and draws on hours of filmed interviews and previously unpublished material from Rumsfeld’s private archive and looks at the former United States Secretary of Defense’s role in American history from Watergate to 9/11. Robert Fernandez and Amanda Branson Gill are producing the project for Moxie Pictures. On Saturday night, film music label Varèse Sarabande hosted their 35th Anniversary Concert Gala at the Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro, California. The sold out concert was hosted and produced by Varese Sarabande’s Robert Townson and performed by the Golden State Pops Orchestra (GSPO) and Chorale. The event featured a special guest performance by Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer who performed a suite from Driving Miss Daisy on piano featuring Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger and violinist Ann Marie Calhoun. The suite also included a preview from the composer’s score for the upcoming Superman reboot Man of Steel. Additionally, Academy Award-winner Michael Giacchino (Up) conducted the world premiere of a special suite from his score for Star Trek Into Darkness and John Powell (The Bourne Trilogy) conducted a suite from his Oscar-nominated score for Dreamworks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon.
