mychael-dannaMychael Danna was chosen as Film Composer of the Year at the World Soundtrack Awards 2013, tonight’s closing event of the 40th Ghent Film Festival. Danna also received an award for his score for Ang Lee’s Life of Pi in the Best Original Film Score of the Year 2012 category. The composer accepted his awards via a video message. In the Discovery of the Year category, Benh Zeitlin and Dan Romer were awarded for their score for the indie drama Beasts of the Southern Wild, which Zeitlin also directed. In the Best Original Song written directly for a Film category, Adele and Paul Epworth received the honor for the title song for Sam Mendes’ James Bond film Skyfall. For the first time since 2002, both score and song awards matched the outcome of the respective categories at the Academy Awards.

book-thiefSony Classical will release a soundtrack album for the period drama The Book Thief. The album features the film’s original music composed by John Williams. The soundtrack will be released on November 19, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Audio clips are available after the jump. The Book Thief is directed by Brian Percival and stars Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson and Sophie Nelisse. The movie is based on the selling-novel by Markus Zusack and tells the story of a spirited and courageous young girl who transforms the lives of everyone around her when she is sent to live with a new family in World War II Germany.  The drama will be released on November 15 by 20th Century Fox. Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the horror thriller Carrie carriedirected by Kimberly Peirce and starring Chloë Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Judy Greer, Portia Doubleday, Gabriella Wilde, Alex Russell and Ansel Elgort. Columbia Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film by artists including Rogue Wave, Vampire Weekend, Passion Pit, The Naked and Famous and The Civil Wars. Check our our previous article for the full details. The movie’s original score is composed by Marco Beltrami (I, Robot, Live Free or Die Hard, The Wolverine). the-fifth-estateAlso opening wide this week is the WikiLeaks drama The Fifth Estate directed by Bill Condon and starringBenedict Cumberbatch, Daniel Brühl, Laura Linney, Anthony Mackie, Stanley Tucci, David Thewlis, Peter Capaldi, Dan Stevens, Alicia Vikander and Carice van Houten. The film’s original score is composed by Carter Burwell (Fargo, Twilight, Being John Malkovich). Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the songs from the film by Amon Tobin, Yppah, Tame Impala and Emika. 12-years-a-slaveThe details of the soundtrack album for Steve McQueen’s historical drama 12 Years a Slave have been announced. The album features selections from the film’s original score composed by Hans Zimmer, as well as original recordings from John Legend (who serves as the soundtrack’s producer), Alicia Keys (who performs Queen of the Field (Patsey’s Song) and Alabama Shakes (performing  Driva Man). Also included on the release is the track Roll Jordan Roll performed by the film’s cast. Other songs featured on the album Freight Train by Gary Clark Jr. and Misery Chain performed by Chris Cornell and The Civil Wars’ Joy Williams. Also featured are the film’s waltzes, spirituals and field songs composed and arranged by Nicholas Britell. The soundtrack will be released digitally on November 5, 2013 by Columbia Records. A physical version will be released one week later and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Audio clips will be added to this article within the next couple of weeks. 12 Years a Slave starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Paul Giamatti, Lupita Nyong’o, Sarah Paulson, Brad Pitt and Alfre Woodard is being released in select theaters today, October 18 and will expand to more cities within the next couple of weeks. ‘Carrie’ Score Album Released

carrieSony Classical has released a score album for the horror thriller remake Carrie. The album features the film’s original music composed by Marco Beltrami (Scream, World War Z, 3:10 to Yuma). The soundtrack is now available to download on Amazon. Check out audio clips after the jump. As previously announced, Columbia Records has also released a separate soundtrack featuring the songs from the film. Carrie based on Stephen King’s classic horror story is directed by Kimberly Peirce and stars Chloë Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Judy Greer, Portia Doubleday, Alex Russell, Gabriella Wilde and Ansel Elgort. The movie follows a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom. The album features the movie’s original score composed by Brian Tyler (Iron Man 3, Fast  Five, Now You See Me). The soundtrack will be released digitally overseas on October 28, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon, where you can also check out audio clips. Intrada Records will release the album physically on November 12. Thor: The Dark World is directed by Alan Taylor and stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Christopher Eccleston, Kat Dennings,  Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ray Stevenson, Zachary Levi, Jaimie Alexander, Tadanobu Asano, Rene Russo and Anthony Hopkins. The movie takes place in the aftermath of The Avengers and follows Thor as he battles to save all the Nine Realms from a mysterious enemy older than the universe itself. 22-jump-streetMark Mothersbaugh has signed on to score the upcoming comedy sequel 22 Jump Street. The film is once again directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and stars Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill & Ice Cube who reprise their roles from the 2012 original film. They are joined by new cast members Craig Roberts, Amber Stevens and Wyatt Russell. The movie follows officers Schmidt and Jenko as they go deep undercover at a local college pretending to be college students. Michael Bacall (Project X, Scott Pilgrim vs the World) and Oren Uziel have written the screenplay. Tatum and Hill are also producing the project with Neal H. Moritz (The Fast and the Furious series, I Am Legend). Mothersbaugh previously scored the original film, which went on to gross more than $200 Mio. at the worldwide box office in 2012. ‘Free Birds’ Soundtrack Details

free-birdsRelativity Music Group will release the official soundtrack album for the animated feature Free Birds. The album features the film’s original music composed by Dominic Lewis. Also included are two original songs recorded for the film, including a cover of Creedence Clearwater’s Up Around the Bend by Social Distortion and Back in Time by MattyBRaps. The soundtrack will be released digitally on October 28, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. The album will be released overseas by Sony Classical. Free Birds is directed by Jimmy Hayward (Horton Hears a Who!) and features the voice talent of Woody Harrelson, Owen Wilson, Amy Poehler, Dan Fogler, Lesley Nicol, George Takei, Colm Meaney and Keith David. The movie follows two turkeys from opposite sides of the tracks who must put aside their differences and team up to travel back in time to change the course of history. beauty-and-the-beastPierre Adenot is composing the score for Christophe Gans’ upcoming film adaptation of Beauty and the Beast (La Belle et la Bete). The French language film stars Vincent Cassel and Lea Seydoux. Gans has also written the screenplay based on one of the earliest published variants of the classic fairy tale, included in Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve’s 1740′s collection Jeune Ameriquaine et les Contes Marins. André Dussollier is co-starring. Richard Grandpierre (Brotherhood of the Wolf, Zulu) is producing the project for Eskwad, along Pathe Production. Diana is directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel and stars Naomi Watts as Princess Diana and centers on the last two years of her life and the secret love affair she had with Dr. Hasnat Khan, played by Naveen Andrews.
