Theo Green has recently co-scored the upcoming drama The Gambler. The film is directed by Rupert Wyatt (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) and stars Mark Wahlberg, John Goodman, Brie Larson, Michael K. Williams and Jessica Lange. The movie based on the 1974 film of the same title starring James Caan follows a college professor who gets caught up in the dangerous world of high-stakes underground gambling. William Monahan (The Departed) has written the screenplay. Relativity Music Group will release a soundtrack album for the drama Beyond the Lights. The album features the original song Grateful written by Academy Award-nominated songwriter Dianne Warren and performed by Rita Ora. Also included are the other songs from the film by such artists as Mavado feat. Nicki Minaj, Noni feat. Kid Culprit, Birdy, Yuna, India Jean-Jacques, Stacy Barthe & more. Cristal Records will release a soundtrack album for Francois Ozon’s French drama The New Girlfriend (Une nouvelle amie). The album features the film’s original music composed by Phillipe Rombi who previously collaborated with the director on such films as Swimming Pool, Angel, Potiche and In the House. The soundtrack will be released overseas on November 3, 2014. The New Girlfriend is written and directed by Ozon and stars Romain Duris, Anaïs Demoustier and Raphaël Personnaz. The movie centers on a young woman who makes a surprising discovery about the husband of her late best friend. Alexandre Desplat Named Film Composer of the Year at World Soundtrack Awards 2014

Alexandre Desplat was chosen as Film Composer of the Year 2014 at the World Soundtrack Awards 2012, tonight’s closing event of the 41st Ghent Film Festival. Desplat also received an award for his score for Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel in the Best Original Film Score of the Year category. Desplat also composed the music for such films as Gareth Edward’s Godzilla, George Clooney’s The Monuments Men and Stephen Frears’ Philomena over the past year. The composer previously was named Film Composer of the Year in 2007, 2009 and 2011. In the Discovery of the Year category, Daniel Pemberton was awarded for his work over the last year, which included his scores for Ridley Scott’s The Counselor and the comedy Cuban Fury. NBC announced today that Matthew Sklar and Christopher Guardino are composing the score for the upcoming NBC holiday event Elf: Buddy’s Musical Christmas. The stop-motion animated special is directed by Mark Caballero & Seamus Walsh and features the voice talent of Jim Parsons, Mark Hamill, Ed Asner, Fred Armisen, Jay Leno, Matt Lauer, Rachael MacFarlane, Max Charles, Gilbert Gottfried, Kate Micucci and Steve Higgins. The hour-long special is based on Jon Favreau’s hit 2003 hit film starring Will Ferrell and the Broadway show Elf: The Musical and tells the story of Buddy’s travels to New York City to meet the father he never knew he had. Lakeshore Records has announced a second soundtrack album for the indie drama White Bird in a Blizzard. The release features the songs from the film by Depeche Mode, Talk Talk, Tears For Fears, Pet Shop Boys, Cocteau Twins and Harold Budd, Psychedelic Furs, New Order, Echo and The Bunnymen, Love and Rockets, Everything But The Girl, Soft Cell, The Jesus and Mary Chain and Ulrich Schnauss. The soundtrack will be released digitally on November 11, 2014 and physically on December 12. As previously reported, the label has also released a separate soundtrack featuring the film’s original score composed by Robin Guthrie and Harold Budd.
