Tom Holkenborg (aka Junkie XL) has confirmed at a Reddit AMA today that he is reuniting with director Zack Snyder on the upcoming Netflix original film Army of the Dead. The film starring Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Ana de la Reguera, Theo Rossi, Chris D’Elia, Huma Qureshi, Garret Dillahunt, Raúl Castillo, Omari Hardwick, Hiroyuki Sanada and Matthias Schweighöfer takes place following a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, when a group of mercenaries take the ultimate gamble, venturing into the quarantine zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted. Snyder also co-wrote the screenplay with Joby Harold (King Arthur: Legend of the Sword) and Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum).

Paul Saunderson Scoring Daniel Graham’s ‘The Obscure Life of the Grand Duke of Corsica’
Paul Saunderson (Three Identical Strangers, Starfish, The More You Ignore Me, Strike Back) has composed the original score for the upcoming British comedy The Obscure Life of the Grand Duke of Corsica. The film is written and directed by Daniel Graham (Opus Zero) and stars Timothy Spall, Peter Stormare, Matt Hookings and Alicia Agneson. The movie follows a brilliant architect who embarks on an unusual commission in Malta for an eccentric billionaire who calls himself The Grand Duke of Corsica and must finish the job when a deadly virus is hitting the island.
Lorne Balfe to Return for Christopher McQuarrie’s ‘Mission: Impossible 7 & 8’
Director Christopher McQuarrie confirmed on the latest episode of the Light the Fuse podcast that Lorne Balfe will be returning as the composer for the next two installments in the Mission: Impossible series. Tom Cruise, Henry Czerny, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson and Vanessa Kirby are reprising their roles from the previous movies in the sequels, which will be written and directed by McQuarrie. They are joined by new cast members Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham and Nicholas Hoult.
Mark Mothersbaugh Scoring Mike Rianda’s ‘Connected’
Mark Mothersbaugh (Thor: Ragnarok, The Royal Tenenbaums, Hotel Transylvania) has been tapped to score the upcoming animated comedy Connected. The film is directed by Mike Rianda and features the voice talent of Abbi Jacobson, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Mike Rianda, Eric Andre and Olivia Colman. The animated comedy follows a a creative outsider who is accepted into the film school of her dreams. When she and her family drive to her school, their plans are interrupted by a tech uprising. Rianda also co-wrote the screenplay with co-director Jeff Rowe. Phil Lord & Christopher Miller are producing the Sony Pictures Animation production with Kurt Albrecht.
Erick Schroder Scoring Chris McGowan’s ‘Chasing Nightmares’
Erick Schroder (Astro, American Christmas, No Man’s Land) is composing the original music for the upcoming horror thriller Chasing Nightmares. The film is written and directed by Chris McGowan and stars Anne Heche, Graham McTavish, Michelle Randolph, Spencer Daniels, Aubrey Cleland, Jay Huguley and Dana Daurey. The movie follows a college student who risks her and her friends’ lives to track down the meaning behind the nightmares she has about a girl and a delusional masked man. David Brown is producing the project for Specter Pictures, alongside Todd Lundbohm for 828 Productions.
John Murphy to Score James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’
John Murphy (Sunshine, 28 Days Later…, Snatch, Kick-Ass) has been confirmed as the new composer of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. We previously reported earlier this week that Tyler Bates will be scoring the film based on information obtained several months ago. At that time, it was confirmed to us that Bates had written music prior to principal photography for use during the shoot (as he did for the Guardians of the Galaxy movies) and the composer was attached to score the movie, but Bates has departed the movie since. The Suicide Squad starring Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, David Dastmalchian, Idris Elba, Daniela Melchior, Steve Agee, John Cena, Storm Reid, Flula Borg, Nathan Fillion, Peter Capaldi, Pete Davidson and Michael Rooker will be released on August 6, 2021 by Warner Bros. Pictures.

The film is written and directed by James Gunn and stars Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman and Jai Courtney who reprise their roles from the 2016 original movie. They are joined by new cast members David Dastmalchian, Idris Elba, Daniela Melchior, Steve Agee, John Cena, Storm Reid, Flula Borg, Nathan Fillion, Peter Capaldi, Pete Davidson and Michael Rooker. Charles Roven (The Dark Knight, Wonder Woman, Man of Steel) is producing the project with Peter Safran (Aquaman, The Conjuring).
The Newton Brothers Scoring Austin Stark’s ‘The God Committee’
The Newton Brothers (The Haunting of Hill House, Doctor Sleep, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Life of Crime, Oculus) have recently scored the upcoming dramatic thriller The God Committee. The film is written and directed by Austin Stark and stars Kelsey Grammer, Julia Stiles, Colman Domingo, Janeane Garofalo and Dan Hedaya. The movie follows a group of accomplished doctors who serve on a heart transplant committee at a New York City hospital and have to decide which of three patients deserves a life-saving heart. Six years later, they face the dramatic repercussions of their fateful decision. Molly Conners (Manglehorn, Song One), Amanda Bowers (Like Father), Jonathan Rubenstein, Ari Pinchot, Jane Oster, Bingo Gubelmann & Benji Kohn (Detachment, Infinitely Polar Bear) are producing the project.
Keegan DeWitt Scoring Brett Haley’s ‘Sorta Like a Rockstar’
Composer Keegan DeWitt (Gemini, Divorce, Her Smell, Sorry for Your Loss) is reteaming with director Brett Haley on the upcoming Netflix original film Sorta Like a Rockstar. The movie stars Auli’i Cravalho, Carol Burnett, Fred Armisen, Rhenzy Feliz, Justina Machado, Judy Reyes, Gerald Isaac Waters, Taylor Richardson and Anthony Jacques. The drama is based on the novel of the same name by Matthew Quick (Silver Lining’s Playbook) novel by the same name and follows a teenage girl who, despite her difficult circumstances, is preternaturally optimistic about the world and her place in it, until she faces a devastating loss and can no longer ignore the challenges in her own life.
Weekly TV Music Roundup (May 3, 2020)
Premiering on Wednesday, May 6, is the Netflix documentary Becoming directed by Nadia Hallgren and produced by Katy Chevigny, Marilyn Ness & Lauren Cioffi about the life of former First Lady Michelle Obama as she embarks on a 34-city tour. The film’s original music is composed by jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington. Premiering on Friday, May 8, is the Netflix limited series The Eddy created by Jack Thorne and starring André Holland, Joanna Kulig, Amandla Stenberg, Leila Bekhti and Tahar Rahim. Glen Ballard (The Polar Express) and Randy Kerber (The Color Purple) have composed the show’s original music. Arista Records will release a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ songs from the drama on Friday.
