Variety is reporting that Laura Karpman (Lovecraft Country, Set It Up, Step, Paris Can Wait, Why We Hate, Underground) has signed on to score Marvel Studios’ upcoming Captain Marvel sequel The Marvels. The film is directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman, Little Woods) and stars Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, as well as Zawe Ashton. No plot details have been announced yet. Megan McDonnell wrote the screenplay.

Aska Matsumiya Scoring Amy Berg’s ‘Phoenix Rising’
Earlier this month, Aska Matsumiya (Skate Kitchen, Bruised, I’m Your Woman, Betty, Selah and the Spades) has recorded her score for the upcoming documentary Phoenix Rising. The film is directed by Amy Berg (Deliver Us from Evil, West of Memphis, The Case Against Adnan Syed) and follows actress and activist Evan Rachel Wood and the coalition she builds at The Phoenix Act, tracking the political and community focus the actor has established in the aftermath of her experience and trauma as a domestic violence survivor. Berg is also producing the project with Grace Sin, Lesley Goldman and Katie Doering.
Tyler Bates & Chelsea Wolfe Scoring Ti West’s ‘X’
Tyler Bates (Guardians of the Galaxy, Deadpool 2, 300, Watchmen, John Wick, The Punisher) has teamed up with singer/songwriter Chelsea Wolfe to score the upcoming horror movie X. The film is written and directed by Ti West (The House of the Devil, In a Valley of Violence) and stars Mia Goth, Jenna Ortega, Martin Henderson, Brittany Snow, Owen Campbell, Stephen Ure and Scott Mescudi. The movie follows a film crew who arrives at a secluded farmhouse in Texas to shoot an adult film, when their hosts take a special interest in their young guests.
Simon Franglen Scoring Jean-Jacques Annaud’s ‘Notre-Dame on Fire’
Simon Franglen (The Magnificent Seven, Pandora: The World of Avatar, Peppermint) has composed the original score for the upcoming French drama Notre-Dame on Fire (Notre-Dame brûle). The film is directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud (The Name of the Rose, Seven Years in Tibet) and stars Samuel Labarthe, Mikael Chirinian, Jean-Paul Bordes, Chloé Jouannet, Jérémie Laheurte and Pierre Lottin. The movie centers on the events that took place on April 15, 2019, when the cathedral suffered the biggest blaze in its history and retraces how heroic men and women put their lives on the line to accomplish an awe-inspiring rescue.

Caroline Shaw has recently scored the upcoming drama The Sky Is Everywhere. The film is directed by Josephine Decker (Shirley) and stars Grace Kaufman, Pico Alexander, Jacques Colimon, Cherry Jones and Jason Segel. The movie is based on the YA novel of the same title by Jandy Nelson and revolves around a radiant musical prodigy who tries to keep things together in the aftermath of her older sister’s death when a charismatic new guy at school enters her life. The movie is directed by Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire & Mockingjay, I Am Legend) and stars Jason Momoa, Kyle Chandler, Chris O’Dowd, Marlow Barkley, Weruche Opia and India de Beaufort. The fantasy adventure is inspired by the comic book strip Little Nemo in Slumberland by Winsor McCay and revolves around a young girl who discovers a secret map to the dreamworld of Slumberland and traverses through dreams and flees nightmares, with the hope to see her late father again.
