Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the fantasy adventure Maleficent: Mistress of Evil directed by Joachim Rønning and starring Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Michelle Pfeiffer, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sam Riley, Ed Skrein, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville. The film’s original music is composed Geoff Zanelli (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Disturbia, Christopher Robin). Walt Disney Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as an original song performed by Bebe Rexha. Click here for the full album details.
Also opening wide is the horror comedy Zombieland: Double Tap directed by Ruben Fleischer and starring Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin, Rosario Dawson, Zoey Deutch and Luke Wilson. David Sardy (21, End of Watch, Bright, Premium Rush) who has composed the music for the 2009 original movie has composed the sequel’s original score. Sony Classical has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, as well as song performed by Harrelson today. Check out our previous article for the full album details.
Opening in limited release is the World War II satire Jojo Rabbit directed by directed by Taika Waititi and starring Roman Griffin Davis, Thomasin McKenzie, Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell, Rebel Wilson, Alfie Allen and Stephen Merchant. The film’s original music is composed by Michael Giacchino (Up, Lost, Jurassic World, The Incredibles, Star Trek). Hollywood Records has released two soundtracks, including an album featuring the songs from the movie by The Beatles, David Bowie, Tom Waits & others (click here for the full details) and and album featuring Giacchino’s score (click here for more information).
Also opening in limited release is the horror thriller The Lighthouse co-written and directed by Robert Eggers and starring Robert Pattinson, Willem Dafoe and Valeriia Karaman. Mark Korven (Cube, The Terror: Infamy, In the Tall Grass, Our House) who has previously scored Eggers’ The Witch has composed the film’s original music. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score and Sacred Bones Records will release a vinyl edition soon. Also opening in select theaters before premiering on Apple TV+ on November 1 is the documentary The Elephant Queen directed by Mark Deeble & Victoria Stone and narrated by Chiwetel Ejiofor. The film’s original music is composed by Alex Heffes (The Last King of Scotland, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, State of Play, Queen of Katwe, 11.22.63, Miss Bala). A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score will be announced soon. The documentary is being released theatrically by A24.
Also opening in select U.S. cities is the French drama By the Grace of God (Grâce à Dieu) written and directed by Francois Ozon and starring Melvil Poupaud, Denis Ménochet, Swann Arlaud, Éric Caravaca and François Marthouret. Evgueni & Sacha Galperine (Loveless, The Family, The Wizard of Lies, Madame Bovary) have composed the film’s original music. Music Box Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score earlier this year when the movie opened overseas. Another limited release this week is the indie drama Miss Virginia directed by R. J. Daniel Hanna and starring Uzo Aduba, Matthew Modine, Aunjanue Ellis, Niles Fitch, Nadji Jeter, Adina Porter and Vanessa Williams. The film’s original music is composed by Laura Karpman (Underground, Step, Set It Up, Taken, Black Nativity). No word on a soundtrack release. Also opening in select U.S. theaters is the French/Belgian historical comedy drama Cyrano, My Love (Edmond) written and directed by Alexis Michalik and starring Thomas Solivérès, Olivier Gourmet, Mathilde Seigner and Tom Leeb. Romain Trouillet (Sauvage) has composed the film’s original music. Gaumont and Légende Films have released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score earlier this year when the movie opened overseas. Also opening in limited release is the horror thriller Trick co-written and directed by Patrick Lussier and starring Omar Epps, Ellen Adair, Kristina Reyes, Jamie Kennedy and Tom Atkins. The film’s original music is composed by Michael Wandmacher (Piranha 3D, My Bloody Valentine 3D, Drive Angry, The Goldbergs). No word on a soundtrack release. The movie, which follows a no-nonsense detective who tries to track down a mass murderer who is terrorizing a small town, is being released in theaters and on VOD by RLJE Films.
Opening in select theaters while also premiering on Netflix today is the documentary Tell Me Who I Am directed by Ed Perkins. Danny Bensi & Saunder Jurriaans (Boy Erased, Ozark, The Gift, Fear the Walking Dead, Enemy, American Gods) have composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been released. The movie, which tells the story of twin brothers Alex and Marcus Lewis’ and their abusive family history, is now available to stream on Netflix.
