THR is reporting that the music branch of the Academy Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has ruled the original score for Peter Farrelly’s comedy drama Green Book ineligible in the Best Original Score category for next year’s Academy Awards. The Academy is citing its rule that states that a score “shall not be eligible if it has been diluted by the use of pre-existing music, or it has been diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs or any music not composed specifically for the film by the submitting composer”. Kris Bowers (Dear White People, For the People) has composed the score for the film, which features several musical performances by the The Don Shirley Trio (led by Mahershala Ali who portrays pianist Shirley in the movie), as well some period songs. The composer’s score and other music from the dramedy has been released by Milan Records.
The Academy has previously disqualified several scores based on the same rule, including (in recent years)Birdman (by Antonio Sanchez) and Arrival (by Johann Johannsson). With Green Book out as possible contender (which we had ranked as No. 10 in our prediction list) in the score category, we have updated our predictions in the left column on this page with Marco Beltrami’s score for A Quiet Place being added to our list thanks to the publicity boost it received through its Golden Globe nomination today.
