Two new movies are opening wide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the sci-fi action thriller Edge of Tomorrow
directed by Doug Liman and starring Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton, Charlotte Riley, Jonas Armstrong and Franz Drameh. The film’s original music is composed by Christophe Beck (Frozen, The Muppets, Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Also opening wide is the romantic drama The Fault in Our Stars directed by Josh Boone and starring Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort, Laura Dern, Sam Trammell, Nat Wolff and Willem Dafoe. Atlantic Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film by artists including Ed Sheeran, Birdy, Grouplove, M83, Kodaline, Jake Bugg and more. Opening in limited release is the indie comedy Obvious Child co-written and directed by Gillian Robespierre and starring Jenny Slate, Jake Lacy, Gaby Hoffmann, David Cross, Gabe Liedman and Richard Kind. Chris Bordeaux has composed the film’s original score. No word yet on a soundtrack release. Obvious Child follows a Brooklyn comedian who gets dumped, fired and pregnant just in time for the most chaotic Valentine’s Day of her life. The comedy premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and was picked up by A24 Films for domestic distribution. To learn more about the film, visit the official movie website.
Also opening in limited release is the horror thriller The Sacrament written and directed by Ti West and starring Joe Swanberg, Amy Selmetz, AJ Bowen, Kate Lyn Shell, Gene Jones and Kentucker Audley. The film’s original music is composed by Tyler Bates (Watchmen, 300, Dawn of the Dead, Californication). Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score combined with pieces of dialogue and soundscapes of Graham Reznick. Also opening in select cities is the thriller Anna directed by Jorge Dorado, produced by Jaume Collet-Serra and starring Mark Strong, Tassia Farminga and Brian Cox. The film’s original music is composed by Lucas Vidal (Fast & Furious 6, The Raven, The Quiet Ones). No soundtrack album has been announced yet. Anna, which was originally entitled Mindscape, follows a man who can enter peoples’ memories and who takes on the case of a teenage girl to determine whether she is a sociopath or a trauma victim. The thriller is being released in the U.S. by Vertical Entertainment and is now also available on VOD.
Another limited release this weekend is the indie coming-of-age comedy Ping Pong Summer written and directed by Michael Tully and starring Susan Sarandon, Lea Thompson, John Hannah, Amy Sedaris and Marcello Conte. Michael Montes has composed the film’s original music. J-2 Music has released a soundtrack featuring a suite from the composer’s score, as well as songs from the film by such artists as The Fat Boys, Mary Jane Girls, New Edition, Whodini, Midnight Star and Angelo Jannotti. Also opening in select markets is the documentary The Case Against 8 directed by Ben Cotner and Ryan White. The film’s original music is composed by Blake Neely (Arrow, The Mentalist, Everwood, The Pacific). The movie centers on the Landmark Supreme Court case that overturned Proposition 8, California’s ban on same-sex marriage. Also opening in limited release is the indie fantasy drama I’ll Follow You Down written and directed by Richie Mehta and starring Haley Joel Osment, Gillian Anderson, Rufus Sewell and Victor Garber. Andrew Lockington (Journey to the Center of the Earth, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters) has composed the film’s original music. Another limited release this weekend is the indie comedy Trust Me written and directed by Clark Gregg who also stars in the film alongside Felicity Huffman, Allison Janney, William H. Macy, Niecy Nash, Amanda Peet, Sam Rockwell, Molly Shannon, Saxon Sharbino and Paul Sparks. The film’s original score is composed by Mark Kilian (Tsotsi, Traitor, Rendition, Pitch Perfect). No word yet on a soundtrack release. Trust Me follows a down-on-his-luck talent agent who is determined to achieve Hollywood success with a 13-year-old star he has discovered. The film premiered at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival and was picked up by Starz Digital Media for domestic distribution.
