Three new movies are opening in theaters nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the biographical drama First Man directed by Damien Chazelle and starring Ryan Gosling, Claire Foy, Jason Clarke, Kyle Chandler, Corey Stoll, Ciarán Hinds, Christopher Abbott, Patrick Fugit and Lukas Haas. The film’s original music is composed by Justin Hurwitz (La La Land,Whiplash). Back Lot Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score today. Also opening nationwide is the mystery thriller Bad Times at the El Royale written and directed by Drew Goddard and starring Jeff Bridges, Cynthia Erivo, Dakota Johnson, Jon Hamm, Cailee Spaeny, Lewis Pullman, Nick Offerman and Chris Hemsworth. Michael Giacchino (Up, Lost, Jurassic World, The Incredibles, Star Trek) has composed the film’s original score. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music (click here for the full album details) and Republic Records has released a separate soundtrack featuring the songs from the movie (click here for more information).
Also opening wide is the family adventure Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween directed by Ari Sandel and starring Wendi McLendon-Covey, Madison Iseman, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Caleel Harris, Chris Parnell and Ken Jeong. The film’s original music is composed by Dominic Lewis (Peter Rabbit, Money Monster, The Man in the High Castle, DuckTales). Opening in limited release is the drama Beautiful Boy co-written and directed by Felix van Groeningen and starring Steve Carell, Timothée Chalamet, Maura Tierney and Amy Ryan. The movie doesn’t feature an original score. Warner Bros. Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film, including an original track by Sampha as well as songs by John Lennon, Massive Attack, Nirvana, David Bowie & more. Already playing in limited release since this past Wednesday is the biographical drama The Happy Prince directed by Rupert Everett who also stars in the movie with Colin Firth, Edwin Thomas, Colin Morgan, Emily Watson, Tom Wilkinson, Miranda Richardson, Beatrice Dalle and John Standing. Gabriel Yared (The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Cold Mountain, 1408) has composed the film’s original music. Also opening in limited release is the political comedy The Oath written and directed by Ike Barinholtz who also stars in the movie with Tiffany Haddish, Nora Dunn, Chris Ellis, Jon Barinholtz, Meredith Hagner, Carrie Brownstein, Billy Magnussen and John Cho. The film’s original score is composed by Bret Mazur. No word on a soundtrack release. The movie, which follows a man struggles to make it through the Thanksgiving holiday without destroying his family, is being released by Roadside Attractions. Also opening in select theaters is the biographical drama Bigger directed by George Gallo and starring Julianne Hough, Tyler Hoechlin, Calum Von Moger, Colton Haynes, Kevin Durand, Aneurin Barnard, Victoria Justice, DJ Qualls and Robert Forster. Jeff Beal (House of Cards, Rome, Monk, Carnivale, Pollock, Appaloosa) has composed the film’s original score. No soundtrack album has been announced yet. Also opening in select cities is the supernatural thriller I Still See You directed by Scott Speer and starring Bella Thorne, Richard Harmon, Amy Price-Francis, Hugh Dillon, Shaun Benson, Dave Brown, Thomas Elms, Louis Herthum and Dermot Mulroney. The film’s original music is composed by Bear McCreary (10 Cloverfield Lane, The Walking Dead, Outlander, Battlestar Galactica). Another limited release this week is the indie drama Sadie written and directed by Megan Griffiths and starring Sophia Mitri Schloss, Melanie Lynsky, John Gallagher. Jr, Danielle Brooks, Tony Hale and Keith L. Williams. Pear Jam’s Mike McCready has composed the film’s original score. No word on a soundtrack release. The movie, which tells the story of young girl who will stop at nothing to preserve her father’s place on the home front, premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival and is being self-distributed. Also opening in limited release is the psychological thriller Look Away written and directed by Assaf Bernstein and starring India Eisley, Mira Sorvino and Jason Isaacs. The film’s original music is composed by Mario Grigorov (Precious, The Paperboy, Shadowboxer, Flowers in the Attic). The movie, which tells the story of an alienated high-school student whose life is turned upside down when she switches places with her sinister mirror image, is being released in theaters and on VOD by Vertical Entertainment. Opening in select theaters while also premiering on Netflix today is the drama The Kindergarten Teacher written and directed by Sara Colangelo and starring Maggie Gyllenhaal, Parker Sevak and Gael García Bernal. Asher Goldschmidt (White God) has composed the film’s original score. The movie follows a devoted teacher who takes interest in a young student’s creative potential after hearing his poetry, but soon crosses the line into obsession. Visit Netflix to stream the drama.
Another Netflix original movie opening in select theaters today is the thriller Apostle written and directed by Gareth Evans and starring Dan Stevens, Lucy Boynton, Mark Lewis Jones, Bill Milner, Kristine Froseth, Paul Higgins and Michael Sheen. The film’s original music is composed by Fajar Yuskemal and Aria Prayogi (The Raid, The Raid 2). Already playing in select theaters and also streaming on Netflix since this past Wednesday is the drama 22 July written and directed by Paul Greengrass and starring Anders Danielsen Lie, Jon Øigarden and Jonas Strand Gravli. Sune Martin (Land of Mine, The Outsider) has composed the film’s original music. The movie, which tells the true story of a young survivor and grieving families as they rally for justice and healing after the terrorist attacks in Norway, is now available to stream on Netflix.
