Four new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the horror comedy Goosebumps directed by Rob Letterman and starring Jack Black, Dylan Minnette, Odeya Rush, Amy Ryan, Jillian Bell, Ryan Lee and Ken Marino. The film’s original music is composed by Danny Elfman (Spider-Man, Batman, Alice in Wonderland, Avengers: Age of Ultron). Sony Classical and Madison Gate Records have released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music. Also opening wide is the spy thriller Bridge of Spies directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance, Scott Shepherd, Amy Ryan, Sebastian Koch and Alan Alda. Thomas Newman (American Beauty, The Shawshank Redemption, Finding Nemo, Skyfall) has composed the film’s original music. Hollywood Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the Academy Award-nominated composer today. Also opening wide is the gothic romance Crimson Peak co-written and directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Hunnam and Jim Beaver. The film’s original music is composed by Fernando Velazquez (The Impossible, Hercules, Devil, The Orphanage) who previously scored the del Toro-produced Mama. Opening in around 1500 theaters is the faith-based sports drama Woodlawn directed by Jon & Andrew Erwin and starring Sean Astin, Nic Bishop, Caleb Castille, Sherri Shepherd, Jon Voight. Paul Mills (War Room, October Baby, Against the Sun) has composed the film’s original score. No word yet on a soundtrack release. Woodlawn is set in 1973 and centers around a spiritual awakening that captured the heart of nearly every player of the Woodlawn High School football team. Opening in limited release is the drama Room directed by Lenny Abrahamson and starring Brie Larson, Jacob Tremblay, William H. Macy and Joan Allen. The film’s original music is composed by Stephen Rennicks who previously scored Abrahmson’s Frank. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, as well as Brie Larson’s performance of Big Rock Candy Mountain and a song by This Will Destroy You. Also opening in limited release is the political drama Truth written and directed by James Vanderbilt and starring Cate Blanchett, Robert Redford, Topher Grace, Elisabeth Moss and Dennis Quaid. Brian Tyler (Furious 7, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Iron Man 3, Now You See Me) has composed the film’s original music. Varese Sarabande will release a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music within the next few weeks. Opening in select theaters while also premiering today on Netflix is the Beasts of No Nation is directed by Cary Fukunaga and starring Idris Elba, Ama K. Abebrese, Grace Nortey, David Dontoh and Opeyemi Fagbohungbe. The film’s original music is composed by Dan Romer (Beasts of the Southern Wild, Digging for Fire). Also opening in select cities is the indie drama Meadowland directed by Reed Morano and starring Olivia Wilde, Luke Wilson, Giovanni Ribisi, Elisabeth Moss, Ty Simpkins, John Leguizamo, Kevin Corrigan, Merritt Wever, Scott Mescudi and Skipp Suddith. Adam Taylor who previously composed additional music for August: Osage County has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been released. Meadowland centers on a couple dealing with their son’s disappearance. The drama premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival and is being released by Cinedigm.
Another limited release this week is the action thriller Momentum directed by Stephen Campanelli and starring Olga Kurylenko, James Purefoy, Lee-Ann Summers and Morgan Freeman. The film’s original music is composed by Laurent Eyquem (Copperhead, Winnie Mandela, Rage, The Red Tent). Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Also opening in limited release is the horror anthology film Tales of Halloween featuring a number shorts by well known horror film directors. The various segments of the film are scored by Joseph Bishara (The Conjuring), Christian Henson (The Devil’s Double), Austin Wintory (Journey), Christoper Drake (Tusk), Bobby Johnston (Mother’s Day), Edwin Wendler (Unnatural), Michael Sean Colin (Killjoy Goes to Hell), Jimmy Psycho (The Jimmy Psycho Experiment) and Sean Spillane (Jug Face). The movie also features a main titles theme by Lalo Schifrin (The Amityville Horror). Aleph Records will release a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ scores next week. Also opening in select theaters is the drama Experimenter written and directed by Michael Almereyda and starring Peter Sarsgaard, Winona Ryder, Kellan Lutz, Taryn Manning, John Leguizamo, Jim Gaffigan, Edoardo Ballerini, Dennis Hyasbert, Danny Abeckaser and Anton Yelchin. Bryan Senti has composed the film’s original music. No word on a soundtrack release. Experimenter takes pace in 1961 and centers on social psychologist Stanley Milgram who conducted a series of radical behavior experiments that tested ordinary humans willingness to obey authority. Another limited release this weeks is the sci-fi thriller The Diabolical directed by Alistar Legrand and starring Ali Larter, Arjun Gupta, Max Rose, Chloe Perrin, Kurt Carley, Merrin Dungey and Patrick Fischler. The film’s original music is composed by former Passion Pit member Ian Hultquist (Animals). Atlantic Screen Group has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score.
