Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the horror thriller Carrie directed by Kimberly Peirce and starring Chloë Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Judy Greer, Portia Doubleday, Gabriella Wilde, Alex Russell and Ansel Elgort. Columbia Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film by artists including Rogue Wave, Vampire Weekend, Passion Pit, The Naked and Famous and The Civil Wars. Check our our previous article for the full details. The movie’s original score is composed by Marco Beltrami (I, Robot, Live Free or Die Hard, The Wolverine). Also opening wide this week is the WikiLeaks drama The Fifth Estate directed by Bill Condon and starringBenedict Cumberbatch, Daniel Brühl, Laura Linney, Anthony Mackie, Stanley Tucci, David Thewlis, Peter Capaldi, Dan Stevens, Alicia Vikander and Carice van Houten. The film’s original score is composed by Carter Burwell (Fargo, Twilight, Being John Malkovich). Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the songs from the film by Amon Tobin, Yppah, Tame Impala and Emika. The third wide release of the week is the action thriller Escape Plan directed by Mikael Hafstrom and staring Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jim Caviezel, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Sam Neill, Vinnie Jones, Faran Tahir, Vincent D’Onofrio and Amy Ryan. Alex Heffes (Red Riding Hood, The Last King of Scotland) has composed the film’s original score. Opening in limited release is the historical drama 12 Years a Slave directed by Steve McQueen and starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Paul Giamatti, Lupita Nyong’o, Sarah Paulson, Brad Pitt and Alfre Woodard. Hans Zimmer has composed the film’s original score. Columbia Records will release a soundtrack album featuring selections from the composer’s score, as well as songs by John Legend, Alicia Keys, Alabama Shakes, Cary Clark Jr.. Also opening in limited release is the drama All Is Lost written and directed by J.C. Chandor and starring Robert Redford as a man who gets lost at sea and struggles against the elements to stay alive. Alexander, aka Alex Ebert of the indie rock band Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros has composed the film’s original music. Already in theaters since this past Wednesday is the indie drama Kill Your Darlings directed by John Krokidas and starring Daniel Radcliffe, Dane DeHaan, Michael C. Hall, Jack Huston, Ben Foster, David Cross, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Elizabeth Olsen. The film’s original score is composed by Nico Muhly (The Reader, Joshua, Margaret). No soundtrack album has been announced. Kill Your Darlings tells the story of murder that brought together a young Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs at Columbia University in 1944. The movie premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and was picked by Sony Pictures Classics for domestic distribution. To learn more about the drama, visit the official movie website.
Another limited release this week is the drama I’m in Love With a Church Girl directed by Steve Race and starring Jeff “Ja Rule” Atkins, Adrienne Bailon, Stephen Baldwin, Toby Mac, T-Bone, Michael Madsen, Vincent Pastore, Martin Kove and Michael Rivera. RCA Inspirational has released a soundtrack album featuring new songs by such artists as Donnie McClurkin, Marvin Sapp, James Fortune, Jason Nelson, Toby Mac, Lalah Hathaway and Anthony Hamilton. Also opening in select cities is the indie comedy Paradise written and directed by Diablo Cody and starring Julianne Hough, Russell Brand, Octavia Spencer, Holly Hunter and Nick Offerman. Academy Award-winning composer Rachel Portman (Emma, Chocolat, The Cider House Rules) has composed the film’s original score. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring Portman’s music, as well as the song Milky White Way performed by actress Julianne Hough.
