Trevor Morris to Score Oren Peli’s ‘The River’

Trevor Morris has been hired to score the upcoming TV drama pilot The River. The thriller/horror show centers on a family who travels to the deep Amazon to locate and rescue their missing father. The show’s cast includes Bruce Greenwood, Leslie Hope, Joe Anderson and Thomas Kretschmann. The River is created by the Paranormal Activity writer and director Oren Peli, who co-wrote the pilot with Michael Perry (Paranormal Activity 2). The show’s pilot marks the TV directing debut of Jaume Collet-Serra whose thriller Unknown starring Liam Neeson is currently in theaters. He also previously directed the features House of Wax and Orphan. The River is said to be shot in a cinema verite-style, akin to Peli’s Paranormal Activity. The show is produced by ABC Studios and DreamWorks’ TV division. It is expected that Morris will be scoring the show if it gets picked up by ABC for next TV season.

John Powell Confirmed to Score ‘The Lorax’

A press release from Universal Pictures has confirmed this week that John Powell is writing the music for the upcoming animated feature The Lorax. The film based on the book by Dr. Seuss centers around a boy who searches for a way to win the affection of the girl of his dreams. He comes across the story of the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect his world. The film’s voice talent includes Danny DeVito, Ed Helms, Taylor Swift, Zac Efron, Rob Riggle and Betty White. The movie is directed by Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul (writers of Horton Hears a Who! and Despicable Me), as well as Chris Renaud (co-director of Despicable Me). The Lorax is the third feature from Illumination Entertainment after last year’s surprise hit Despicable Me (with music by Heitor Pereira and Pharrell Williams) and the upcoming Hop (scored by Christopher Lennertz). Powell has previously scored Blue Sky Studios’ Horton Hears a Who!, which was produced by Illumination founder Chris Meledandri and was also based on a Dr. Seuss book. Read the rest of this entry »

Theodore Shapiro to Score ‘The Pirates! Band of Misfits’

Film Music Reporter has learned that composer Theodore Shapiro will make his animation scoring debut on the upcoming film The Pirates! Band of Misfits. The film’s story follows the fortunes of a cheerful but hapless pirate band as they cross the seven seas in search of adventure. The Aardman Animations-produced movie is directed by Peter Lord who is best known for his collaborations with Nick Park on the Wallace & Gromit series and the 2000 feature film Chicken Run, which he co-directed alongside Park. More recently, he also produced the Aardman Animations production Flushed Away and is involved in the upcoming animated film Arthur Christmas, which has Michael Giacchino attached to write the music. The Pirates! is co-directed by Jeff Newitt who previously worked as an animator on Aardman’s Chicken Run and Flushed Away. Not much is known about he project at this point, but it has been announced that The Pirates! will be created with the hand-crafted claymation/stop-motion technique that Aardman is known for and that the movie will be released in 3D. Three new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

The sci-fi comedy Paul is directed Greg Mottola and stars Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Sigourney Weaver, Kristen Wiig, Jane Lynch, Jason Bateman, Bill Hader and Seth Rogen as the voice of Paul. The film’s original score is composed by David Arnold. A soundtrack release including Arnold’s score, as well as several songs from the movie has already been released in Europe as reported here. The album is scheduled to come out on April 4, 2011 in the US.

Also opening today is Brad Furman’s legal thriller starring Matthew McConaughey, Marisa Tomei, John Leguizamo, Ryan Phillippe and William H. Macy. Lakeshore Records has released two different soundtracks including Cliff Martinez’ original score, as well as a song album. Visit our previous article for details on both albums. ‘The Music Never Stopped’ Soundtrack released

Rhino Media has released a soundtrack album for the drama The Music Never Stopped. The album includes one track from Paul Cantelon’s original score, as well as several songs from Grateful Dead, including three previously unreleased live recordings. Other artists featured on the soundtrack are Peggy Lee, Bob Dylan, Steppenwolf, Donovan,The Tulips and Crosby, Stills & Nash. The soundtrack is currently available digitally on Amazon and iTunes and will be released on CD on March 29, 2011. The Music Never Stopped stars J.K. Simmons, Lou Taylor Pucci, Julia Ormond, Tammy Blanchard and Mia Maestro and marks the feature directorial debut for Jim Kohlberg. Roadside Attractions is opening the movie today in limited release. Howard Shore to Score ‘Cosmopolis’

C7nema recently reported that Howard Shore is attached to reunite with his long term collaborator David Cronenberg to write the score for the upcoming drama Cosmopolis. The film based on the Don DeLillo tome is adapted for the screen by Cronenberg and follows a multimillionaire who risks his entire fortune to bet against the yen on a cataclysmic day. The movie stars Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche and Paul Giamatti. Cronenberg and Shore have previously collaborated numerous times, most recently on A History of Violence and Eastern Promises. Edward Shearmur Slated to Score John Singleton’s ‘Abduction’

Film Music Reporter has learned that composer Edward Shearmur has been tapped to score the upcoming thriller Abduction. The film centers on a young man who discovers his own baby picture on a missing persons website and sets out to uncover the truth about his life. The movie is directed by John Singleton who has been using composer David Arnold on his previous four feature films (Shaft, Baby Boy, 2 Fast 2 Furious and Four Brothers) and has also worked with John Williams on the 1997 film Rosewood. Abduction stars Taylor Lautner in his first leading man role, as well as Lily Colins, Alfred Molina, Jason Isaacs, Maria Bello and Sigourney Weaver. Read the rest of this entry »

Paul Grabowsky and Branford Marsalis Collaborating on ‘The Eye of the Storm’

Paul Grabowsky recently recorded his score for the upcoming drama The Eye of the Storm. The film is set in a Sydney suburb, where two nurses, a housekeeper and a solicitor attend to Elizabeth Hunter as her expatriate son and daughter convene at her deathbed. The movie stars Charlotte Rampling, Geoffrey Rush, Dustin Clare, Judy Davis and is directed by Fred Schepisi. The director worked with Grabowsky on his last three projects Last Orders, It Runs in the Family and Empire Falls and is best known in the film music community for his collaborations with Jerry Goldsmith on such movies as The Russia House, Mr. Baseball, I.Q. and Fierce Creatures. Elia Cmiral is currently scoring the thriller Rites of Passage. The film marks the feature directorial debut of screenwriter W. Peter Iliff (Point Break, Patriot Games, Varsity Blues) and stars Christian Slater, Wes Bentley, Kate Maberley, Ryan Donowho and Stephen Dorff. The movie centers around an anthropology bookworm who laments his place in a society that lacks a ceremony to mark his transition into manhood and leads his hard-partying, stressed-out classmates to his family’s abandoned ranch — where his brother lives in a psychotic world of drugs, guilt and Chumash Indian rituals. Ilan Eshkeri Scoring ‘Retreat’

Ilan Eshkeri has recently recorded his score for the British thriller Retreat. The film is directed by Carl Tibbetts and stars Jamie Bell, Cillian Murphy and Thandie Newton. The movie centers on a married couple who rent a cottage on a remote island to fix their marriage. Their plans are cut short when a soldier wearing a biohazard suit washes up on the beach claiming that everyone on the mainland has been killed by a virus. Eshkeri’s score features violin solos by Jack Liebeck who recently performed on Dario Marianelli’s score for Jane Eyre.
