Film Music Reporter has learned that composer Theodore Shapiro is currently writing the score for the upcoming comedy Arthur. The movie directed by Jason Winer (Modern Family) is a remake of the 1981 film with the same title starring Dudley Moore and Liza Minnelli, which won Oscars for Moore and best screenplay. The original movie was scored by Burt Bacharach, who was Academy Award-nominated for his song “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)”. The remake stars Russell Brand, Helen Mirren, Greta Gerwig, Jennifer Garner and Nick Nolte. Arthur centers around drunken playboy who stands to lose a wealthy inheritance when he falls for a woman his family doesn’t like. Warner Bros will release the movie on April 8, 2011. Remastered ‘Solaris’ soundtrack announced

La-La-Land Records will release a new and remastered version of Cliff Martinez’ score for Steven Soderbergh’s Solaris. The previous album for the 2002 sci-film starring George Clooney and produced by James Cameron has been out-of-print for a while. The new album will be released on January 18. Asche & Spencer have been hired to score the upcoming action biopic Machine Gun Preacher. The movie tells the story of Sam Childers, a former drug-dealing biker tough guy who found God and became a crusader for hundreds of Sudanese children who’ve been forced to become soldiers. The movie starring Gerard Butler, Michelle Monaghan and Michael Shannon is directed by Marc Forster (Finding Neverland, The Kite Runner, Quantum of Solace). Machine Gun Preacher marks the third collaboration between the composers and the director, who previously worked together on Monster’s Ball and Stay. Lionsgate is planning a release this September.

Jon Brion has been chosen as the composer for the upcoming indie drama The Future. The movie is written and directed by Miranda July and also features her in the film’s leading role. The film co-stars Hamish Linklater and David Warshofsky. July previously wrote and directed 2005’s indie hit Me and You and Everyone We Know, which featured a score by Michael Andrews. The Future centers around a couple that decides to adopt a stray cat which changes their perspective on life changes radically, literally altering the course of time and space and testing their faith in each other and themselves. The movie will premiere at this year’s Sundance film festival. No domestic distribution deal or release date has been announced yet.

Wanderlust centers around an urban couple branching out to live a more counter-culture lifestyle. Christophe Beck has been hired to score the upcoming comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love. The film stars Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone and Marisa Tomei. In the movie, a father’s life unravels while he deals with a marital crisis and tries to manage his relationship with his children. Crazy, Stupid, Love is directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, whose dark comedy I Love You Phillip Morris starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor with music by Nick Urata opened earlier this month. Warner Bros recently pushed the movie from the original April release date to July 29, 2011, citing positive early test screening reactions for the move to the summer.
William Ross to score ‘Seven Days in Utopia’

According to the Gorfaine/Schwartz agency, William Ross is attached to score the upcoming sports drama Seven Days in Utopia. The movie stars Robert Duvall, Melissa Leo and Lucas Black. The film marks the directorial debut of Matt Russell who previously has worked as a visual effects coordinator on such movies as Live Free and Die Hard and A Night at the Museum. According to the film’s official blog, Seven Days in Utopia follows the story of Luke Chisolm, a talented young golfer set on making the pro tour. William Ross is no stranger to sports movies, having scored such titles as Tin Cup or The Game of Their Lives. While no new movies open wide this weekend, four movies are receiving a limited release to qualify for Acadmy Awards consideration. All movies are expected to expand over the next couple of weeks.

Oscar-eligible scores announced

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences’ music branch has sent out a list of all 77 Oscar-eligible scores for 2011’s Academy Awards ceremony. As previously reported, a number of scores has been ruled ineligible (Black Swan, The Fighter, True Grit, The Kids Are All Right) by the music branch and Randy Newman hasn’t submitted his score for Toy Story 3. The list also doesn’t include Alan Menken’s score for Tangled, which apparently also hasn’t been submitted, while a song from the movie written by Alan Menken is among the frontrunners for getting a song nomination. As Variety notes, James Newton Howard has four scores in contention (The Last Airbender, Love and Other Drugs, Salt, The Tourist), while Alexandre Desplat (The King’s Speech, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow: Part 1, The Ghost Writer) and David Arnold (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Made in Dagenham, Morning Glory) have three scores each on the list.
