The composer talks about working with director Rob Marshall and his collaboration with Rodrigo y Gabriela on the music for the fourth installment in the Pirates series. Brian Byrne is scoring the upcoming drama Albert Nobbs. The movie stars Glenn Close as a woman who must pass as a man to survive life in 19th century Ireland. Close also co-wrote the script based on a short story by Irish author George Moore and makes her feature producing debut on the project. Mia Wasikowska, Aaron Johnson, Janet McTeer, Brendan Gleeson and Jonathan Rhys Meyers are co-starring. ‘Make Believe’ Soundtrack released

MuMo Record has released a soundtrack album for the documentary Make Believe. The album includes the original score by Lucas Vidal, as well as a couple of tracks by Serialmusique. For audio clips and to download the soundtrack, visit iTunes. Make Believe follows six of the world’s best young magicians as they battle for the title of Teen World Champion. The documentary is directed by J. Clay Tweel and is executive produced by Seth Gordon & Ed Cunningham (The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters). The film won the Best Documentary Award at last year’s Los Angeles Film Festival and is set to be released in theaters on May 13, 2011 in New York and two weeks later in Los Angeles. Max Richter Scoring ‘The Congress’

Max Richter has recently been working on the score for the sci-fi movie The Congress. The project reunites Richter with director Ari Folman who previously collaborated with the composer on the Academy Award-nominated animated documentary Waltz with Bashir. The film is an adaptation of the novella The Congress from sci-fi writer Stanislaw Lem (Solaris) and will be half live action and half 2D animation. Robin Wright stars as a struggling actress who is offered one last job by a major studio. They want to scan her body, own her image and likeness and use it anyway they want, with the catch being that she will never be able to act again. Three new movies are opening nationwide and this weekend:
The comic book adaptation Thor directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba, Ray Stevenson, Kat Dennings, Rene Russo and Stellan Skarsgaard is expected to top the weekend box office. Patrick Doyle has composed the score for the film and a soundtrack has been released on Buena Vista Records. Check out our announcement for details on the album and audio clips. Also opening wide is the comedy Jumping the Broom directed by Salim Akil and starring Angela Bassett, Paula Patton, Laz Alonso, Loretta Devine, Mike Epps and Julie Bowen. Edward Shearmur composed the film’s score and a soundtrack with both score and songs from the film has been released earlier this week by Madison Gate Records. Theodore Shapiro to Score Jay Roach’s ‘Game Change’

Theodore Shapiro is writing the music for the upcoming HBO drama Game Change. The movie is directed by Jay Roach (Austin Powers, Meet the Parents) who collaborated with Shapiro on last summer’s comedy Dinner for Schmucks. The film is based on the book by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin and centers Senator John McCain’s run for president in the 2008 election. Game Change stars Ed Harris as John McCain, Julianne Moore as Sarah Palin and Woody Harrelson as McCain’s senior campaign strategist and adviser, Steve Schmidt. Peter MacNicol and Ron Livingston are co-starring. The project is written by Danny Strong (Recount) and produced by Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman. Shapiro has previously worked with HBO on 2007’s HBO Voyeur Project, a theatrical multimedia experience and marketing campaign for the cable network. Read the rest of this entry »

While X-Men: First Class is still awaiting an official soundtrack release announcement, the album has appeared on several European online stores over the last couple of days. Sony Classical has been identified as the label and the soundtrack looks to be released on June 6, 2011 in the UK. Another update will be made when the domestic release date and more details about the album’s contents become available. Given the choice to release the soundtrack on Sony’s Classical label, it is safe to say that the album will most likely include Henry Jackman‘s original score. As has been reported by various websites, Take That‘s song Love Love has been chosen as the end credits song for the film and could also be featured on the soundtrack. Read the rest of this entry »
Nathaniel Mechaly Scoring ‘Colombiana’

The first trailer of the upcoming action thriller Colombiana premiered today and confirms the involvement of composer Nathaniel Mechaly. The film is directed by Olivier Megaton (Transporter 3) and co-written by Robert Mark Kamen (The Fifth Element, Taken, The Karate Kid) and Luc Besson, who also serves as one of the project’s producers. The movie’s cast is toplined by Zoe Saldana and Jordi Molla, Lennie James, Michael Vartan and Cliff Curtis are co-starring. BT Tapped to Score ‘Step Up 4’

BT has been tapped to score the upcoming dance movie Step Up 4. The sequel will be set in the backdrop of Miami. As announced this week, music video/commercials director Scott Speer will be helming the film and Jon Chu who directed the last two installments in the series (and is attached to direct the upcoming G.I. Joe sequel) will be executive producing. Chu and Steer previously worked together on the TV show The LXD: The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers. The film’s script is being written by Jenny Mayer and Adam Shankman (Hairspray, the upcoming Rock of Ages) is among the movie’s producers. Brian Tyler to Score ‘The Expendables 2’

Gordon and the Whale recently visited Brian Tyler at his studio and interviewed the composer about his work on Fast Five, currently playing in theaters. Tyler also talks about his work process, how his career developed over the last decade and some of his frequent collaborators including Justin Lin, Jonathan Liebesman and Sylvester Stallone. Check out the full video interview after the jump. During the interview, the composer confirms his involvement in the upcoming The Expendables 2, the sequel to last summer’s action hit. The project is still in pre-production and current reports indicate that Stallone won’t return to direct and only will be acting in the film.
