Varese Sarabande Records has announced a soundtrack release for the upcoming sci-fi mystery film Super 8. The album includes Michael Giacchino‘s original score from the J.J. Abrams-directed movie. The soundtrack will be released on June 28, 2011. The album is now available to pre-order on Amazon. More details on the soundtrack will posted in the next couple of weeks as they’re announced. Super 8 is produced by Steven Spielberg and stars Elle Fanning, Amanda Michalka, Ron Eldard, Kyle Chandler and Noah Emmerich. The film takes place in the summer of 1979 and revolves around a group of friends who begin noticing strange happenings going around in their small town and begin to investigate into the creepy phenomenon. Two new movies are opening wide this weekend:

The 3D horror thriller Priest directed by Scott Charles Stewart and starring Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q, Karl Urban, Lily Collins and Christopher Plummer is opening in almost 3000 theaters. Christopher Young has composed the music for the film. A soundtrack album has been released by Madison Gate Records this past Tuesday. Check out our soundtrack announcement for more information.

Also opening nationwide is the comedy Bridesmaids directed by Paul Feig, produced by Judd Apatow and starring Kirsten Wiig, Rose Byrne, Maya Rudolph and Jon Hamm. The film’s score is written by Michael Andrews. A soundtrack album, featuring twelve songs from the film, as well as one score track by Andrews has been released by Relativity Music. Varese Sarabande Records has announced the details of the soundtrack release for the Showtime show The Borgias. The album includes 38 tracks of Trevor Morris‘ original score, including the show’s main titles. Jeff Russo has recently scored the pilot for the upcoming TV reboot of Charlie’s Angels. Minka Kelly (Friday Night Lights), Rachael Taylor (Grey’s Anatomy) and Annie Ilonzeh (Melrose Place) are starring as the new Angels and it has been reported that Robert Wagner providing the voice of Charlie in the show. Ramon Rodriguez has been cast as John Bosley. The reboot is set in Miami, where the three main characters work as private investigators, getting instructions from their boss Charlie, who only communicates through a speaker box. The pilot is written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (Smallville). Marcos Siega (The Vampire Diaries) directed the pilot. Drew Barrymore, Leonard Goldberg and Nancy Jovoven, who were all involved in the two Charlie’s Angels feature adaptations are producing the project. Read the rest of this entry »

NBC has picked up the musical comedy Smash, produced by Steven Spielberg and with music by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. As reported, the show follows characters who come together for the exhilarating ride of putting on a Broadway musical. Michael Meyer directed the pilot and is expected to be back to direct more episodes. The show’s cast includes Debra Messing (Will & Grace), Anjelica Huston, Jack Davenport (Pirates of the Caribbean), Katherine McPhee (American Idol), Christian Borle, Megan Hilty and Brian d’Arcy James. Theresa Rebeck wrote the pilot and is also executive producing alongside Spielberg, Shaiman and Wittman. According to the New York Times, the fictional musical on the show will be about Marilyn Monroe, and the series itself will focus on the musical’s creation. The composer duo of tomandandy has recently scored the pilot for the ABC show Identity. The project centers on an elite police unit formed to combat the explosion of identity-related crime. The pilot stars Wentworth Miller (Prison Break), Angela Bassett (Malcolm X, ER), Tony Curran (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) and Orlando Jones (The Time Machine). The project is based on the BBC TV show created by Ed Whitmore with the same title. Writer and producer John Glenn (Eagle Eye, The Lazarus Project) is adapting the show for American television. Mark Gordon (Criminal Minds, Grey’s Anatomy) is executive producing through his production company. The pilot is directed by Gary Fleder, known for his feature film work including Kiss the Girls, Runaway Jury and Don’t Say a Word. Read the rest of this entry »

James Horner is currently recording his score for the historical epic Cristiada at Abbey Road Studios in London. The music is being recorded with a 100-piece orchestra and the recording sessions are scheduled for this and next week. Check out the film’s official Facebook page for tons of pictures and daily updates from the sessions. Clara Sanabras has been identified as the vocalist on the score. Another soloist and musician, Tony Hinnigan, who has worked with Horner on numerous films, including Braveheart and Titanic, has also been spotted in the pictures. Cristiada directed by Dean Wright chronicles the Cristeros War (1926-1929), which was touched off by a rebellion against the Mexican government’s attempt to secularize the country. Screen Daily (via The Playlist) reports that David Holmes is set to write the music for the upcoming movie Good Vibrations. Holmes is also on the producing team of the film, which tells the story of Terri Hooley, Belfast’s godfather of punk. The project marks the composer’s feature producing debut. Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D’Sa, the duo behind 2009’s Cherrybomb is directing the project. Richard Dormer, Michael Fassbender, Steve Coogan, Robert Sheehan and Bronagh Gallagher are set to star in the picture. A press release from Disney has announced the contents of the upcoming soundtrack release of Pixar’s Cars 2. Apart from 21 tracks of Michael Giacchino‘s original score, the album also includes a song written by the composer and performed by French singer/songwriter Bénabar. The song is called Mon coeur fait vroum (My Heart Goes Vroom) and is providing a musical introduction to Paris in the animation sequel. Also included on the soundtrack is the American alternative rock band Weezer, performing their own take of the 1984 pop hit You Might Think. Country superstar Brad Paisley, who was a major contributor to the first Cars soundtrack, returns with two new songs, including the duet Collisions of World, performed by Paisley and singer/songwriter Robbie Williams. Finally, the hit single Polyrhythm by the Japanese girl band Perfume is also featured on the release. The soundtrack will be released on June 14. To pre-order the album, visit Amazon. Aaron Zigman is scoring the pilot for the drama A Mann’s World. The project is written, produced and directed by Michael Patrick King who has worked with the composer on both Sex and the City movies. The show follows the complicated life of Allan Mann, a celebrity hair stylist in glamorous Los Angeles as he navigates the complexities of his business, his family life, and his goal to stay young and relevant in a place where looks are everything. The pilot stars Don Johnson, Ellen Barkin, Kelly Hu, Sandra Vergara, Caitlin Crosby and JR Bourne. The project is Zigman’s first TV credit since he wrote the music for the 2004 Showtime show Crown Heights. Zigman joins a number of composers best known for their feature work who are scoring a TV pilot this season, including Mark Isham, Chris Bacon and Brian Reitzell. Read the rest of this entry »
